Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons for the Christian Year The following Sermons, with one exception 3, were preached by the revered Author to his village flock at Hursley, and that mostly between the years 1840 and 1855, when he began to preach extempore. After that time, or at least 1856, there are, I am informed, very few finished sermons. Up to that time, they are as a rule perfectly finished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church of the Living God: And Other Sermons But while we thus accept its truth, let us proceed to examine some of its constituents as presented in the passage under consideration. The first thing that calls for our attention is the commendation of humility. You will observe, however, that humility is not set forth here as the sole condition of the heavenly estate. It is a condition an indispensable condition; but there is nothing in the Saviour's words limiting the entire range of Christian character to this one quality. We are to humble ourselves as little children; we are to come to that spirit and condition which childhood symbolizes; but having humbled ourselves into that condition, there is more than one quality of true heavenly greatness. And yet, my hearers, if we take this genuine spiritual greatness as the end of our being, how true it is that, in one phase or another, humility and we may say humility alone - does lie at its base, and is its secret fountain. That we may arrive at the conviction of this truth, let us for a few moments con sider what humility is not. In the first place, humility is not a weak and timid quality. It must be carefully distinguished from a groveling spirit. There is such a thing as an honest pride and self respect. We should think something of our humanity, and not cast it under men's feet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons in Summer: Delivered in Christ Church, Cooperstown There sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, being fallen into a deep sleep; and as Paul was long preaching, he sunk down with sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead. - Acts xx, 9. Here is given a brief but vivid glimpse of a service of the primitive Church. Little of the pomp and ceremony of later ecclesiastical life appears. It is not amid the dim aisles of some imposing cathedral that the Christians of Troas gather to celebrate the Sacred Mysteries and to hear the word of God from the lips of S. Paul, greatest of missionary apostles. The hoary ruins of the city of Troas show how much its architectural magnificence was built upon other than Christian foundations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fresh Views of Old Truths: Church Sermons T is undeniable that there is often a wearisome sameness about Sermons which has afforded sad occasion for the contempt only too readily expressed for them by an irreligious world. The Author hopes and believes that he has at the least avoided this fault. The repelling element of constantly recurring religious common-places, and the stock phrases which are meant to cover, but never really conceal from the intelligent, poverty or confusion of thought, will not be found in these Sermons. Very early in the days of the world they became a just cause of complaint. Even by the godly Job they were found intolerable: and he signified his impatience of them in the plainest language. How forcible (says be) are right words. But what doth your arguing reprove? I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are ye all! Shall vain words have an end? I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul's stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake mine head at you. But I would strengthen you with my mouth. The conventional terms too, so appropriate to systematic theology, are but very sparingly introduced; the Author considering them out of place in Parochial Sermons, as inconsistent with the simplicity of the Gospel, and irrelevant to the plain teachings that the Preacher should be setting himself to gather in a practical form from the passage before him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Church Sermons Our desire as Publishers of "Church Sermons" has been to gratify a wish felt by very many persons, for a Serial in which Sermons in danger of being lost to the world might be preserved. Thousands of the noblest Sermons have been thus lost, either because they were preached extempore, and only remembered imperfectly, even by the Preachers themselves, or, when elaborately prepared were never published, owing to the pressure of other duties which precluded the bestowal of the necessary time and labour. To guard against a loss so much to be deprecated, we have originated the Serial of which this is the First Volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from God Our Contemporary: Sermons for the Times All the sermons in the present volume have been in my mind and heart during the past two years and they were preached during the course of my regular ministry at Westminster Congregational Church. I think it Will be found that they centre in the controlling conviction that it is only in the fuller reception of God's grace, and in the more mature understanding of His Will, that we can find a sufficiency of resource to meet all the pressing perplexities of the Soul and all the Wider problems Which attach to the reconstruction of human society. God is the dwelling-place of every generation; and our generation Will find in Him the light for all requisite vision and the strength for all our appointed tasks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Churches: A Course of Epiphany Sermons It cannot, I think, be foreign to the spirit of this season, that we should ask ourselves the question: After what manner has Christ been manifested to men during the more than eighteen centuries that have gone by since His ascension into heaven? The answer is, of course: Not now by such mir acles as were wrought during His life on earth, for these seem to have ceased with the Apostolic age, but through the agencies oper ated by His holy Church. The Church of Christ, then, and her manifestations of her Lord and Saviour, will furnish us with topics eminently befitting this season of the Chris tian year. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concerning the Church: Course of Sermons I am induced to publish these Sermons in the hope that some of my brother clergy may think them not unsuited for reading in their Churches or for lending or recommending to their parishioners. To one who believes, as I do most firmly, that the Church is God's own society, His chosen instrument and organization for the regeneration of mankind through Christ, and the ordinary channel of His gifts of grace, few things are more distressing than the ignorance, and, I may add, indifference of so many Churchmen as to what this same Church, of which they are members, is; as to its raison d'etre, its principles and constitution and claims on their allegiance. As far as my experience extends, not one Churchman in a thousand can give a valid reason, as distinguished from mere preferences, for his Churchmanship, or even say, often as he professes his faith in it, what he "believes" about "the Holy Catholic Church." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament, Vol. 1 The Sermons of S. Augustine, besides their other excellencies, furnish a beautiful picture of perhaps the deepest and most powerful mind of the Western Church adapting itself to the little ones of Christ. In them, he who has furnished the mould for all the most thoughtful minds for fourteen hundred years, is seen forming with loving tenderness the babes in Christ. Very touching is the child-like simplicity, with which he gradually leads them through what to them were difficulties, watching all the while whether he made himself clear to them, keeping up their attention, pleased at their understanding, dreading their approbation, and leading them off from himself to some practical result. Very touching the tenderness with which he at times reproves, the allowance which he makes for human infirmities and for those in secular life, if they will not make their infirmities their boast, or in allowed duties and indulgences forget God. But his very simplicity precludes the necessity of any preface. His Sermons explain themselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Highway of Life: And Other Sermons Tion in pamphlet form of occasional sermons preached by the pastor of the church, Hugh Thomson Kerr, D.D. These sermons have been so heartily welcomed, both by the congregation and by the community, that the Committee on Men's Work is glad to have some of them pub lished in permanent form. They have been preached during what history is likely to pro nounce the most important years in the life of our nation, and local references and historical suggestions are allowed to stand as when first printed. Events move rapidly, and already new and important changes have taken place, but the religious message here contained abides forever. William M. Furey, Chairman of Committee on M en's W ark. There is that delusion which is expressed in an outward reformation without any turning of the mind; and that which is expressed in inward agitation Of the mind without turning.
