Book excerpt: This book serves as the first guideline of the integrative approach, optimal for our new and young generations. Recent technology advancements in computer vision, IoT sensors, and analytics open the door to highly impactful innovations and applications as a result of effective and efficient integration of those. Such integration has brought to scientists and engineers a new approach —the integrative approach. This offers far more rapid development and scalable architecting when comparing to the traditional hardcore developmental approach. Featuring biomedical and healthcare challenges including COVID-19, we present a collection of carefully selective cases with significant added- values as a result of integrations, e.g., sensing with AI, analytics with different data sources, and comprehensive monitoring with many different sensors, while sustaining its readability.

Book excerpt: Crowd computing, crowdsourcing, crowd-associated network (CrAN), crowd-assisted sensing are some examples of crowd-based concepts that harness the power of people on the web or connected via web-like infrastructure to do tasks that are often difficult for individual users or computers to do alone. This creates many challenging issues like assessing reliability and correctness of crowd generated information, delivery of data and information via crowd, middleware for supporting crowdsourcing and crowd computing tasks, crowd associated networking and its security, Quality of Information (QoI) issues, etc. This book compiles the latest advances in the relevant fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade, there has been a growing interest in human behavior analysis, motivated by societal needs such as security, natural interfaces, affective computing, and assisted living. However, the accurate and non-invasive detection and recognition of human behavior remain major challenges and the focus of many research efforts. Traditionally, in order to identify human behavior, it is first necessary to continuously collect the readings of physical sensing devices (e.g., camera, GPS, and RFID), which can be worn on human bodies, attached to objects, or deployed in the environment. Afterwards, using recognition algorithms or classification models, the behavior types can be identified so as to facilitate advanced applications. Although such traditional approaches deliver satisfactory performance and are still widely used, most of them are intrusive and require specific sensing devices, raising issues such as privacy and deployment costs. In this book, we will present our latest findings on non-invasive sensing and understanding of human behavior. Specifically, this book differs from existing literature in the following senses. Firstly, we focus on approaches that are based on non-invasive sensing technologies, including both sensor-based and device-free variants. Secondly, while most existing studies examine individual behaviors, we will systematically elaborate on how to understand human behaviors of various granularities, including not only individual-level but also group-level and community-level behaviors. Lastly, we will discuss the most important scientific problems and open issues involved in human behavior analysis.

Book excerpt: nd Welcome to the proceedings of PERVASIVE 2004, the 2 International C- ference on Pervasive Computing and the premier forum for the presentation and appraisal of the most recent and most advanced research results in all - undational and applied areas of pervasive and ubiquitous computing. Consi- ring the half-life period of technologies and knowledge this community is facing, PERVASIVE is one of the most vibrant, dynamic, and evolutionary among the computer-science-related symposia and conferences. The research challenges, e?orts, and contributions in pervasive computing have experienced a breathtaking acceleration over the past couple of years, mostly due to technological progress, growth, and a shift of paradigms in c- puter science in general. As for technological advances, a vast manifold of tiny, embedded, and autonomous computing and communication systems have st- ted to create and populate a pervasive and ubiquitous computing landscape, characterized by paradigms like autonomy, context-awareness, spontaneous - teraction, seamless integration, self-organization, ad hoc networking, invisible services, smart artifacts, and everywhere interfaces. The maturing of wireless networking, miniaturized information-processing possibilities induced by novel microprocessor technologies, low-power storage systems, smart materials, and technologies for motors, controllers, sensors, and actuators envision a future computing scenario in which almost every object in our everyday environment will be equipped with embedded processors, wireless communication facilities, and embedded software to perceive, perform, and control a multitude of tasks and functions.
