Book excerpt: The series Topics in Current Chemistry Collections presents critical reviews from the journal Topics in Current Chemistry organized in topical volumes. The scope of coverage is all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science. The goal of each thematic volume is to give the non-specialist reader, whether in academia or industry, a comprehensive insight into an area where new research is emerging which is of interest to a larger scientific audience. Each review within the volume critically surveys one aspect of that topic and places it within the context of the volume as a whole. The most significant developments of the last 5 to 10 years are presented using selected examples to illustrate the principles discussed. The coverage is not intended to be an exhaustive summary of the field or include large quantities of data, but should rather be conceptual, concentrating on the methodological thinking that will allow the non-specialist reader to understand the information presented. Contributions also offer an outlook on potential future developments in the field.

Book excerpt: Nanostructured Semiconductor Oxides for the Next Generation of Electronics and Functional Devices focuses on the development of semiconductor nanocrystals, their technologies and applications, including energy harvesting, solar cells, solid oxide fuel cells, and chemical sensors. Semiconductor oxides are used in electronics, optics, catalysts, sensors, and other functional devices. In their 2D form, the reduction in size confers exceptional properties, useful for creating faster electronics and more efficient catalysts. After explaining the physics affecting the conductivity and electron arrangement of nanostructured semiconductors, the book addresses the structural and chemical modification of semiconductor nanocrystals during material growth. It then covers their use in nanoscale functional devices, particularly in electronic devices and carbon nanotubes. It explores the impact of 2D nanocrystals, such as graphene, chalcogenides, and oxide nanostructures, on research and technology, leading to a discussion of incorporating graphene and semiconductor nanostructures into composites for use in energy storage. The final three chapters focus on the applications of these functional materials in photovoltaic cells, solid oxide fuel cells, and in environmental sensors including pH, dissolved oxygen, dissolved organic carbon, and dissolved metal ion sensors. Nanostructured Semiconductor Oxides for the Next Generation of Electronics and Functional Devices is a crucial resource for scientists, applied researchers, and production engineers working in the fabrication, design, testing, characterization, and analysis of new semiconductor materials. This book is a valuable reference for those working in the analysis and characterization of new nanomaterials, and for those who develop technologies for practical devices fabrication. Focuses on the development of semiconductor nanocrystals, their technologies and applications, including energy harvesting, solar cells, solid oxide fuel cells, and chemical sensors Reviews fundamental physics of conductivity and electron arrangement before proceeding to practical applications A vital resource for applied researchers and production engineers working with new semiconductor materials

This book was released on 2012 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanocrystal quantum dots exhibit size-dependent optoelectronic properties and provide intriguing scientific and technological opportunities. Most proposed technologies based nanocrystals depend on macroscopic functional assemblies of nanocrystals in which the nanocrystals interact with each other to give rise to new collective properties - also called as artificial solids. As in the analogous atomic crystals, the optoelectronic properties of artificial solids are governed by (1) the energy levels of nanocrystals, (2) electronic coupling between nanocrystals, and (3) the symmetry of the nanocrystal superlattice. These issues add many levels of complexity to the design of artificial solids and, for the successful development of nanocrystal based technologies, it is crucial to gain deep understanding on the structure-property relationship of nanocrystals on multiple length scales. In this dissertation, I will present studies that show insights into the three governing factors of the optoelectronic properties of artificial solids mentioned above. (1) Nanocrystal energy levels: a direct correlation between interfacial energy level offsets between lead chalcogenide nanocrystals and ZnO layers with photovoltaic device performance is presented. Based on obtained insights on the size dependent photovoltaic properties of lead chalcogenide nanocrystals, first demonstration of solution processed nanocrystal tandem solar cells was achieved. (2) Inter-nanocrystal electronic coupling: rates of photogenerated exciton dissociation in nanocrystal assemblies as a function of inter-nanocrystal spacing are probed. The results show that excitons dissociate via tunneling induced delocalization among neighboring nanocrystals. Based on insights obtained from this work, drastically improved performance of solution processed nanocrystal infrared light emitting diodes is demonstrated. (3) Nanocrystal superlattice symmetry: interaction between ligand molecules on the surface of nanocrystals play critical roles in self-assembly process. Differences in the coverage of surface ligands bound to nanocrystals can be exploited to tune the shape of nanocrystal interaction potential during the self-assembly. Denser ligand coverage causes nanocrystals to interact as spheres and face-centered cubic structure is formed. In contrast, sparse ligand coverage amplifies the aspherical shape of the core crystallite and can cause non-close packed structures such as body-centered cubic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semiconductor nanocrystals are used widely as biological labels and components of optoelectronic devices. The spectral tunability and stability of these materials makes them ideal building blocks and probes. This thesis describes work on a class of semiconductor nanocrystals with properties controlled by the structure and sequence of nucleic acids. Controlling nanocrystal properties using rationally designed nucleic acids structures and sequences presents a new means to engineer inorganic structures with desired properties, and provides a means to produce biofunctionalized imaging labels in a single step. The materials produced using this approach have favorable characteristics, including bright emission, high stability, and straightforward synthetic manipulation. The properties of semiconductor nanocrystals are known to be strongly dependent on the ligand used during synthesis that serves to passivate the surface. We endeavored to use a class of ligands that would have intrinsic self-assembly properties and inherent biocompatibility. We therefore tested nucleic acids including DNA and RNA molecules as ligands for cadmium and lead-based nanocrystals formation. Nucleic acids molecules passivate on semiconductor nanocrystal surface through their nucleobase functionalities as well as the phosphate backbone. Among the four natural mononucleotides, guanine is the most effective nucleotide for semiconductor nanocrystals formation. Semiconductor nanocrystals synthesized with different DNA homopolymer sequences possess distinct luminescence intensities. A general approach is being developed to systematically control semiconductor nanocrystals luminescence using rationally designed DNA sequences. In addition, the effect of nucleic acids structure on CdS semiconductor nanocrystals properties is elucidated using transfer RNA molecules as a ligand system, and differences in size and morphology were observed for the semiconductor nanocrystals synthesized with different RNA structures.DNA-passivated semiconductor nanocrystals exhibit low cytotoxicity and high stability in biological media and thus are superior for bioimaging applications. Given the molecular recognition properties of DNA and RNA aptamers with other biomolecules such as proteins or cell surface receptors, we were inspired to use a bi-functional DNA template to generate biofunctionalized semiconductor nanocrystals in a simple one-pot process. This novel strategy is realized by the design of a chimeric DNA template with a phosphorothioate domain for semiconductor nanocrystals passivation and a phosphate domain (aptamer) for biomolecule recognition. CdTe semiconductor nanocrystals synthesized with the chimeric DNA template possess high specificities towards the cognate DNA, protein, and cancer cell targets.
