Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Education and Social Change in Latin America is a valuable addition to the area studies literature in Comparative Education. Torres knits contributions from recognized North and South American experts to produce a comprehensive tapestry of analyses of both formal and non-formal education in Latin America. The book constitutes an excellent example of the application of a broad social science perspective to the study of education, viewed as a constituent sub-system. The foci of non-formal education (Part I), political socialisation (Part II), and the impact of social change upon education in Brazil (Part III) facilitates a broad range of comparisons. A balance between the often-contradictory perspectives-economic, anthropological, sociological and political-provides the reader with a comprehensive “snapshot” of trends and developments in Latin American education during the crucial 1980s. This inter-disciplinary examination of aspects of Latin American education has a broad range of applications, ranging from introductory courses to senior seminars to a valuable research tool. What would otherwise be an exceptional book is rendered even more valuable by Torres’ conversation with Paulo Freire. While Torres is recognized as one of the foremost authorities on Freire, this chapter explores Freire as a human being, an educator, and introduces some of the contradictions faced by a world renowned adult educator who assumed the mantle of an administrator in the formal education system in his native Brazil between 1989 and 1991.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides an important overview of corporeality, embodiment and learning in education from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. Situating the body at the centre of educational practice, the editors and contributors introduce the concept of ‘tact’ as a practical corporeal language. The chapters provide a spectrum of historical, conceptual, empirical and practical educational approaches for embodied pedagogical engagement. Tact and embodied knowledge form a significant component of a teacher’s capability and professionalism: interacting with students, a pedagogue responds to them tactfully, emotionally, sensitively, and reflectively searching for the right thing to do, the right words to say, improvising in aural, linguistic, spatial, and visual way that are as restrained as they are enabled by the body. This handbook questions the familiar and established essentialist and naturalist view of the body to allow new perspectives on how corporeality affects learners. It will be of interest to scholars in education and philosophy as well as those researching in across social sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite international congresses and international journals, anthropologies of education differ significantly around the world. Linguistic barriers constrain the flow of ideas, which results in a vast amount of research on educational anthropology that is not published in English or is difficult for international readers to find. This volume responds to the call to attend to educational research outside the United States and to break out of “metropolitan provincialism.” A guide to the anthropologies and ethnographies of learning and schooling published in German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Slavic languages, Japanese, and English as a second language, show how scholars in Latin America, Japan, and elsewhere adapt European, American, and other approaches to create new traditions. As the contributors show, educators draw on different foundational research and different theoretical discussions. Thus, this global survey raises new questions and casts a new light on what has become a too-familiar discipline in the United States.

Book excerpt: The volume collects the contributions presented at the international conference Hominis 2023 (Havana, Cuba, 24-28 April 2023), in its ninth edition, entitled “Psicologia viva al servicio de sus pueblos”. In particular, the contributions of some theorists and scholars of Vygoskian thought presented at the Symposium “The Zone of Proximal Development (ZDP) in the School Education and Clinical Practice” are collected here. Therefore, the collection edited here resulted from an enriching and constructive international meeting that saw the profitable synergy between scholars of different countries involved in research, expanding a multicultural approach to psycho-pedagogical development and learning. The edition of the present volume represents to the editor the opportunity to synthesise the state of historical-cultural psychology, mainly when applied in clinical and didactical fields. Thanks to Sapienza’s funding for international agreements, the publication of these proceedings allows for a broad, in-depth analysis, and prospective analysis of the historical-cultural approach proposed by L.S. Vygotskij, a thinker to be appreciated not simply as a semiologist but as a fighter for freedom and overall inclusion in the frame of values of social justice and equality. It is an ambitious attempt, a message to all scholars, colleagues, and students engaged in education and psycho-social interventions.
