The two problems associated with this simulation; boundary layers and entering flows with non-aligned characteristics, have been successfully overcome through the combination of a plane-implicit solver and semicoarsening. In fact, this multigrid algorithm exhibits a textbook multigrid convergence rate, i.e., the solution of the discrete system of equations is obtained in a fixed amount of computational work, independently of the grid size, grid stretching factor and non-alignment parameter. Also, a parallel variant of the smoother based on a four-color ordering of planes is investigated.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "This paper presents an efficient parallel multigrid solver for speeding up the computation of a 3-D model that treats the flow of a viscous fluid over a flat plate. The main interest of this simulation lies in exhibiting some basic difficulties that prevent optimal multigrid efficiencies from being achieved. As the computing platform, we have used Coral, a Beowulf-class system based on Intel Pentium processors and equipped with GigaNet cLAN and switched Fast Ethernet networks. Our study not only examines the scalability of the solver but also includes a performance evaluation of Coral where the investigated solver has been used to compare several of its design choices, namely, the interconnection network (GigaNet versus switched Fast-Ethernet) and the node configuration (dual nodes versus single nodes). As a reference, the performance results have been compared with those obtained with the NAS-MG benchmark."

Furthermore, the novel concepts of affordable parallel computing as well as metacomputing show that exciting developments are still taking place.As is often pointed out however, the real power of parallel CFD comes from the combination of all the disciplines involved: Physics, mathematics, and computer science. This is probably one of the principal reasons for the continued popularity of the Parallel CFD Conferences series, as well as the inspiration behind much of the excellent work carried out on the subject. This includes most of the ?uid dynamics that one ?nds in everyday life from the ?ow of air in a room to most weather phenomena. Inundertakingthesimulationofincompressible?uid?ows,oneoftentakes many issues for granted. As these ?ows become more realistic, the problems encountered become more vexing from a computational point-of-view. These range from the benign to the profound. At once, one must contend with the basic character of incompressible ?ows where sound waves have been analytically removed from the ?ow. As a consequence vortical ?ows have been analytically “preconditioned,” but the ?ow has a certain non-physical character (sound waves of in?nite velocity). At low speeds the ?ow will be deterministic and ordered, i.e., laminar. Laminar ?ows are governed by a balance between the inertial and viscous forces in the ?ow that provides the stability. Flows are often characterized by a dimensionless number known as the Reynolds number, which is the ratio of inertial to viscous forces in a ?ow. Laminar ?ows correspond to smaller Reynolds numbers. Even though laminar ?ows are organized in an orderly manner, the ?ows may exhibit instabilities and bifurcation phenomena which may eventually lead to transition and turbulence. Numerical modelling of suchphenomenarequireshighaccuracyandmostimportantlytogaingreater insight into the relationship of the numerical methods with the ?ow physics.

Single tridiagonal linear systems and vectorized computation of reactive flow are also discussed. Comprised of 13 chapters, this volume begins by classifying parallel computers and describing techniques for performing matrix operations on them. The reader is then introduced to FFTs and the tridiagonal linear system as well as the ICCG method. Different versions of the conjugate gradient method for solving the time-dependent diffusion equation are considered. Subsequent chapters deal with two- and three-dimensional fluid flow calculations, paying particular attention to the principal issues in designing efficient numerical methods for hydrodynamic calculations; the decisions that a numerical modeler must make to optimize chemically reactive flow simulations; and how to handle disk-to-core data transfer and storage allocation for the solution of the implicit equations for three-dimensional flows. The book also describes the time-split finite difference scheme for solving the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation for flows through slotted nozzles. Finally, the large-scale stimulation of plasmas, as carried out on a small computer with an array processor, is discussed. This monograph should be of interest to specialists in computer science.
