The Hamilton system methodology in analytical mechanics is used for eigenvalue problems, vibration theory, gyroscopic systems, structural mechanics, wave-guide, LQ control, Kalman filter, robust control etc. All aspects are described in the same unified methodology. Numerical methods for all these problems are provided and given in meta-language, which can be implemented easily on the computer. Precise integration methods both for initial value problems and for two-point boundary value problems are proposed, which result in the numerical solutions of computer precision. Key Features of the text include: -Unified approach based on Hamilton duality system theory and symplectic mathematics. -Gyroscopic system vibration, eigenvalue problems. -Canonical transformation applied to non-linear systems. -Pseudo-excitation method for structural random vibrations. -Precise integration of two-point boundary value problems. -Wave propagation along wave-guides, scattering. -Precise solution of Riccati differential equations. -Kalman filtering. -HINFINITY theory of control and filter.

Book excerpt: This three-week summer program considered the symmetries preserving various natural geometric structures. There are two parts to the proceedings. The articles in the first part are expository but all contain significant new material. The articles in the second part are concerned with original research. All articles were thoroughly refereed and the range of interrelated work ensures that this will be an extremely useful collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytical mechanics is the foundation of many areas of theoretical physics including quantum theory and statistical mechanics, and has wide-ranging applications in engineering and celestial mechanics. This introduction to the basic principles and methods of analytical mechanics covers Lagrangian and Hamiltonian dynamics, rigid bodies, small oscillations, canonical transformations and Hamilton–Jacobi theory. This fully up-to-date textbook includes detailed mathematical appendices and addresses a number of advanced topics, some of them of a geometric or topological character. These include Bertrand's theorem, proof that action is least, spontaneous symmetry breakdown, constrained Hamiltonian systems, non-integrability criteria, KAM theory, classical field theory, Lyapunov functions, geometric phases and Poisson manifolds. Providing worked examples, end-of-chapter problems, and discussion of ongoing research in the field, it is suitable for advanced undergraduate students and graduate students studying analytical mechanics.

Book excerpt: This book offers a systematic presentation of a variety of methods and results concerning integrable systems of classical mechanics. The investigation of integrable systems was an important line of study in the last century, but up until recently only a small number of examples with two or more degrees of freedom were known. In the last fifteen years however, remarkable progress has been made in this field via the so-called isospectral deformation method which makes extensive use of group-theoretical concepts. The book focuses mainly on the development and applications of this new method, and also gives a fairly complete survey of the older classic results. Chapter 1 contains the necessary background material and outlines the isospectral deformation method in a Lie-algebraic form. Chapter 2 gives an account of numerous previously known integrable systems. Chapter 3 deals with many-body systems of generalized Calogero-Moser type, related to root systems of simple Lie algebras. Chapter 4 is devoted to the Toda lattice and its various modifications seen from the group-theoretic point of view. Chapter 5 investigates some additional topics related to many-body systems. The book will be valuable to students as well as researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume attests to the vitality of differential geometry as it probes deeper into its internal structure and explores ever widening connections with other subjects in mathematics and physics. To most of us Professor S. S. Chern is modern differential geometry, and we, his students, are grateful to him for leading us to this fertile landscape. The aims of the symposium were to review recent developments in geometry and to expose and explore new areas of research. It was our way of honoring Professor Chern upon the occasion of his official retirement as Professor of Mathematics at the University of California. This book is a record of the scientific events of the symposium and reflects Professor Chern's wide interest and influence. The conference also reflected Professor Chern's personality. It was a serious occasion, active yet relaxed, mixed with gentleness and good humor. We wish him good health, a long life, happiness, and a continuation of his extraordinarily deep and original contributions to mathematics. I. M.
