An individual's self-perceptions contribute to their global self-worth, and even predict performance (Cuellar, 2014; Harter & Neemann, 2012). Self-perception is an increasingly popular area of study, and there is a gap in the research as it pertains to college student-athletes (Harter & Neemann, 2012). This study measures self- perception scores, as well as experiences with racial discrimination, of 306 NCAA Division I student-athletes using the Self-Perception Profile for College Students (Harter & Neemann, 2012). Scores are compared across race/ethnicity and gender. Findings suggest that White student-athletes have significantly higher self-perception scores than racial minorities, and recent discrimination (discrimination experiences within the last year) is a significant predictor of multiple areas of self-perception. Results also indicate significant gender differences exist in several areas of self-perception. The implications of this study prompt faculty, and other campus stakeholders to pursue positive relationships with the student-athletes they encounter. Positive relationships between student-athletes and faculty can help raise student-athlete self-perceptions, and in turn, performance in a variety of areas.

Book excerpt: Research on the graduation rates of specific demographic groups indicates that African American male student-athletes are not graduating at the same rate as their peers (Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports, 2009). In addressing the issue of graduation rates, scholars cite that attendance at predominantly white institutions (PWIs) is influential to the academic achievement of African American male student-athletes because they are subject to racial discrimination on college campuses (Hyatt, 2003) and racial discrimination has negative effects on academic achievement (Thomas, Caldwell, Faison, & Jackson, 2009). Given that research has linked academic self-concept and academic achievement for African American male college students (Spurgeon & Meyers, 2003) but a racially discriminatory college environment is damaging to academic achievement and identity variables influence perceptions of discrimination (Sellers & Shelton, 2003), the purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between identity variables (i.e. racial and athletic identity), environmental factors (i.e. racial discrimination) and academic outcomes (i.e. academic self-concept and GPAs). To this end, online survey research was used to gather data from African American male student-athletes in order to examine the above relationships. Participants were 168 African American male student-athletes at Division 1 predominately White institutions (PWIs). Data analyses consisted of 1-sample t-tests and moderated hierarchical regression analyses, with analyses being conducted in two parts. Part I found that African American male student-athletes report experiencing racial discrimination in an academic setting. Moreover, Part I found that the racial identity variables of centrality and the public regard racial were significant predictors of athletic and academic racial discrimination. Athletic identity variables were not significant predictors of racial discrimination. Part II found that racial discrimination was a significant predictor of academic achievement as measured by GPA. Athletic discrimination and differential academic treatment positively influenced academic achievement but academic differential effect negatively influenced academic achievement. Finally, the racial identity variable of private regard moderated the relationship between academic racial discrimination and GPA. The results of the study are discussed and contextualized with the larger body of literature examining the academic achievement of African American male student-athletes.

Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between college student-athletes' well-being, self-ratings of mental toughness in sport, and perceptions of the coach-created motivational climate. One hundred and two NCAA Division I female student-athletes completed measures of well-being, mental toughness, and coach-created motivational climate over the course of a university academic year. The author hypothesized that mental toughness and perceptions of the coach-created motivational climate would predict well-being. Overall, the results of the study found a predictive relationship between well-being and mental toughness, and well-being, mental toughness, and an ego-involving coach-created motivational climate. These results provide initial evidence that cognitive, affective, personality, and environmental factors influence student-athlete well-being. The findings also demonstrate that Henriques et al.'s (2017) Nested Model of Well-being (NM) may be an effective model to understand the unique factors that influence student-athlete well-being. For example, the results of the study indicate that the construct of mental toughness may overlap with Henriques et al.'s (2014) conceptualization of adaptive potentials (one's skills and abilities to function effectively in the environment). Additionally, the influence of a student-athlete's perception of the coach-created motivational climate on well-being may be aligned with the NM's characterization of the environmental domain. These results indicate a need to study other factors that influence student-athlete well-being. This study demonstrates a need to develop measures that assess student-athlete well-being while also accounting for the unique cultural components of college athletics that may influence the well-being of student athletes.

