Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This study investigated the relationship between perceived transformational leadership behaviors and student achievement. School achievement data and data collected through the Principal Leadership Questionnaire (PLQ) were examined to determine if a statistical relationship existed between the tranformational leadership behaviors of principal, as perceived by teachers and principals, with overall student achievement, mathematics achievement, and language arts achievement. Survey data were collected from principals and teachers in a Southwest Tn school district. A series of independent samples t-tests, and analysis of variance (ANOVA), and a Kruskal-Wallis test revealed a connection between the perceived behaviors exhibited by principals in higher performing schools as compared with lower performing schools. A significant difference in the teachers' perceptions was also identified in relation to a principal's ability to (a) articulate a vision, (b) provide an appropriate model, (c) foster the acceptance of group goals, (d) provide intellectual stimulation, and (f) hold high expectations. However, the study did not find a significant difference in the teachers' perceptions of a principals's ability to provide support to teachers. When determining the relationship between perceived leadership behaviors and student behavior, there was a statistically significant difference in the language art achievement of students in schools in which teachers' perceptions of transformational leadership behaviors were higher then that of the principals'. The relationship was not significant, however, for mathematics achievement and overall student achievement.

Book excerpt: The present study examined the relationship between aspiring school principals' self-perceived competency regarding expected leadership behaviors as indicated by the domains identified in the 2011 Florida Principal Leadership Standards and their perception of their leadership style as indicated by the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (Bass & Avolio, 1994). The conceptual frameworks of this study included leadership style, as defined and conceptualized by Bass and Avolio's Full Range Leadership Model and measured by the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ), and leadership behavior, as defined through the domains of the Florida Principal Leadership Standards (FPLS, 2011). Both the MLQ and the FPLS questionnaire served as data collection instruments. The three main leadership styles measured by the MLQ (including transformational, transactional, and laissez-faire leadership) served as the independent variables, and the four leadership domains measured by the FPLS questionnaire (i.e., student achievement, instructional leadership, organizational leadership, professional and ethical behavior) served as the dependent variables. The research sample included participants currently enrolled in a state-approved Level 1 Educational Leadership Program and were recruited to participate from 3 state universities in Florida. Both survey instruments were administered via a single, anonymous link embedded in an email containing both an introduction and description of the research study and informed consent. Of 200 potential participants, 48 respondents or 24% of the original sample returned completed surveys. Using canonical correlation analysis, the study found that the degree of respondents' self-perceived ability to competently perform the leadership behaviors as identified by the four 2011 FPLS domains could be explained to some degree by respondents' self-perceived leadership style (as identified on the MLQ). Two canonical roots were interpreted. The MLQ predictor variables accounted for 48% of the variance in the FPLS subscale scores (root 1 Rc2 =.48; p Rc2 = .117) accounted for a moderate amount of the shared variance between the two sets (i.e., 12%) and was not statistically significant (p > .05). The correlation in this root was due primarily to a direct relationship between MLQ transactional leadership and the professional and ethical behavior domain of the FPLS. Additionally, the findings indicated that participants of Level 1 Educational Leadership programs felt confident in their ability to competently perform the expected behavioral indicators of the 2011 FPLS domains. .05). The 13 core competencies that inform the behavior of leaders are visionary leadership, curriculum and instruction, assessment, reflection, unity of purpose, diversity, inquiry, collaboration, professional development, professionalism, instructional leadership, organizational management, and learning community.The purpose of this study was to investigate: (a) the extent to which principals percieved that they valued and exhibited behaviors informed by the aforementioned core competencies, (b) the extent to which teachers percieved that principals valued and exhibited behaviors informed by the core competencies, and (c) the relationship, if any, between teacher perceptions and teacher motivation. The Leadership Behavior Inventory and the Attitude Toward Teaching Survey provided data for the research.It was hypothesized that the higher the teachers' perceptions were regarding principal leadership behavior the stronger the teachers' motivation would be. Data found that teachers were more likely to have higher self-efficacy, collective efficacy, and intrinsic motivation when they perceived that principals valued and implemented behaviors informed by the 13 core competencies. This confirms past research, showing that that the 13 core competencies are critical in creating transformational leaders within 21st-century schools.

Book excerpt: Organizations devote considerable resources developing employees' capacity for leadership because they believe that "leaders" are essential in the operations of their organizations. Unfortunately, organizations do not have the time or resources to send their employees off for lengthy leader development training programs. This has contributed to the growing popularity of short-term training programs which are relatively inexpensive to conduct. However, researchers are increasingly requesting more empirical studies that examine the impact of these programs, yet these requests have remained largely disregarded. Additionally, there is a lack for developing methodologies to determine whether or not involvement in a short-term program facilitates change in an individual's transformational and transactional leadership behaviors. To address this lack of inquiry, this study examined the impact of a well-recognized leader development simulation on transformational and transactional leadership behaviors among participating mid and upper level managers. A quasi-experimental pre-test, post-test research design was used to measure the impact both from the managers' perspective and their direct reports' perspective. Based on an analysis of the assessments completed by 50 managers and 81 direct reports, the findings suggest that managers perceived significant and positive changes in all of their transformational leadership behaviors and reductions in their transactional behaviors. However, their direct reports perceived significant changes in only one dimension of their manager's transformational leadership behavior: individualized consideration. Direct reports felt that their managers spent more time teaching and coaching them, helped them to develop their strengths, and considered their individual needs more as a result of participating in the training program. Direct reports also saw improvements in leadership effectiveness and were more satisfied with their managers after the training program. In addition, managers who under-estimated their transformational leadership behavior were rated the highest in transformational leadership by their direct reports. Furthermore, managers who dominated more on the Myers-Briggs perceiving scale than the judging scale were identified as being more transformational than other personality types. The findings of this study contribute empirical support for the impact of a leader development program and demonstrate that individuals can change some of their transformational leadership behaviors from participation in a short-term training program.
