Download or read book Los cambios en el mundo del trabajo del periodista written by Figaro, Roseli and published by Editorial UOC. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Age of Dissent by : Martín Bowen
Download or read book The Age of Dissent written by Martín Bowen and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2023-05-15 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Age of Dissent argues that the defining feature of the Age of Revolutions in Latin America was the emergence of dissent as an inescapable component of political life. While contestation and seditious ideas had always been present in the region, never before had local regimes been forced to consider radical dissension as an unavoidable dimension of politics. Focusing on urban Chile between the first anticolonial conspiracy of 1780 and the consolidation of an authoritarian regime in 1833, the book argues that this revolution was caused by how people practiced communication and framed its power.

Book Synopsis Stuck with Tourism by : Matilde Córdoba Azcárate
Download or read book Stuck with Tourism written by Matilde Córdoba Azcárate and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism has become one of the most powerful forces organizing the predatory geographies of late capitalism. It creates entangled futures of exploitation and dependence, extracting resources and labor, and eclipsing other ways of doing, living, and imagining life. And yet, tourism also creates jobs, encourages infrastructure development, and in many places inspires the only possibility of hope and well-being. Stuck with Tourism explores the ambivalent nature of tourism by drawing on ethnographic evidence from the Mexican Yucatán Peninsula, a region voraciously transformed by tourism development over the past forty years. Contrasting labor and lived experiences at the beach resorts of Cancún, protected natural enclaves along the Gulf coast, historical buildings of the colonial past, and maquilas for souvenir production in the Maya heartland, this book explores the moral, political, ecological, and everyday dilemmas that emerge when, as Yucatán’s inhabitants put it, people get stuck in tourism’s grip.
Book Synopsis Viceroy Güemes’s Mexico by : Christoph Rosenmüller
Download or read book Viceroy Güemes’s Mexico written by Christoph Rosenmüller and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2024-03-15 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viceroy Güemes’s Mexico: Rituals, Religion, and Revenue examines the career of Juan Francisco Güemes y Horcasitas, viceroy of New Spain from 1746 to 1755. It provides the best account yet of how the colonial reform process most commonly known as the Bourbon Reforms did not commence with the arrival of José de Gálvez, the visitador general to New Spain appointed in 1765. Rather, Güemes, ennobled as the conde de Revillagigedo in 1749, pushed through substantial reforms in the late 1740s and early 1750s, most notably the secularization of the doctrinas (turning parishes administering to Natives over to diocesan priests) and the state takeover of the administration of the alcabala tax in Mexico City. Both measures served to strengthen royal authority and increase fiscal revenues, the twin goals historians have long identified as central to the Bourbon reform project. Güemes also managed to implement these reforms without stirring up the storm of protest that attended the Gálvez visita. The book thus recasts how historians view eighteenth-century colonial reform in New Spain and the Spanish empire generally. Christoph Rosenmüller’s study of Güemes is the first in English-language scholarship that draws on significant research in a family archive. Using these rarely consulted sources allows for a deeper understanding of daily life and politics. Whereas most scholars have relied on the official communications in the great archives to emphasize tightly choreographed rituals, for instance, Rosenmüller’s work shows that much interaction in the viceregal palace was rather informal—a fact that scholars have overlooked. The sources throw light on meeting and greeting people, ongoing squabbles over hierarchy and ceremony, walks on the Alameda square, the role of the vicereine and their children, and working hours in the offices. Such insights are drawn from a rare family archive harboring a trove of personal communications. The resulting book paints a vivid portrait of a society undergoing change earlier than many historians have believed.
Book Synopsis Books in the Catholic World during the Early Modern Period by : Natalia Maillard Álvarez
Download or read book Books in the Catholic World during the Early Modern Period written by Natalia Maillard Álvarez and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-12-09 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Reformation is often alluded to as Gutenberg’s child. Could it then be said that the Counter-Reformation was his step-child? The close relationship between the Reformation, the printing press and books has received extensive, historiographical attention, which is clearly justified; however, the links between books and the Catholic world have often been limited to a tale of censorship and repression. The current volume looks beyond this, with a series of papers that aim to shed new light on the complex relationships between Catholicism and books during the early modern period, before and after the religious schism, with special focus on trade, common reads and the mechanisms used to control readership in different territories, together with the similarities between the Catholic and the Protestant worlds. Contributors include: Stijn Van Rossem, Rafael M. Pérez García, Pedro J. Rueda Ramírez, Idalia García Aguilar, Bianca Lindorfer, Natalia Maillard Álvarez, and Adrien Delmas.
Download or read book Between Jerusalem and Europe written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between Jerusalem and Europe: Essays in Honour of Bianca Kühnel analyses how Jerusalem is translated into the visual and material culture of medieval, early modern and contemporary Europe, and in what ways European encounters with the city have shaped its holy sites. The volume also demonstrates methodological shifts in the study of Jerusalem in Western art by mapping the diversity of concepts that underlie imaginations of the city as an earthly presence and a heavenly realization, as a physical and a mental space, and as a unique location which is multiplied and re-imagined in numerous copies elsewhere. Contributors are Lily Arad, Pnina Arad, Barbara Baert, Neta B. Bodner, Iris Gerlitz, Anastasia Keshman Wasserman, Katrin Kogman-Appel, Ora Limor, Galit Noga-Banai, Robert Ousterhout, Yamit Rachman-Schrire, Bruno Reudenbach, Alessandro Scafi, Tsafra Siew, and Victor I. Book Synopsis Bessarion’s Treasure by : Sergei Mariev
Download or read book Bessarion’s Treasure written by Sergei Mariev and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-12-07 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of Bessarion's contribution to the history of Byzantine and Renaissance philosophy and culture during the 15th century is beyond dispute. However, an adequate appreciation of his contribution still remains a desideratum of scholarly research. One serious impediment to scholarly progress is the fact that the critical edition of his main philosophical work "In Calumniatorem Platonis" is incomplete and that this work has not been translated in its entirety into any modern language yet. Same can be stated about several minor but equally important treatises on literary, theological and philosophical subjects. This makes editing, translating and interpreting his literary, religious and philosophical works a scholarly priority. Papers assembled in this volume highlight a number of philological, philosophical and historical aspects that are crucial to our understanding of Bessarion's role in the history of European civilization and to setting the directions of future research in this field.
