Download or read book Social Indicators of Well-Being written by Frank M. Andrews and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study about perceptions of well-being. Its purpose is to investigate how these perceptions are organized in the minds of different groups of American adults, to find valid and efficient ways of measuring these percep tions, to suggest ways these measurement methods could be implemented to yield a series of social indicators, and to provide some initial readings on these indicators; i.e., some information about the levels of well-being perceived by Americans. The findings are based on data from more than five thousand Americans and include results from four separate representative samplings of the American population. One of the ways our research is unusual is that it includes a major methodological component. Typical surveys involve a modest effort at instru ment development, the application of the instrument to a group of respondents, and an analysis of the resulting data that mainly describes the people studied. Our work, however, was implemented in a series of sequential cycles, each of which consisted of conceptual development, instrument design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Ideas and findings generated in prior cycles affected the design of subsequent cycles.
Book Synopsis Cognitive Rehabilitation in Old Age by : Robert D. Hill
Download or read book Cognitive Rehabilitation in Old Age written by Robert D. Hill and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000-04-13 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cognitive deficits are part of the normal aging process and are exacerbated by various diseases that affect adults in old age, such as dementia, depression, and stroke. A significant scientific and social effort has been expended to evaluate whether cognitive deficits can be remedied through systematic interventions. The editors, as well as the chapter authors, represent a variety of viewpoints that span theory as well as practice. Overall, they aim to address concepts in cognitive rehabilitation that are useful in intervention research -- research which examines problems and issues in normal and pathological aging -- and focusing on the application of cognitive training strategies in natural settings. Thus, the book is grounded in contemporary theory in cognitive aging and is applicable to both the practicing clinician as well as the researcher. It is organized into four sections. The first highlights prominent theoretical principles; the second looks at cognitive rehabilitation strategies in normal aging; the third examines the interplay between lifestyle patterns and cognitive function through applying a broad definition of lifestyle choices; and the fourth focuses on rehabilitation strategies that address issues in pathological (or diseased) aging.

Book Synopsis Cognitive Neurorehabilitation by : Donald T. Stuss
Download or read book Cognitive Neurorehabilitation written by Donald T. Stuss and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-10-07 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first truly comprehensive survey of cognitive rehabilitation, spanning the spectrum from basic science to functional outcome. The international team of expert authors provide a critical review of theoretical and methodological issues relating to specific rehabilitation procedures and also to programme organization and management. The book is based on the twin premises that basic science is the foundation of rehabilitation and that successful outcome is dependent on the specificity of the rehabilitation. In demonstrating this, the book goes beyond cognitive rehabilitation treatments to cover biological, psychological, social and historical factors such as course of recovery, mood and motivation, family environment, education and age. With its emphasis on scientific principles, multidisciplinary practice, and functional outcome, this book will serve as an essential resource for all scientists and clinicians concerned with cognitive deficits secondary to altered brain functioning, and particularly to psychologists, neurologists, psychiatrists, occupational therapists and physical therapists.

Book Synopsis Rehabilitation Interventions for the Institutionalized Elderly by : Ellen D Taira
Download or read book Rehabilitation Interventions for the Institutionalized Elderly written by Ellen D Taira and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gerontology professionals offer suggestions to enrich the quality of rehabilitation services offered to the institutionalized elderly. This exciting volume examines up-to-the-minute ideas--some that would have been unlikely even a few years ago--that focus exclusively on rehabilitation services for the institutionalized elderly. Despite the strong move toward more community health services in the last decade, the essential role of the nursing home in the long term care continuum is continuing to expand. Perspectives on the response of elderly persons to therapeutic interventions are addressed--including the positive effects of such techniques as touch in therapy, group psychotherapy, and verbal and activity interventions. A significant exploration of the use of technological applications to promote independent living adds a new dimension to the use of technology in the field of gerontology--often a mixed blessing to chronically ill persons.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Pain and Aging by : David I. Mostofsky
Download or read book Handbook of Pain and Aging written by David I. Mostofsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From time to time, professional journals and edited volumes devote some of their pages to considerations of pain and aging as they occur among the aged in different cultures and populations. One starts from several reasonable assumptions, among them that aging per se is not a disease process, yet the risk and frequency of disease processes increase with ongoing years. The physical body's functioning and ability to restore all forms of damage and insult slow down, the immune system becomes compromised, and the slow-growing pathologies reach their critical mass in the later years. The psychological body also becomes weaker, with unfulfilled promises and expectations, and with tragedies that visit individuals and families, and the prospect that whatever worlds remain to be conquered will most certainly not be met with success in the rapidly passing days and years that can only culminate in death. Despair and depression coupled with infirmity and sensory and! or motor inefficiency aggravate both the threshold and the tolerance for discomfort and synergistically collaborate to perpetuate a vicious cycle in which the one may mask the other. Although the clinician is armed with the latest advances in medicine and phar macology, significant improvement continues to elude her or him. The geriatric specialist, all too familiar with such realities, usually can offer little else than a hortative to "learn to live with it," but the powers and effectiveness of learning itself have declined.
