Force-to-rebalance feedback control that is commonly used in MEMS accelerometers can improve the performances of accelerometers such as increasing their stability, bandwidth and dynamic range. However, the controller also increases the noise floor. There are two major sources of the noise in MEMS accelerometer. They are electronic noise from the CMOS readout circuit and thermal-mechanical Brownian noise caused by damping. Kalman filter is an effective solution to the problem of reducing the effects of the noises through estimating and canceling the states contaminated by noise. The design and implementation of a Kalman filter for a MEMS capacitive accelerometer is presented in the thesis in order to filter out the noise mentioned above while keeping its good performance under feedback control. The dynamic modeling of the MEMS accelerometer system and the controller design based on the model are elaborated in the thesis. Simulation results show the Kalman filter gives an excellent noise reduction, increases the dynamic range of the accelerometer, and reduces the displacement of the mass under a closed-loop structure.

Accelerometers are among the most widely used sensors implemented in MEMS technology. MEMS accelerometers are showing a growing presence in almost all industries ranging from automotive to medical. A traditional MEMS accelerometer employs a proof mass suspended to springs, which displaces in response to an external acceleration. A single proof mass can be used for one- or multi-axis sensing. A variety of transduction mechanisms have been used to detect the displacement. They include capacitive, piezoelectric, thermal, tunneling, and optical mechanisms. Capacitive accelerometers are widely used due to their DC measurement interface, thermal stability, reliability, and low cost. However, they are sensitive to electromagnetic field interferences and have poor performance for high-end applications (e.g., precise attitude control for the satellite). Book excerpt: Common user control interfaces are exemplified by translations of user interaction into an unnatural medium, such as joystick controllers or vehicle controls. These devices require experience to use properly, limiting user interaction and carryover to different control devices. In this work we propose a control device based on intuitive user motion interaction, where this motion is replicated on a robotic system instead of an intermediate device control. The device control consists of a common camera phone, where the motion of the user is replicated on a 2 degree-of-freedom camera mount system. To achieve this concept, we begin by building and testing the accuracy of two different types of prediction algorithm, one based on images taken by the camera phone, and one using the sensors contained in the phone itself. The accuracy of the angular rotational estimation is evaluated on two different experiments, one using slower rotation, more suited to the image-based approach, and one using a faster rotation speed, where a sensor-based approach is more suitable. The results of each experiment are then evaluated, indicating that a combined approach for prediction is suitable for a range of rotational velocities. The combined method based on the Kalman filter is developed and tested, and results presented.

A test bed was created to characterize the random noise and errors inherent to orientation sensing in the MicroStrain 3DM-GX1 IMU for static cases as well as after experiencing an impact force. Balance simulations were performed to control the center of mass location of a robot modeled as an inverted pendulum. The controlled center of mass trajectories with state estimates generated from Kalman filtering were compared, where possible, to the CM trajectory based on unfiltered sensor measurements of the states. For the simple case of inverted pendulum control, it was determined that noise and error in the IMU are sufficiently small that Kalman filtering is not necessary when all states can be measured, but results in significant improvements in the RMS error of the actual and desired center of mass positions.
