Book Synopsis The Growth of the Brethren Movement: National and International Experiences by : Neil T. R. Dickson
Download or read book The Growth of the Brethren Movement: National and International Experiences written by Neil T. R. Dickson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-12-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this book have been contributed in honour of Dr. H.H. Rowdon, a teacher of several generations of students at the London Bible College and a historian of the Brethren movement. The book includes reflections on the historiography of the Brethren, but it is their character and growth which form the principal focus. The writers make original contributions to national, regional, or local histories and at the same time raise wider themes and issues on topics such as revivalism in New Zealand and the Orkney Islands, or paternalism and missionary endeavor in Zambia. Leading features of the Brethren are discussed through papers on several seminal figures such as Anthony Norris Groves, John Eliot Howard, and George Mÿller. Above all, the opportunities and problems represented by the worldwide growth of the movement are looked at with reference to a number of countries, among them Britain, Germany, Jamaica, and Angola, or to individual congregations in places as diverse as Birmingham, Singapore, and Tasmania. 'Over the whole world...', concludes Prof. D.W. Bebbington in his contribution, 'Brethren played a distinctive role as evangelicals of the evangelicals.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six Ilianen Manobo stories transcribed from oral performances, are presented here. The stories selected are those frequently used to transmit highly-valued Manobo cultural goals and values, including those used as parable in establishing precedent in the formal setting of custom-law cases. An introductory chapter provides background information on the native storyteller and some characteristics of her performances, and analyzes the social role of storytelling within this culture. Some analysis of stories is also offered here. The stories follow; each includes texts in both Manobo and English, with footnotes containing cultural, historical, and linguistic information. Notes at the beginning of each story provide traditional and international context. The six story titles are: "Bad Character (Girl) and Good Character (Girl)"; "Wide-Back"; "Child of a Hermit"; "The Monkey and Terigtig-Bird"; "Tulalang"; and "The Hermit." Contains 57 references. Book Synopsis What Place for Hunter-gatherers in Millennium Three? by : Thomas N. Headland
Download or read book What Place for Hunter-gatherers in Millennium Three? written by Thomas N. Headland and published by Sil International, Global Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a hard look at the traumatic cultural changes that our planet's remaining hunter-gatherer societies experienced in the twentieth century, and the precarious future that is about to engulf them in the twenty-first century. The nine authors in this volume all agree that the foraging way of life, humankind's most successful adaptation for many thousands of years, has come to a close with the end of the second millennium.Case studies are presented here looking at the past and the uncertain future for post-foraging societies in Africa and Asia, and specifically the central African Pygmies, the San Bushman, and the Agta Negritos. Interwoven with these chapters are emphases on tropical deforestation and indigenous human rights, looking at these through the framework of human ecology. As Alan Barnard states, "If the human rights of proud former foraging peoples are given the attention they deserve, then there can be a bright future for them in Millennium Three. The task is not an easy one, but this book will help greatly to focus our attention on the issues that matter."
