Book excerpt: The most difficult and complex thing we ever do as human beings is to find a suitable companion on our journey through life. For the very few who find their soul mate, life can offer no greater reward. But what is it that makes a relationship work or not work? A quiet, aging writer travels to the Greek Islands on a working holiday to complete his current novel in a relaxing environment. Approaching sixty, he sees himself as too old to be loved, and past the age of physical/sexual attraction. Having never found it, he’s given up on any idea or prospect of ever finding real love or the perfect partner to share his life. By sheer chance, he meets a handsome and intelligent young Spanish artist and they fall in love. For two months, the two men share a deep, genuine love, as a lasting relationship unfolds between them. Set against the idyllic backdrop of their villa overlooking the Aegean Sea on one of the most beautiful islands on earth, the story is not intended as a “gay romance,” but instead to explore relationships in general. Relationships are examined via observations and conversations between the couple, and in their private introspections and reflections. This is the story of how a chance meeting changed the writer’s life and the life of the young man he met, forever. It is the first book in a different romance trilogy.

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of Imperfection, a theory of uncertainty as the very core of the scientific method—and the essence of its wonder. How many times have we looked for something and found something else? A partner, a job, an object? The same thing often happens to scientists: they design an experiment and discover the unexpected, which usually turns out to be very important. This fascinating phenomenon is called serendipity, which takes its name from the mythical Serendip, a place from which, according to a Persian fable, three princes set off to explore the world, making chance discoveries along the way. In Serendipity, the award-winning author of Imperfection Telmo Pievani returns to weave a compelling story about the unexpected in science and its fascinating role in our understanding of the world. Going far beyond the usual examples of penicillin, X-rays, the microwave oven, and Christopher Columbus, Pievani shows that the most surprising stories of serendipity in the history of science reveal profound aspects of the logic of scientific discovery. In this book, he presents for the first time: an archaeology of the idea; a taxonomy of serendipitous discoveries; an “ecology of serendipity” (the surrounding conditions and factors that can promote it); and lastly, a theory of serendipity (why it occurs so frequently in so many sciences). From Zadig to Sherlock Holmes, Pievani shows that such great discoveries are not just the product of luck. Instead, serendipity comes from a mix of cunning, curiosity, sagacity, imagination, and accidents caught on the fly. Serendipity illuminates how much we don’t know and how much we don’t even know we don’t know. Above all, Pievani reminds us that the human brain is of a piece with the world it is investigating—a world so much bigger than our knowledge—and it has also evolved within that world, adapting as it has to.

Book excerpt: From the names of cruise lines and bookstores to an Australian ranch and a nudist camp outside of Atlanta, the word serendipity--that happy blend of wisdom and luck by which something is discovered not quite by accident--is today ubiquitous. This book traces the word's eventful history from its 1754 coinage into the twentieth century--chronicling along the way much of what we now call the natural and social sciences. The book charts where the term went, with whom it resided, and how it fared. We cross oceans and academic specialties and meet those people, both famous and now obscure, who have used and abused serendipity. We encounter a linguistic sage, walk down the illustrious halls of the Harvard Medical School, attend the (serendipitous) birth of penicillin, and meet someone who "manages serendipity" for the U.S. Navy. The story of serendipity is fascinating; that of The Travels and Adventures of Serendipity, equally so. Written in the 1950s by already-eminent sociologist Robert Merton and Elinor Barber, the book--though occasionally and most tantalizingly cited--was intentionally never published. This is all the more curious because it so remarkably anticipated subsequent battles over research and funding--many of which centered on the role of serendipity in science. Finally, shortly after his ninety-first birthday, following Barber's death and preceding his own by but a little, Merton agreed to expand and publish this major work. Beautifully written, the book is permeated by the prodigious intellectual curiosity and generosity that characterized Merton's influential On the Shoulders of Giants. Absolutely entertaining as the history of a word, the book is also tremendously important to all who value the miracle of intellectual discovery. It represents Merton's lifelong protest against that rhetoric of science that defines discovery as anything other than a messy blend of inspiration, perspiration, error, and happy chance--anything other than serendipity.

