Book Synopsis Fields Medallists' Lectures, 2nd Edition by : Michael Atiyah
Download or read book Fields Medallists' Lectures, 2nd Edition written by Michael Atiyah and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003-11-03 with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Fields Medal does not have the same public recognition as the Nobel Prizes, they share a similar intellectual standing. It is restricted to one field — that of mathematics — and an age limit of 40 has become an accepted tradition. Mathematics has in the main been interpreted as pure mathematics, and this is not so unreasonable since major contributions in some applied areas can be (and have been) recognized with Nobel Prizes.A list of Fields Medallists and their contributions provides a bird's-eye view of mathematics over the past 60 years. It highlights the areas in which, at various times, greatest progress has been made. This volume does not pretend to be comprehensive, nor is it a historical document. On the other hand, it presents contributions from Fields Medallists and so provides a highly interesting and varied picture. The second edition of Fields Medallists' Lectures features additional contributions from the following Medallists: Kunihiko Kodaira (1954), Richard E Borcherds (1998), William T Gowers (1998), Maxim Kontsevich (1998), Curtis T McMullen (1998) and Vladimir Voevodsky (2002).

Book Synopsis The Problem of Catalan by : Yuri F. Bilu
Download or read book The Problem of Catalan written by Yuri F. Bilu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-09 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1842 the Belgian mathematician Eugène Charles Catalan asked whether 8 and 9 are the only consecutive pure powers of non-zero integers. 160 years after, the question was answered affirmatively by the Swiss mathematician of Romanian origin Preda Mihăilescu. In other words, 32 – 23 = 1 is the only solution of the equation xp – yq = 1 in integers x, y, p, q with xy ≠ 0 and p, q ≥ 2. In this book we give a complete and (almost) self-contained exposition of Mihăilescu’s work, which must be understandable by a curious university student, not necessarily specializing in Number Theory. We assume a very modest background:a standard university course of algebra, including basic Galois theory, and working knowledge of basic algebraic number theory.

Book Synopsis Basic Algebraic Geometry 1 by : Igor R. Shafarevich
Download or read book Basic Algebraic Geometry 1 written by Igor R. Shafarevich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shafarevich's Basic Algebraic Geometry has been a classic and universally used introduction to the subject since its first appearance over 40 years ago. As the translator writes in a prefatory note, ``For all [advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate] students, and for the many specialists in other branches of math who need a liberal education in algebraic geometry, Shafarevich’s book is a must.'' The third edition, in addition to some minor corrections, now offers a new treatment of the Riemann--Roch theorem for curves, including a proof from first principles. Shafarevich's book is an attractive and accessible introduction to algebraic geometry, suitable for beginning students and nonspecialists, and the new edition is set to remain a popular introduction to the field.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume of Shafarevich's introductory book on algebraic geometry focuses on schemes, complex algebraic varieties and complex manifolds. As with Volume 1 the author has revised the text and added new material, e.g. a section on real algebraic curves. Although the material is more advanced than in Volume 1 the algebraic apparatus is kept to a minimum making the book accessible to non-specialists. It can be read independently of Volume 1 and is suitable for beginning graduate students in mathematics as well as in theoretical physics.

Book Synopsis Bergman Kernels and Symplectic Reduction by : Xiaonan Ma
Download or read book Bergman Kernels and Symplectic Reduction written by Xiaonan Ma and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors generalize several recent results concerning the asymptotic expansions of Bergman kernels to the framework of geometric quantization and establish an asymptotic symplectic identification property. More precisely, they study the asymptotic expansion of the $G$-invariant Bergman kernel of the $\mathrm{spin}^c$ Dirac operator associated with high tensor powers of a positive line bundle on a symplectic manifold admitting a Hamiltonian action of a compact connected Lie group $G$. The authors also develop a way to compute the coefficients of the expansion, and compute the first few of them; especially, they obtain the scalar curvature of the reduction space from the $G$-invariant Bergman kernel on the total space. These results generalize the corresponding results in the non-equivariant setting, which have played a crucial role in the recent work of Donaldson on stability of projective manifolds, to the geometric quantization setting. As another kind of application, the authors establish some Toeplitz operator type properties in semi-classical analysis in the framework of geometric quantization. The method used is inspired by Local Index Theory, especially by the analytic localization techniques developed by Bismut and Lebeau.
Book Synopsis Crystalline Cohomology of Algebraic Stacks and Hyodo-Kato Cohomology by : Martin C. Olsson
Download or read book Crystalline Cohomology of Algebraic Stacks and Hyodo-Kato Cohomology written by Martin C. Olsson and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this text the author uses stack-theoretic techniques to study the crystalline structure on the de Rham cohomology of a proper smooth scheme over a $p$-adic field and applications to $p$-adic Hodge theory. He develops a general theory of crystalline cohomology and de Rham-Witt complexes for algebraic stacks and applies it to the construction and study of the $(\varphi, N, G)$-structure on de Rham cohomology. Using the stack-theoretic point of view instead of log geometry, he develops the ingredients needed to prove the $C_{\text {st}}$-conjecture using the method of Fontaine, Messing, Hyodo, Kato, and Tsuji, except for the key computation of $p$-adic vanishing cycles. He also generalizes the construction of the monodromy operator to schemes with more general types of reduction than semistable and proves new results about tameness of the action of Galois on cohomology.

Book Synopsis Algebraic Geometry by : Robin Hartshorne
Download or read book Algebraic Geometry written by Robin Hartshorne and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to abstract algebraic geometry, with the only prerequisites being results from commutative algebra, which are stated as needed, and some elementary topology. More than 400 exercises distributed throughout the book offer specific examples as well as more specialised topics not treated in the main text, while three appendices present brief accounts of some areas of current research. This book can thus be used as textbook for an introductory course in algebraic geometry following a basic graduate course in algebra. Robin Hartshorne studied algebraic geometry with Oscar Zariski and David Mumford at Harvard, and with J.-P. Serre and A. Grothendieck in Paris. He is the author of "Residues and Duality", "Foundations of Projective Geometry", "Ample Subvarieties of Algebraic Varieties", and numerous research titles.
