Book excerpt: Caprius Seaton, prince of the country of Elysium on the planet Alamptria, just wants to lead a simple life. He does not want to become an agent on the council of Confidus, who is his father, the king. But according to an ancient prophecy, Caprius and a woman named Melina Hampshire will have a son named Lantrinon who will destroy the dark lord Makoor, whose goncool and vampire forces have begun trying to kill Caprius. Though they were once lovers, Caprius and Melina separated when she was seduced and betrayed by Capriuss friend, Fenison Torington. Now, six years later, Melinas mother is being manipulated by Makoor to oppose the reunion of the two young people. When the woman dies, the way is opened for the two lovers to reunite and fulfill the prophecy. Because no evidence of the supernatural nature of his attackers remains, his father is convinced that the neighboring country of Bramonia is responsible for the numerous atrocities. While on a motorbike holiday, Caprius is attacked by teams of goncools and vampires, who capture a train on which Melina Hampshire is riding, killing everyone except her and rigging it to explode when it pulls into the depot. However, the elf wizard Grongone intervenes from afar and enables Caprius to rescue Melina and destroy the train with all the vampires and goncoolsonce again eliminating all evidence of the existence of vampires and Makoor. Despite his sons claims, King Confidus plans to attack the neighboring country in three days. Caprius experiences a series of visions that confirm that wizard Grongone has selected the Seaton family to save the planet of Alamptria from the forces of the underworld. On his own, Caprius makes his way to Serenity River, which forms the border, where he evades a huge nest of vampires. In Bramonia, Caprius meets with the soldier Brandimoir, the brother-in-law of Melinas sister, Selena, and convinces him that he wants to stop the pending war between their two countries. Convinced of Capriuss claims by a vampire that his soldiers kill, Brandimoir sends a courier with the creatures head to King Confidus as evidence. Caprius meets up with a human agent named Shelly Hathoway who accompanies him in his air shuttle to Crimson Peak, where the vampires and goncools have their base. The pair fly the shuttle into the heart of the underworld forces subterranean lair, where thousands of vampires and goncools are preparing to overwhelm the world. Allowing himself to be captured, Caprius triggers a timed explosion within the vampires stolen space capsule and escapes with Shelly, though he has been wounded. The pair escape as the GRIM lair is destroyed, but so does Samuel Trenton. Returned to Castle Elysium, Capricus recovers and is reunited with Melina. He is now a fully-fledged knight master committed to fulfilling his destiny as the father of the man who will deliver Alamptria from the dark dangers that are coming.

Book excerpt: He’s got a history of bad decisions—is he finally about to make the right one? Jesse Hargreaves can’t outrun his notorious bad boy reputation. Betrayed by a woman he trusted, he retreats to his hometown, Wirralong, to serve as his brother’s best man and rebuild his life. But change isn’t easy, and it’s even harder when Jesse has to fight his fierce attraction to the maid of honour—a woman well aware of the darkness in his past. Beautician Serenity Strachan’s flippant one-liners and vibrant hair colours are armour to protect her fragile heart. She’s always crushed on Jesse, but she’s determined to keep him and his sordid past at an arm’s length. That’s easier said than done when Jesse asks Serenity to help renovate an old property. And when they're trapped underground in a tunnel cave-in, their emotional barriers fall faster than the tunnel walls. When rescue arrives, they question their new emotional intimacy. Can Serenity trust this new Jesse with her heart? And can Jesse trust that Serenity will ignore the lure of a fortune to keep his secrets safe?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventh collection of poetry to be released by Thomas Porky McDonald, And These Thy Gifts: Poems 20072009, contains another five-book set of unique material. In Theresa, Red and Serenity, the self-styled ramble poet began an arc that would permeate throughout the entire volume. Pieces like God through the Lens of a Kaleidoscope, You Wonder Where Were At, and These Thereafters all spoke of the current world, in relation to a world that once was. Where is My Spy? and Irish Girls in Waiting cited friends McDonald had made in his two decades working in NYC Transit, and Incident on Blake Street, Inside the Crawford Grill, and Is Heaven Such a Place? touched on the ballpark. In book two, Contemplating Farewell, the collection amps up, as the impending demise of Shea Stadium and the sudden loss of a dear childhood friend take center stage. I Wonder About Yesterday and A Final Opened, Indeed honor Roy Riegel, who passed away on Opening Day of the 2008 baseball season, and The Lights of Skillman, A Ramp Overlooking Ecstasy, and In 73 all looked back at Shea, even as it still hung on for dear life. Whispering to Heaven, the third book of the set, used a trip to Los Angeles (Risin Mojo on the Diamond, The Night the 70s Returned and When Nothing Turns Up Differently), Anaheim (The Boater Battalion, A Rubys Diner Monday) and San Francisco (Where Were Without Willie, The Known at Polo Guy) to lead up to the final days of the old yard in Queens (Sittin in the Greens). In the last two books of the collection, On the Steps With You and The Wonder of the Silver Wander, the final days of Shea and the election and inauguration of Barack Obama as the first black U.S. President offer up the most evocative images. The Planes Weep Openly, And So the Fade Begins, The Sound of Hope and Another Tuesday (Steps) and The Seats that Have Come Home Again, Agee and Jones, From 16 to 44 and Whistle Stops (Wander) offer up the best of these. All in all, And These Thy Gifts: Poems 2007-2009, might well be McDonalds most reflective volume yet.

