Book excerpt: The Gadfly Papers is a collection of three essays written by Rev. Dr. Todd F. Eklof about the negative impacts the emerging culture of Political Correctness, Safetyism, and Identitarianism is having on America's most liberal religion. It's written specifically for Unitarian Universalists who care about the future of their faith, but will prove of interest to anyone seeking to understand how today's identity politics can fundamentally alter any institution, and presents a seminal case-study for researchers of this timely subject. The Gadfly Papers is a substantive, well argued work that's based on plenty of credible scholarship, yet is written in a conversational tone that makes its complex subject matter easy to understand. Whether you're a Unitarian Universalist, a student of history, social science, politics, or simply value the rare but refreshing application of logic, The Gadfly Papers is a book you won't put down until it's finished.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermon, Addresses and Essays: Delivered at the Celebration of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Foundation of the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia The valuable essays and addresses contained in this volume were delivered at the meetings held in the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia, May twelfth and thirteenth, 1896, in celebration of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the organization of our Society. It is deeply to be regretted that the list is not quite complete; for there is wanting one of the most remarkable and instructive of the essays, that of Rev. Merle St. Croix Wright on "The Development of Philosophy During the Century." This was given without notes, and the stenographic report proving imperfect, owing to the difficult nature of the subject, it was impossible for the author to reproduce what he had spoken without greater labor than it seemed just to ask him to undertake. And not even the art preservative of all arts is sufficient to embalm for us, in these pages, the spirit and cheer of the highly interesting occasion. Held, necessarily, a calendar month in advance of the actual date, the heats of summer were avoided, and delightful weather favored our proceedings. At the four sessions our Church was filled, - on the two evenings crowded, - with attentive, serious and happy congregations. The only social feature of the celebration was the pleasant informal luncheon at a neighboring hotel, at which assembled nearly two hundred friends from abroad, with members of our own and the other Unitarian Societies of this city. Book excerpt: "The collected sermons and statements in this volume, representing only part of his output, amount to an informal seminar in history, ethics, politics, secular humanism, labor relations, national and world affairs, and, from top to bottom, just plain common sense, mostly expressed with clarity, vigor, bite, charm, and humor." -- from the Introduction by Norman Corwin What is Unitarian Universalism and how does it fit into the religious landscape of America? How does Unitarian Universalism differ from other churches? What do Unitarian Universalists stand for and how have they contributed to the betterment of the human condition? These are just some of the concerns that occupied the fertile mind of Stephen H. Fritchman (1902-1981), one of America's best known Unitarian ministers. For the Sake of Clarity commemorates the life and work of this leading figure in American liberal religion. For more than thirty years, Rev. Fritchman served as minister of the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles, where he was actively involved in public debate on many vital social issues. To honor his life and career, the Fritchman Publication Committee has compiled over forty-five of his most important sermons, addresses, and radio talks covering a wide range of topics: the church and politics, freedom of the press and freedom of speech, violence, the rights of women and minorities, international relations, marriage, old age and much more. The concluding section offers Rev. Fritchman's biographical sketches of such notables as Eugene V. Debs, Albert Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi, Thomas Jefferson, Albert Schweitzer, and George Bernard Shaw. Also included is a complete bibliography of Rev. Fritchman's addresses.
