His designs are marked by clean, sweeping lines and a simplicity of hull and rig that show that they have been drawn by a true artist. In each design, he strips away every non-essential and leaves the true elements of a masterpiece. His father, Nathanael G. Herreshoff, had the same genius, but whereas the work of the father emphasized engineering perfection, the work of the son emphasized artistic perfection. Francis Herreshoff's work certainly shows the influence of his father, but his designs are tempered with an even older tradition. One of Captain Nat's famous designs was the little Buzzards Bay 12 1/2-footer, which may be examined in the plans at the back of this book in the form of Francis Herreshoff's slightly enlarged copy, the Buzzards Bay 14-footer. It is interesting to note the influence of this design on L. Francis' well-known cruising ketch, the H-28. But the schooner yacht America, which came out decades before Captain Nat began designing yachts, also had considerable influence on several famous Francis Herreshoff designs, such as the Tioga II, now Ticonderoga. And L. Francis was obviously intrigued with the possibilities of the double-ender, an ancient form of hull. The primary designs in this book are based on L. Francis Herreshoff's series of articles in the Rudder magazine of the 1940's and 1950's detailing how to build many of his designs. It was a very popular series, and a considerable number of boats were built according to the plans and instructions L. Francis included. We have added to these design plans for 46 additional small craft and cruising yachts designed by L. Francis. It is our hope that his book will lead to the building of more and more boats from the designs of L. Francis Herreshoff. There could be no more fitting tribute to him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If wisdom can be defined as common sense that has withstood the test of time, then Sensible Cruising is a wise book. It explains: Why a sensible cruise is affordable to almost anyone. Why the boat of choice for most cruisers is under 35 feet. Why lowering the cost doesn't devalue the cruise. How simplicity minimizes insulation from the experience. How to think in terms of how little, not how much, is really required. Drawing heavily on the philosophy of the sage of Walden Pond, this book is a gentle guide to the art of commonsense cruising which, in hardcover, was one of the 10 best-selling sailing books of all time. Now available for the first time in paperback, Sensible Cruising, a former main selection of the Dolphin Book Club, is more pertinent than ever during this time of economic retrenchment. No truer American existed than Thoreau . . . there was an excellent wisdom in him, proper to a rare class of men . . . [with] power of description and literary excellence . . . he chose to be rich by making his wants few, and supplying them himself . . . --Ralph Waldo Emerson I never would have imagined that Thoreau's philosophy could be so aptly applied to anything as disparate as cruising.--Dr. Walter Harding, author and Secretary of the Thoreau Society At sea, I learned how little a person needs, not how much.--Robin Lee Graham, Circumnavigator and author of DoveOne of the wonderful things about the cruising life is that it teaches you how little you can get along on, that to lead a fulfilling life it is not necessary to have a big pile of bucks. This may have been self-evident to Thoreau before the day of mass media, but in our modern environment it isa philosophy that is difficult to come by. Your readers should be aware that being judicious in their purchases can be financially rewarding at the end. We have always treated our boats as investments, and made money, on all of them.--Steve Dashew, Circumnavigator, and author of Bluewater Handbook and The Circumnavigator's HandbookIt does look sometimes as if the world were on its last legs. How many there are whose principal employment is is nowadays to eat their meals and go to the post-office.--Henry David Thoreau What others say about this book: This is one of the most intriguing and original books on cruising to appear in a long time . . . an admirably practical guide . . . with a delightful sense of humor . . . --John Rousmaniere, author of The Annapolis Book of Seamanship, The Sailing Lifestyle, Fastnet Force 10, and The Golden Pastime: A New History of YachtingFor anyone contemplating a prolonged sail . . . this book makes an excellent companion, full of sensible advice on the fine art of making-do when things don't go quite as expected.--SoundingsSensible Cruising is a refreshing change, written for those of us who dream of modest goals. Every cruising sailor, ambitious or unambitious, should read and treasure this memorable volume.--SailingCasey and Hackler suck the very marrow of life from Henry David Thoreau's writings to build a case for the small cruiser. The perfect instigation to get procrastinators and naysayers off the pot and over the horizon.--Dan Spurr, Senior Editor, Cruising World, and author of Spurr's Boatbook: Upgrading the Cruising Sailboat

In their small river craft, the Hubbards became one with the flowing river and its changing weathers. Book excerpt: By the turn of the twentieth century, racing for the America's Cup was no longer simply a gentleman's game. Fraught with danger and political tension, the contest for the Cup had become a showcase of technological innovation and national grit. In 1903, the fabulously wealthy tea tycoon, Sir Thomas Lipton, gave Britain's most celebrated naval architects carte blanche to produce Shamrock III. In response, the American designer Nathanael G. Herreshoff built Reliance, a defender that was so big and bold carrying more canvas than any single-masted vessel ever before that it ushered in a new era of naval architecture and fundamentally shaped the future of the America's Cup. From conception to construction, through hair-raising sea trials to the grand finale of a race like no other, this beautiful and dangerous vessel comes to life in Temple to the Wind, one of the most exciting sailing stories ever told."

Our world then was both wide and narrow—wide in the immensity of the sea and mountain; narrow in that the boat was very small, and we lived and camped, explored and swam in a little realm of our own making...” This is the fascinating true adventure story of a woman who packed her five children onto a twenty-five-foot boat and explored the coastal waters of British Columbia summer after summer in the 1920s and 1930s. Acting single-handedly as skipper, navigator, engineer and of course, mother, Muriel Wylie Blanchet saw her crew through exciting—and sometimes perilous—encounters with fog; rough seas, cougars, bears and whales, and did so with high spirits and courage. On these pages an independent woman with a deep respect for the native cultures of a region, and a refreshing wonderment about the natural world, comes to life. In The Curve of Time, she has left us with a sensitive and lyrically written account of their journeys and a timeless travel memoir not to be missed.

Book excerpt: Well-known author and sailor, Doug Logan, sets down his rare commonsense approach to being on the water, with his accumulation of smart tricks from a lifetime of devotion to boating and sailing. In the warm voice of a deeply knowledgeable friend, Doug describes the thoughts of an experienced boat operator handling the boat as they head out into open water, like a cop on the beat, looking for trouble on the guages, in the ship channel, keeping the crew involved. He addresses the seamanship needed to safely and joyously operate a small boat. With a lifetime of experience on boats, Doug has his favorite and most basic must-haves on a boat, not necessarily the usual GPS or the radar: he has a knife close to hand, a selection of rope, a bucket, and he can inspire every sailor, even the saltiest dockrat, to know which simple tools to have aboard, on powerboats and sailboats alike. More than how-to go boating, Doug writes for people who love boats, particularly sailboats, and describes the skills and sensibilities that a life around boats can help develop--things like self-reliance, adaptability, a sense of balance between daring and humility, and an appreciation of our place in the grand scheme. His collection of yarns, prescriptions, lists, avowals, and explorations establishes a poetic reverence for the life in a small boat on the water.