Book excerpt: The Essential Cult TV Reader is a collection of insightful essays that examine television shows that amass engaged, active fan bases by employing an imaginative approach to programming. Once defined by limited viewership, cult TV has developed its own identity, with some shows gaining large, mainstream audiences. By exploring the defining characteristics of cult TV, The Essential Cult TV Reader traces the development of this once obscure form and explains how cult TV achieved its current status as legitimate television. The essays explore a wide range of cult programs, from early shows such as Star Trek, The Avengers, Dark Shadows, and The Twilight Zone to popular contemporary shows such as Lost, Dexter, and 24, addressing the cultural context that allowed the development of the phenomenon. The contributors investigate the obligations of cult series to their fans, the relationship of camp and cult, the effects of DVD releases and the Internet, and the globalization of cult TV. The Essential Cult TV Reader answers many of the questions surrounding the form while revealing emerging debates on its future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the hot, windless July 7 of 1865, Mary E. Surratt, who had been found guilty of complicity in the assassination of President Lincoln, was hanged with three of the men who had participated in the plot. When Mrs. Surratt was hanged, almost no one doubted her guilt. It was an accepted fact that she had given aid to John Wilkes Booth. And it was generally believed that, at her Washington boardinghouse, "she kept the nest that hatched the egg." But the execution was hardly over when there were murmurs that Mrs. Surratt was not guilty. With the passing of time and the appearance of evidence that tends to discredit the testimony of the chief witnesses against her, the verdict of guilt has come increasingly under fire. Partisan writers and speakers have attempted to establish her guilt or innocence, but until publication of this volume no one had made a complete and unbiased presentation of the evidence. What, then, is the truth about Mrs. Surratt? Was she guilty or innocent? In this book, Guy W. Moore presents an objective, impartial review of the case to establish, so far as possible, the truth of Mrs. Surratt's position. Moore takes into consideration the people and the events with which Mrs. Surratt was involved in the days preceding the assassination and on that fateful day itself; he interprets the official stenographic report of the assassination trial and the diaries and papers of people concerned with the trial. From these sources, along with the reports in contemporary newspapers and periodicals, he presents evidence designed to clarify the controversy which has raged about the name of Mrs. Surratt since her death that scorching Friday afternoon in 1865.

Of course, the science is not definitive, but the answer may lie within this story..... This is a story of a millionaire in New Orleans who seems to have it all, but what you don’t know is that he has a fatal flaw; he’s attracted to the wrong women. The ones that smell like trouble from a mile away, and this one in particular had her demons on her shoulders. She wore them like a badge of honor. She has a Borderline Personality Disorder, pulling several weights of troubling history, and evil agendas. Her name is Andrea Locket, the alluring beauty who poses as a dainty maid for hire to get what and who she wants. Eliminating anyone who stands in her way. But why would a man fall for a woman with so much baggage? Why didn’t he just run the other way? I’m glad you asked because I know you are curious about the reason why. But nothing is just black and white, there is always some grey. There’s usually much more to things than we can see. That is why you must take this journey with me to where it all began. The man in is story is me, Lonnie Guy, who invites you to take a ride with me on this erotic, wild journey of how she became who she is; and why I stayed.

