The manner, such as it is, belongs to the author, but, on the other hand, little or no attempt has been made at originality -in doctrine or thought. In the seminary it was much insisted on that every priest, ana more especially every young priest, should have continually beside him some suitable means wherewith to occupy ,his spare time. Accordingly, the study and the adaptation of that most excellent work the "Conciones Sacrce " of Cardinal Bellarmin, S.J., have been found in this instance a very pleasant and a very profitable employment. The first design was to translate the sermons verbatim, but, both on account of their extreme diffuseness and because, as originally written, they do not constitute a complete course for the year, that idea proved impracticable. From a study of the work as a whole, therefore, and out of the resulting mass of matter, a sermon for each Sunday, and for a few of the principal festivals of the year has been evolved. Some extraneous thoughts, encountered in a course of desultory reading and drawn chiefly from Fr. Segneri, S.J., and Padre Agostino da Montefeltro, have been pressed into service to supplement the Gardinal's homilies. These latter have helped the present writer so often and so much in the routine of parish work that it is most earnestly hoped they may prove of assistance to others, and that this or any similar attempt, however humble, to bring out into the light these and the many other gems of Cathol1c thought and sentiment may meet with popular approval.

Book Synopsis Latin Literatures of Medieval and Early Modern Times in Europe and Beyond by : Francesco Stella
Download or read book Latin Literatures of Medieval and Early Modern Times in Europe and Beyond written by Francesco Stella and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2024-07-15 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The textual heritage of Medieval Latin is one of the greatest reservoirs of human culture. Repertories list more than 16,000 authors from about 20 modern countries. Until now, there has been no introduction to this world in its full geographical extension. Forty contributors fill this gap by adopting a new perspective, making available to specialists (but also to the interested public) new materials and insights. The project presents an overview of Medieval (and post-medieval) Latin Literatures as a global phenomenon including both Europe and extra-European regions. It serves as an introduction to medieval Latin's complex and multi-layered culture, whose attraction has been underestimated until now. Traditional overviews mostly flatten specificities, yet in many countries medieval Latin literature is still studied with reference to the local history. Thus the first section presents 20 regional surveys, including chapters on authors and works of Latin Literature in Eastern, Central and Northern Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas. Subsequent chapters highlight shared patterns of circulation, adaptation, and exchange, and underline the appeal of medieval intermediality, as evidenced in manuscripts, maps, scientific treatises and iconotexts, and its performativity in narrations, theatre, sermons and music. The last section deals with literary “interfaces,” that is motifs or characters that exemplify the double-sided or the long-term transformations of medieval Latin mythologemes in vernacular culture, both early modern and modern, such as the legends about King Arthur, Faust, and Hamlet.

Book excerpt: Essays investigating the writings attributed to Columbanus, influential 0c founder of Luxeuil and Bobbio. Columbanus (d.615), the Irish monk and founder of such important centres as Luxeuil and Bobbio, was one of the most influential figures in early medieval Europe. His fiery personality led him into conflict with Gallic bishops andRoman popes, and he defended his position on such matters as monastic discipline in a substantial corpus of Latin writings marked by burning conviction and rhetorical skill. However, the polish of his style has raised questions about the nature of his early training in Ireland and even about the authenticity of the writings which have come down to us under his name. The studies in this volume attempt to address these questions: by treating each of the individual writings comprehensively, and drawing on recently-developed techniques of stylistic analysis new light is shed on Columbanus and his early education in Ireland. More importantly, doubts over the authenticity of certain writings attributed to Columbanus are here authoritatively resolved, so putting the study of this cardinal figure on a sound basis.Professor MICHAEL LAPIDGE teaches in the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic, Universityof Cambridge.
