Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Several Occasions, Vol. 2 of 3 1. There is scarce any expression in holy writ, which has given more offence than this. The word perfect is what many cannot hear. The very sound of it is an abomination to them; and whosoever preaches perfection, (as the phrase is, ) that is, asserts that it is attainable in this life, runs great hazard of being accounted by them worse than a heathen man or a publican. 2. And hence, some have advised, wholly to lay aside the use of those expressions, "because they have given so great offence." But are they not found in the oracles of God? If so, by what authority can any messenger of God lay them aside, even though all men should be offended? We have not so learned Christ; neither may we thus give place to the devil. Whatsoever God hath spoken, that will we speak, whether men will hear, or whether they will forbear; knowing, that then alone can any Minister of Christ he "pure from the blood of all men," when he hath "not shunned to declare unto them all the counsel of God." 3. We may not, therefore, lay these expressions aside, seeing they are the words of God and not of man. But we may and ought to explain the meaning of them; that those who are sincere of heart may not err to the right hand or left, from the mark of the prize of their high calling. And this is the more needful to be done, because, in the verse already repeated, the Apostle speaks of himself as not perfect: "Not," saith he, "as though I were already perfect." And yet immediately after, in the fifteenth verse, he speaks of himself, yea, and many others, as perfect: "Let us," saith he, "as many as be perfect, be thus minded." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Several Occasions, Vol. 3 But although this direction relates only to our Christian brethren, (such, at least, by outward profession, ) that in the text is of a far wider extent; it unquestionably relates to all mankind. It clearly requires us, to keep at a distance, as far as is practicable, from all ungodly men. Indeed it seems, the word which we render unclean thing, 73 usotptov, might rather be rendered unclean person; probably alluding to the ceremonial law, which'forbade touching one that was legally unclean. But even here, were we to understand the expres sion literally, were we to take the words in the strictest sense, the same absurdity would follow we must needs, as the Apostle speaks, 1 go out of the world. We should not be able to abide in those callings, Which the Providence of God has assigned us. Were we not to converse at all with men of those characters, it would be im possible to transact our temporal business. So that every conscien tious Christian would have nothing to do but to flee into the desert. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Various Occasions, and Most of Them on the Principal Subjects of Genuine Christianity, Vol. 2 Spirit, so he maintains it by causing his Spirit to con tinne with us. For as the beginning, so the continuance, of sanctification depends necessarily upon his inspiration. For as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abide in the vine, and the sap of the vine abide in it; no more can we, except we abide in Christ, and the Spirit of Christ abide in us. 'if any man do not observe this, and abide not in him, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered. Hence Christ exhorts us, Abide in me, and I in you; and, for our encourage ment, adds, He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit; and every branch in me that beareth fruit, my Father purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. The sum of the matter is this: all our wisdom in spiritual things, holiness and happiness, arise from the presence of the Spirit in us. While he continues to enlighten, sanctify, and com fort us, so long we know, obey, and are happy. But if he forsake us, (which it is not his will to do, ) all our good vanishes, and we are left the same ignorant, unholy, miserable creatures we were before. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plain Sermons, Vol. 2 of 2 "While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal." There is a truth which we all know equally well, - whether we are learned or ignorant, old or young; we are all equally well assured of the truth, - that the things which we see are temporal, - only for a time, and fast passing away. And yet, though we know it so well, our heavenly Father seems, if I may so speak, to take great pains to remind us of it constantly; as if it were of very great consequence that we should be continually thinking of it, and as if we were very likely, practically, to forget it. For in every thing about us, and in ourselves, and in Scripture, the Almighty seems to be continually forcing this truth upon our minds. In every thing about us, - for what are day and night so quickly following each other, but little images of life and of death, and of resurrection after death? "There is neither speech nor language, but their voices are heard among them; one day telleth another, and one night certifieth another." And what are Spring and Autumn, Summer and Winter so quietly indeed and steadily, but so rapidly, succeeding each other? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Sermons, Vol. 2 of 2 Mr. Milner's personal ministry, were heard to say, that while they were perusing some of the Sermons contained in it, they seemed to be hearing the voice of the Author speaking to them from the pulpit. But having attended more to this point, in preparing the present Volume for the press, the Editor hopes he has now succeeded still better, and that the pecu liar cast of instruction which distinguished the Pulpit Compositions of Mr. Milner, is so well pre served ln these Sermons, as to give them an increased interest with his surviving friends and hearers. But the other object which he has had in view is of far more importance; and this was to select such Sermons for publication, as in the opinion of the Author himself, were he now alive, would be best adapted to the spiritual condition, and the exist ing circumstances of his audience. Now the Editor certainly knows, that during the latter years of Mr. Milner's life, his mind was deeply affected on account of the religious declensions and divisions which he saw taking place in the town of Hull.