Book excerpt: Like Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children and Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, Moses Isegawa's Abyssinian Chronicles tells a riveting story of twentieth-century Africa that is passionate in vision and breathtaking in scope. At the center of this unforgettable tale is Mugezi, a young man who manages to make it through the hellish reign of Idi Amin and experiences firsthand the most crushing aspects of Ugandan society: he withstands his distant father's oppression and his mother's cruelty in the name of Catholic zeal, endures the ravages of war, rape, poverty, and AIDS, and yet he is able to keep a hopeful and even occasionally amusing outlook on life. Mugezi's hard-won observations form a cri de coeur for a people shaped by untold losses.

Serenity's senior year had gone from collections of memories to recollections of regret. The end could not come fast enough for her. Trevor felt life had given him a raw deal. He intended on cramming as many years' worth of life as he could in the very possible short time he had left. In 1968, Serenity Marolis, a young woman just out of high school, struggled to survive after plunging into the ferocious waters of Niagara Falls. While she was fighting for her life, she found herself in the realm between life and death and was sent on a journey through history by an angelic being. As Serenity made her way toward her eternal destination, she hoped to find her friend waiting on the other side. Sixteen-year-old Trevor Wyatt did not believe in eternity or that if there was a God, He would allow a person to suffer with the heart condition Trevor had had to live with. In 2018, Trevor met Mary O'Neil, who told of Serenity's plight. He considered the story a fictional tale designed to convert him to Christ and was not persuaded. The stories were suddenly entwined, but would it change his mind?

Book excerpt: INCIDENT AT HOWARD BEACH A CASE FOR MURDER BY CHARLES J. HYNES and Bob Drury THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION The murder that shocked a city and nation and how our justice system works at its best. Late on the night of December 19, 1986, four black men were driving through the all-white community of Howard Beach, in the New York City borough of Queens, when their car broke down. By the early hours of the next morning, one of them lay dead on the Belt Parkway and one had been beaten nearly to death with a tree limb and a baseball bat by a dozen local teenagers. In the months to come, Howard Beach became a code all over the world for the worst in racial tensions. The story behind the Howard Beach incident, its investigation and the subsequent trial is a story of hatred, brutality and deceit; of media outcry, political shuffling and public manipulation; of a cast of characters ranging from petrified politicians to outraged black activists to the quiet citizens of an insular neighborhood. But it was up to one man to bring the case to trial and steer it to its fair conclusion: Special Prosecutor Charles J. Joe Hynes. Incident at Howard Beach is his storya riveting and candid expos of his fight to discern what really happened that night, his struggle to make a coherent case out of those events, and the battles and tactics he used during the trial a year later in state supreme court. From the on-site investigation through jury selection, behind-the-scenes deal-making, and trial deliberation, here is everything that led to the convictions of the ringleaders and helped to quiet a city in turmoil. Charles J. Hynes Charles J. Hynes, the District Attorney of Brooklyn, New York, has been in public service for more than forty years. He has been chief of the Brooklyn DA's Rackets Bureau, a Special State Prosecutor investigating Medicaid Fraud, a Special State Prosecutor for Criminal Justice who prosecuted the Howard Beach case and a New York City Fire Commissioner. He has been the Brooklyn District Attorney since 1990. Bob Drury Contributing Editor and Chief Military Correspondent of Men's Health, Bob Drury has been nominated for three National Magazine Awards and a Pulitzer Prize. He is also the author, co-author, or editor of nine nonfiction books. Re-reading Hyness excellent account of this awful racial crime with 25 years of perspective once again brings the blood to rapid boil. I covered that crime. I watched Hynes fight for justice as a special prosecutor in the courtroom. I interviewed him during the trial. I believe that had it not been for his tenacious prosecution in this vile murder New York City would today be a much uglier city. Reading his new Forward and Epilogue reminds me of just how far we have come in race relations in New York since Howard Beach. History will not forget that Hynes had a helluva lot to do with that desperately needed change. For that reason alone this compelling, page-turning book deserves this second look.