Book excerpt: In the quiet solitude of a picturesque countryside, where rolling hills meet the azure sky, lies a tale of rediscovery, love, and the transformative power of art. In our story, we meet Nicole, a once-successful artist, whose heart now bears the weight of disillusionment and aching memories. Seeking solace and inspiration, she flees the bustling city life to this serene haven, hoping that the whispering winds and dancing fields will heal her broken spirit. Little did Nicole know that fate had something extraordinary in store for her. Amidst the tranquil landscape, she stumbles upon an enigmatic art restorer named Dariel, living a secluded life shrouded in mystery. Drawn together by a shared passion for art, they form an unlikely alliance, embarking on a journey that will not only revive a forgotten masterpiece but also transform their lives in ways they could never have imagined. As they collaborate on restoring the ancient painting, Nicole and Dariel unravel layers of emotions, not only within the artwork but also within themselves. Through their artistic endeavors, they find a conduit to express their deepest fears, regrets, and desires. In the midst of their vulnerable exchange, an unexpected bond blossoms between them, born from the power of understanding and shared healing. Amidst the breathtaking beauty of the countryside, the curious gaze of the locals, and the serendipitous encounters that mark their path, Nicole and Dariel navigate the complexities of love, forgiveness, and letting go of the past. With every stroke of the brush and each carefully chosen color, they learn that the act of creation can be a form of catharsis, a way to mend the cracks in their souls and reignite the spark of inspiration. As the forgotten masterpiece is unveiled, it reveals not only its hidden secrets but also the innermost struggles of our protagonists. The painting becomes a metaphor for their journey, a reflection of their own transformation and the profound impact of their collaboration on each other's lives. In 'The Art of Serendipity,' we invite you to join Nicole and Dariel on their artistic odyssey, where the lines between restoration and redemption blur, and the canvas of their lives becomes a testament to the power of love and art. In this tale of two souls finding solace, we will witness how the beauty of the countryside and the transformative magic of creativity combine to create a masterpiece of serendipity.

Book excerpt: Some people may think romance is dead. It isnt; it has just changed, along with the society we inhabit. Though this story would be viewed as a gay romance, that is not my main motivation in writing this book. It is intended to explore relationships in general. All relationships are different and unique. What is it that makes them work or not work? Synergy explores relationships through observations and comments via the many conversations and personal introspections and reflections of the two main characters. The two central characters are an aging, very private, and semi-introverted Australian writer and a handsome young Spanish artist. Their personal histories, environments, family influences, and important life experiences are explored and discussed. What shaped these two people into who they now are? Why does their unlikely relationship seem to work so well? When by all reasonable logic, it most probably shouldnt. This is the second volume in a trilogy. It continues on from the first published volume, Serendipity, where they meet on the Greek Island of Skopelos and are rapidly drawn together in a surprising and unforeseen set of circumstances. Synergy follows their developing and deepening relationship as they travel extensively. First in Spain, where they marry; then to London, for an exhibition of the artists works; Australia; and finally sail from Spain back to their new villa on Skopelos. There is the occasional glitch and questioning concerning their relationship, but it ends quite positively as the two move into and set up their new villa overlooking the magnificent Aegean Sea. The continuation and evolution of their story and relationship in the third volume is alluded to in the last chapter. Each volume is written as a separate and complete story that may be read on their own or in sequence. Murray James

Book excerpt: Good luck isn’t just chance—it can be learned and leveraged—and The Serendipity Mindset explains how you can use serendipity to make life better at work, at home—everywhere. Many of us believe that the great turning points and opportunities in our lives happen by chance, that they’re out of our control. Often we think that successful people—and successful companies and organizations—are simply luckier than the rest of us. Good fortune—serendipity—just seems to happen to them. Is that true? Or are some people better at creating the conditions for coincidences to arise and taking advantage of them when they do? How can we connect the dots of seemingly random events to improve our lives? In The Serendipity Mindset, Christian Busch explains that serendipity isn’t about luck in the sense of simple randomness. It’s about seeing links that others don’t, combining these observations in unexpected and strategic ways, and learning how to detect the moments when apparently random or unconnected ideas merge to form new opportunities. Busch explores serendipity from a rational and scientific perspective and argues that there are identifiable approaches we can use to foster the conditions to let serendipity grow. Drawing from biology, chemistry, management, and information systems, and using examples of people from all walks of life, Busch illustrates how serendipity works and explains how we can train our own serendipity muscle and use it to turn the unexpected into opportunity. Once we understand serendipity, Busch says, we become curators of it, and luck becomes something that no longer just happens to us—it becomes a force that we can grasp, shape, and hone. Full of exciting ideas and strategies, The Serendipity Mindset offers a clear blueprint for how we can cultivate serendipity to increase innovation, influence, and opportunity in every aspect of our lives.
