Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depression is an area of concern for college students. College students have higher rates of depression than non-college peers. Additionally, depression is related to multiple risk-taking behaviors and lower performance in school. This study examined the relationships between gender, friendship support, self-esteem and depression ratings in a Midwestern college sample. Undergraduate psychology students completed multiple self-report inventories, including the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support; and they provided information about the number of days they were depressed or their mental health was not good in the previous month. An additional model was run examining the relationships between the aforementioned variables and the number of days reported with mental health not good. While research shows that all three variables can affect depression in a college student population, the present study found that gender interacted with these measures. On the one hand, increased friendship support seemed to buffer males but especially females from depression. On the other hand, increased self-esteem buffered males from depression more than it buffered females. The additional model showed that self-esteem seems to work across genders to buffer college students from the experience of poor mental health days. Perhaps, when looking to intervene in the lives of the students, universities would be able to tailor interventions based on gender, so that they are able to foster increased friendship support for females and increase self-esteem for males, thereby reducing depression's impact on students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stress can affect anyone regardless of age, sex, creed, or race. It can rear its head anywhere and anytime, and it has likely been a fact of life since prehistoric days. While stress is obviously a concern of all, it has particular resonance among college students, from freshmen experiencing their first separation from home to seniors having to find that first job. In addition, students have to face other worries like time constraints, grades, and financial woes. Stress also can afflict an entire group, as witnessed by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. With stress such an indisputable part of life, it is of critical importance for individuals to learn to cope with it. This book is geared towards college courses in stress management, which have been found to reduce the symptoms of stress and raise self-esteem among students. College students will find it especially helpful to learn how to cope with stress at a young age, so as to be ready to face life in "the real world." Throughout the book are helpful and varied techniques for dealing with stress, along with "principles of living" that most people can use in daily life. Examples of these principles include continuous self-evaluation, talking things over, recognising one's accomplishments, and taking things less seriously. Given the need to face and adapt to stressful situations throughout life, the education offered by this book is informative, insightful, and practical for everyday use.

Book excerpt: College and university administrators have been interested in investigating students' satisfaction with college life experience. However, research findings regarding the correlates and determinants of students' satisfaction with college have been mixed and limited. Further, students' affective states and several aspects of their personality characteristics have not been examined in relation to satisfaction with college. The primary purposes of the study were to (1) examine whether depression, self-esteem, attributional style, gender, grade point average and year in college are significantly related to satisfaction, (2) which of these variables or their combinations most significantly contribute to satisfaction and (3) what are the magnitudes of the relationships of depression, self-esteem, attributional style gender, year in college and grade point average to satisfaction. A total of 156 college students responded to four different measures: College Descriptive Index, Beck Depression Inventory Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Attributional Style Questionnaire. The data were analyzed using Pearson Correlation, multiple regression and discriminate analysis. The main findings indicated that depression correlated negatively with student satisfaction, whereas self-esteem and GPA correlated positively with student satisfaction. The overall conclusions are that a satisfied student is likely to be nondepressed with high self-esteem and high GPA. Implications of the findings are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rich line of CBT research has established support for the use of cognitive therapy techniques (e.g., restructuring) for treating depression and low self-esteem. Cognitive defusion, a component of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, attempts to alter the context and function of thoughts without targeting thought content or frequency. The current study examined the efficacy of cognitive defusion against a wait-list control for improving self-esteem. Random assignment of twenty-two college students reporting low self-esteem and general distress showed that three sessions of cognitive defusion improves self-esteem, depressive symptoms, general distress, negative thinking, and experiential avoidance. Furthermore, the present study extended the work of Clore and Gaynor (2006, 2007) by providing modest comparison data of cognitive defusion vs. thought record training, fluency training, and supportive therapy. Overall, the data suggest that cognitive defusion may be an active process of ACT and is better than no treatment in increasing self-esteem.

Book excerpt: Traditional models of development highlight the importance of separation and individuation processes and value autonomy and independence as developmental goals. In contrast, the Relational Theory of Development suggests that human development occurs through being engaged in mutually empathic relationships, and maturity is marked by the ability to engage in complex, growth promoting relationships. In this study, one hundred and eighty three college women and one hundred and ten college men explored the extent to which adolescents and young adults engage in mutually empathic relationships, with whom, and the association between such relationships and psychological outcomes. Participants completed measures of mutual empathy, depression, anxiety and self-esteem. Paired-samples t tests and one-way analyses of variance (ANOVA) revealed significant differences in degree of mutual empathy with various relational partners, with women reporting higher mutual empathy in all relationships except with mother. Stepwise regressions indicated that for women, outcome measures were predicted by mutual empathy with mother and opposite sex friend or partner; for men, outcome measures were predicted by mutual empathy with father and same sex friend or partner. Results are consistent with the relational theory of development as applied to women, as well as with its application to adolescents and men. Clinical implications of these findings are considered.

For instance, rumination has been found to elevate, perpetuate and exacerbate depressed mood, predict future episodes of depression, and delay recovery during cognitive therapy. Cognitive therapy is one of the most effective treatments for depression. However, depressive relapse and recurrence following cognitive therapy continue to be a significant problem. An understanding of the psychological processes which contribute to relapse and recurrence may guide the development of more effective interventions. This is a major contribution to the study and treatment of depression which reviews a large body of research on rumination and cognitive processes, in depression and related disorders, with a focus on the implications of this knowledge for treatment and clinical management of these disorders. * First book on rumination in depressive and emotional disorders * Contributors are the leaders in the field * First editor is a rising researcher and clinician with specialist interest in depression, and second editor is world renowned for his work on cognitive therapy of emotional disorders
