Suominen and published by OAE Publishing Inc.. This book was released on 2019-02-28 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aim: Bisphosphonates are used as an adjuvant treatment in breast cancer bone metastasis patients, often simultaneously with chemotherapeutic agents. Interestingly, their sequential combination has been reported to have synergistic anti-tumor effects on bone metastases in preclinical models. We studied the effects of doxorubicin (DOX) and zoledronic acid (ZOL) and their combination on established bone metastases in the MDA-MB-231(SA)GFP bone metastasis model. Methods: Tumor burden and osteolytic bone lesions were quantitated by fluorescence imaging and radiography, respectively. The mice were randomized in four groups receiving vehicle, DOX, ZOL or both DOX and ZOL in a sequential combination on day 14. Serum marker of osteoclast number was followed weekly, and blood ionized calcium was measured at sacrifice. Bone and tumor area, apoptosis and proliferation of tumor cells were analyzed from histological sections. Results: ZOL prevented hypercalcemia and osteolytic lesion progression, whereas DOX induced apoptosis in the MDA-MB-231(SA)GFP cells. However, neither of the treatments alone nor in sequential combination were able to reduce tumor burden in bone. Furthermore, no additive effects on tumor cell apoptosis were observed in the combination group. Conclusion: No additive effects in combination of DOX and ZOL were observed in this aggressive model of breast cancer bone metastasis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides a comprehensive review and expertise on various interventional cancer pain procedures. The first part of the text addresses the lack of consistency seen in the literature regarding interventional treatment options for specific cancer pain syndromes. Initially, it discusses primary cancer and treatment-related cancer pain syndromes that physicians may encounter when managing cancer patients. The implementation of paradigms that can be used in treating specific groups of cancer such as breast cancer, follows. The remainder of the text delves into a more common approach to addressing interventional cancer pain medicine. After discussing interventional options that are commonly employed by physicians, the text investigates how surgeons may address some of the more severe pain syndromes, and covers the most important interventional available for our patients, intrathecal drug delivery. Chapters also cover radiologic options in targeted neurolysis and ablative techniques, specifically for bone metastasis, rehabilitation to address patients’ quality of life and function, and integrative and psychological therapies. Essentials of Interventional Cancer Pain Management globally assesses and addresses patients’ needs throughout the cancer journey. Written by experts in the field, and packed with copious tables, figures, and flow charts, this book is a must-have for pain physicians, residents, and fellows.

A brief overview of epidemiology and risk factors is followed by a sequence of specific presentations organized by tumors stage or disease classification. Each discussion features a case presentation that mimics the format of a tumor board presentation and thus illustrates key diagnostic and management decisions. There is also a discussion of the evidence that supports the clinical management decisions taken in the case, based on current expert panel guidelines. Algorithms and decision tree graphics are used extensively to provide visual support of the decision process. The combination of case presentations and evidence-based management discussions make this volume a unique tool for keeping current with clinical guidelines and provides the reader with a clear understanding of applications of new information for use in daily practice.

Book excerpt: During the past decades, with the introduction of the recombinant DNA, hybridoma and transgenic technologies there has been an exponential evolution in understanding the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of a large number of human diseases. The technologies are evident with the development of cytokines and monoclonal antibodies as therapeutic agents and the techniques used in gene therapy. Immunopharmacology is that area of biomedical sciences where immunology, pharmacology and pathology overlap. It concerns the pharmacological approach to the immune response in physiological as well as pathological events. This goals and objectives of this textbook are to emphasize the developments in immunology and pharmacology as they relate to the modulation of immune response. The information includes the pharmacology of cytokines, monoclonal antibodies, mechanism of action of immune-suppressive agents and their relevance in tissue transplantation, therapeutic strategies for the treatment of AIDS and the techniques employed in gene therapy. The book is intended for health care professional students and graduate students in pharmacology and immunology.

This has led to remarkable progress in both diagnosis and therapy, including in particular the approval of novel and first-in-class drugs such as thalidomide, bortezomib, and lenalidomide. This book, written by internationally acknowledged experts, covers a wide range of topics relating to multiple myeloma, including history, epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical features, staging, and prognostic systems. The principal focus, however, is on therapy, with detailed information on the various promising treatment options which give hope that this cancer will be transformed into a chronic disease or even become curable. Individualized therapy and the variety of supportive treatment options, as described in this volume, will help in achieving this goal, as well as in reducing adverse events and improving quality of life.

After introductory chapters on the history, epidemiology, and biology of pediatric sarcomas, treatment considerations are extensively reviewed, with emphasis on the use of risk-adjusted treatment approaches. The pathology and biology of this diverse group of tumors are extensively reviewed. Promising new treatment approaches are discussed, and strategies for the development of new agents are appraised. The major common pediatric sarcomas, including osteosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma and non-rhabdomyosarcoma soft tissue sarcoma, are covered in detail. The authors are internationally recognized experts who offer a largely evidence-based consensus on etiology, biology, and treatment. This handbook has far-reaching applicability to the clinical diagnosis and management of childhood and adolescent sarcomas and will prove invaluable to specialists, generalists, and trainees alike.