The components of Self- Perception include Scholastic Competence, Social Competence, Athletic Competence, Behavioral Conduct, Physical Appearance, and Global Self-Worth. The participants (N = 85) were eighth-grade students from a public magnet middle school in New England. The participants completed a demographic questionnaire and the Self-Perceptions Profile for Children (SPPC; Harter, 2012), a 36-item 4-point Likert-style scale designed to measure the six components of self-perception. Six independent group t-tests were used to determine if differences existed between athletes and nonathletes for each of the six subscales of the SPPC. Additionally, a Spearman's Rho correlation test was used to determine the relationship between length of time spent in organized sport and selfperception scores of athletes. The researcher found that a difference in Athletic Competence existed between athletes and nonathletes. A positive relationship also existed between the length of time spent in sport and Social Competence scores of athletes.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of the present study was twofold: (a) to examine the association between coach-athlete relationship quality and sport domain-specific self-esteem in collegiate athletes and (b) to assess differences between class levels within this potential correlation. Two established questionnaires, the Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (Jowett & Ntoumanis, 2004) and the Elite Athlete Self-Description Questionnaire (Marsh et al., 1997), were administered electronically in this crosssectional study. Participants (N = 180) included male and female collegiate athletes, representing eighteen NCAA sports. Correlation analysis was used to assess the relationship among coach-athlete relationship quality and sport domain-specific self-esteem. Fisher’s z transformation was used to test for differences in this association across class levels. Significant associations in theoretically expected directions were found between coach-athlete relationship variables and sport domainspecific self-esteem; higher quality coach-athlete relationships associated with higher self-esteem perceptions and vice versa. When comparing these associations by class level, a difference was only found between sophomores and seniors. The findings of this study show an association between coach-athlete relationship quality and sport-domain specific self-esteem. Furthermore, results suggest that an individual’s age or class year may not influence the strength of this relationship. The findings of this study support development of higher quality coach-athlete relationships and the enhancement of athlete self-perception to facilitate adaptive sport experiences for collegiate athletes.

Book excerpt: This study examines the psychological dynamics of self-esteem and belonging among undergraduate students of color at a private, Division 1 (D1), predominantly white institution (PWI) located in the South. Specifically, the study ascertains whether and how (among students of color) athletic status procures particular social and esteem advantages not extended to non-athletes by virtue of social support. Hypothesis 1 stipulates that student athletes of color will report greater well-being (e.g., self-esteem, belonging) than non-athlete students of color. Hypothesis 2 takes gender into consideration, stating that male athletes of color will report greater self-esteem and belonging than female athletes of color, who will still report higher levels of positive outcomes than female non-athletes of color. The gender discrepancy is predicated on the notion that male athletes are adhering to a positive stereotype, whereas female athletes may be labeled un-feminine due to their physicality. Hypothesis 3 investigates the specific mechanisms that underlie possible group differences in self-esteem and belonging, purporting social support from team members and staff -- above and beyond the support proffered by the university at large -- as the chief mediator. Results are presented in group comparisons highlighting mechanisms that explain possible disparities in self-esteem, belonging, college persistence and social support between male and female athletes and non-athletes of color. This research presents a unique angle on college adjustment for minority students at predominantly white institutions.

This population makes up approximately half of the 463,000 student-athletes competing in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) (Irick, 2013). Previous research has explored the benefits and drawbacks of women’s participation in sport and specific experiences within the female student-athlete experience. While research heavily encourages the adolescent girl’s participation in sports, there is conflicting research regarding the impact sport has on the experiences of female student-athletes at an elite level. LaFountaine (2007) found that female student-athletes are not thriving in relation to various aspects of holistic wellness. However, McLester, Hardin and Hoppe (2014) found that very few female student-athletes were susceptible to eating disorders and many had high levels of self-esteem and positive body image. Previous literature has explored the experiences of female student-athletes experiencing depression through a phenomenological perspective, however this whole population has not been explored using hermeneutic phenomenology (Jones et al., 2010; LaFountaine, 2007). The purpose of exploring this population through hermeneutic phenomenology is to gain a rich understanding of the experiences of collegiate female student-athletes so that administrators, coaches, and support staff can gain understanding of their experiences to guide their decisions and actions when leading this population. Participants were female student-athletes in their third or fourth year of eligibility at an NCAA, Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institution. One in-depth, unstructured interview was conducted with each participant. Interviews were unstructured to allow the participant to direct the conversation and discuss aspects of her experience that seem most relevant to share. The transcripts were then analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) in which four themes emerged: transition blues, grinding it out, student-athlete bubble, and passing it on. Subthemes within these themes included: freshman year blues, senior year blues, injury, people leave, pressure, coaching issues, consuming, overwhelming support, my team, learning, and teaching. By examining the collegiate female student-athlete’s experience, athletic department staff can gain greater understanding of these experiences and better adapt to meet the needs of each student-athlete to enhance the experiences of this population.
