Book excerpt: Excerpt from Semi-Scientific Lectures The following papers were at various times read before the Folkestone Natural History Society, and were, without exception, hurriedly written in the very brief leisure intervals of an active practice, usually late in the night; they do not profess to be original; indeed they are, for the most part, merely abstracts of various scientific works, such as those of Darwin, Guillemin, Lubbock, Figuier, Gosse, Tyndall, &c., &c., which are not universally read by the members of our Society. I have somewhat reluctantly consented to publish these fugitive papers, because I am but too well aware of their many imperfections but if I succeed in inducing any of my readers to pursue the subjects I have touched on to the sources indicated I shall be more than satisfied. Taking readers through the history of modern science, Whitehead shows how cultural history has affected science over the ages in relation to such major intellectual themes as romanticism, relativity, quantum theory, religion, and movements for social progress.
