Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the unexpected convergence between the higher education systems of India and France. This has resulted due to links between higher education investment and economic growth in the light of the knowledge triangle and the Lisbon strategy, which has recently been replaced by the Horizon 2020 scheme. The current state of Indo-French cooperation is highlighted and discussed in detail, with chapter 4 co-authored by prominent Indian scholar Geeta Nair, and it is suggested that the prospective Indo-French knowledge management system will provide a competitive advantage in the contemporary knowledge economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of the colonization of Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu and South India by the French during the eighteenth century, and their interactions with the Indian rulers and populations in the political, economic, social and religious spheres. French Governors based in Pondicherry since François Martin up to Dupleix never acquired any territory for France through outright conquest. They or their masters in France never had any grand plan to establish a French empire in India. Some Indian rulers were friendly with the French and the English as it served their interests. The study demonstrates that the French colonizers and missionaries would not have survived in India without the collaboration of the Indian dubashes, merchants, certain Indian rulers and military men. This collaboration was not on an equal footing, as the sepoys, merchants and dubashes were always subordinate and submissive to the Europeans. Even Ananda Ranga Poullé, the most famous of the Indian dubashes had to resort to the art of flattery to be in the good books of his ‘master’. European arrival and presence in India heralded the beginning of a cultural clash between the Europeans and Indians, in which the former had the upper hand. There was never any partnership or ‘master-bania’ relationship between the French and the Indians. Instead, the relationship had all the trappings of a ‘master-subordinate’ relationship, where the subordinate even though he might be a dubash was always at the mercy of the colonizers. The element of force, aggressivity and violence was omnipresent in European presence and expansion in India, in the political, economic and religious fields. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrations: 130 colour and 28 b/w illustrations and 2 maps Description: The influence of French culture in India has been studied for many years. It has long been acknowledged that the French presence in India has had a major impact on the culture of the regions where they settled as well as elsewhere in the country, in less known and more subtle aspects. This book provides select examples where cross-cultural influences have endured. The trajectory of India's history was frequently determined by centres of trade that affected the political scenario of the time and resulted in military initiatives necessary to consolidate power bases. French military influence, however, was not restricted merely to securing French trading posts. It extended from bringing European military techniques to the construction of fortifications in Indian independent states thus changing the vocabulary of warfare in India. More importantly, the French settlements in the country still retain the architectural essence of the 17th century and the cross-cultural influences of the time are still clearly evident. In the 50th year of India's Independence, we celebrate the adaptation and assimilation of global cultures over the centuries.
