At the same time, COVID-19 forced our nation online and the racial and economic digital divide which some thought had been bridged turned out to be wider than ever. As jobs were lost, particularly in service industries and other key sectors, people of color, especially Black and Brown people, took a disproportionate economic hit. Not only did HBCU leaders have to develop and implement plans to mitigate COVID’s deadly threat to the health and safety of their students, faculty, and staff, they also had to address the challenges associated with trying to provide remote learning for students who lacked computers and internet access at home; transporting students back home who didn’t have the resources to pay for transportation; and in some cases finding housing for students who could not return home or didn’t have a home or sufficient food, among other issues.

I’ll be going through the yearly traditions behind the holidays and inventions along the way. I hope you enjoy my historical journey. Learning about the settlers on Thread River was a lot of fun, how they made the Atherton Trail; the four Atherton families working together to survive the cold winters. They built strong shelters, saved food and wood for the winter, with the help of the natives. In 1835 the Atherton Settlement was established; the Atherton families built a strong community over the next twelve months with thirty families. They built their homes, barns, wagons, three churches, a mill, and a trading post. The first school in the settlement was founded in 1836, the Atherton School, was a one room schoolhouse built on the corner of Atherton Trail and Center Road where the Burton Memorial Library sits now. Betsey Atherton was the first teacher. Throughout my research, we have a lot to be thankful for; especially the four Atherton men that were brave enough to stay and never give up on the settlement. As more people joined the settlement for the next 20 years, some had military backgrounds, and mostly coming from New York. With all manner of trades to prosper as the community, when more schools were needed, the farmers would build one in each area for the children. 1855 Atherton Settlement combined with other farms to become Burton Township; the second largest township, but without a post office so, “HIDDEN.”

Also, as long as we were down there, we scheduled to drive to Orlando and spend a few days at Disney World, since Ruth had never been to the Magic Kingdom in Florida. All the preparations were made well in advance. I booked a round trip ticket on the AMTRAK auto train to leave the Lorton, VA station at 4:00 PM on Thursday October 14th and return one week later. I had a confirmed reservation. The train was scheduled to arrive at Sanford, FL by 8:00 AM, the next day. While waiting for the launch, I had made a two-night reservation at the Patrick Air (now called Space) Force Base Visitor Officers Quarters (VOQ). We planned on staying four nights with Charlie (4th son) in the Disney World area at his “time-share” located a few miles away from the entertainment center. These were the plans. They were not to be accomplished exactly due to many challenges and frustrations. After a leisurely lunch at one of Ashby Ponds restaurants, we went back to our apartment, finished packing, and sat around until three hours prior to the train’s departure. On the way down to Lorton at about 3 o’clock, I received a cell phone call from the train dispatcher inquiring about our location. I thought that odd. But I told him we should be there in plenty of time. The next thing I heard was that we should have been at the station no later than 2:30 PM. I looked at my ticket and discovered mixed in with ten other footnotes that were each one millimeter high, the notation that all passengers and vehicles must be checked in by 2:30 PM. When we got to the station at 3:30 PM we were refused boarding even though we had a confirmed reservation made many weeks previously (Strike 1). An offer was made to book us on the next day’s trip, but that would mean we would miss the launch.
