All told, he attended schools, such as they were, about a year. Dur ing the intervals of his work, he is Said to have read, written and ciphered incessantly. Although knowledge was not acquired rapidly by him, he mastered such books as he could procure. Among these were the Bible, Aesop's Fables, Pilgrim's Progress, and a history of the United States.
