Book excerpt: The present research explored the influences of self-efficacy, delinquency, and academic aspirations on the academic achievement of 935 high school students from ten high schools in two Australian capital cities (Brisbane and Perth). It was predicted that while academic and social self-efficacy and academic aspirations would have a positive impact on the academic achievement of high school students, self-regulatory efficacy and delinquency would have a negative impact. More specifically, we tested three competing models: the hypothesized mediated model of the mediational effects of academic aspirations and delinquency from academic, social and self-regulatory self-efficacy to academic achievement; a partially mediated model in which the direct effects of academic, social and self-regulatory self-efficacy on academic achievement were tested as well as the mediational effects of aspirations and delinquency; and a non-mediated model where direct paths from academic, social and self-regulatory self-efficacy to academic achievement were tested. Participants were administered the Children's Self-Efficacy Scale (Bandura, 1990); the Adapted Self-Report Delinquency Scale (Revised) (Carroll, Durkin, Houghton, & Hattie, 1996), and the Children's Academic Aspirations Scale (Bandura, 1996). For academic achievement, teachers provided midyear scores for each student in English. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to establish and define the relationships between the constructs and the specific factors that comprised these variables and to test the three alternative models. Of the three models, the partially mediated model showed the best fit to the data, although age and socio-economic status (SES) were not significantly related to delinquency, and age and academic aspirations were not significantly related to academic achievement. Academic self-efficacy and academic achievement were strongly related suggesting a direct causal relationship between these two constructs.

Book excerpt: The study examines the influence of parental influence and career-related variables on academic achievement being one of the fundamental factors in educational and career development process that paves way to the translation of career choice, interest and goals into action directly and indirectly through the mediation of academic self-efficacy and educational aspiration. The study was based on the theoretical foundation of Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) and Donald Super theory of career development. The study used a valid sample of 502 drawn through stratified random sampling technique from 28 randomly selected secondary schools in three metropolitan educational zones. Data was collected using a questionnaire that measured seven constructs. However, data collected was analyzed using SPSS version 20 and Amos Software version 18. Path analysis was employed in analysing the data and findings reveal that parental education and parental academic motivation as component of parental influence significantly and positively affect academic self-efficacy while all parental education and parental involvement significantly and positively influence educational aspiration. On the other hand, only vocational outcome expectation as a component of career-related component variables significantly and positively influenced academic self-efficacy. However, no significant direct relationships between academic self-efficacy, educational aspiration and academic achievement were found. Moreover, no mediation effect of academic self-efficacy and educational aspiration in the relationship between parental influence, career-related variables and academic achievement. Theoretically, the findings of the study support the preposition of SCCT involving strong correlation between vocational outcome expectation and self-efficacy. The study provides a ground for new policy initiatives to connect guidance with major public policy to enhance educational efficiency and outcome for young people. The study recommends that school administrators' should improve parental involvement by bridging the gap between home and school and ensure that functional guidance and counselling services are provided to cater for the students' educational, career and personal needs.

The selected combination of factors was hypothesized to be unique in their ability to explain greater proportions of variance in academic achievement in adolescents. A specific model through an ecological framework was proposed. Participants included 379 high school students (176 males, 193 females) from a midwestern, suburban high school that enrolls approximately 1,500 students. A variety of variables emerged as significant predictors of academic achievement, with social emotional learning, selfefficacy, socio-economic status, parental involvement, peer support, and teacher support all explaining significant proportions of variance in achievement, and some to stronger degrees than others. This lends support to the notion that learning is shaped by a myriad ecological factors. These findings are discussed with regard to their usefulness in understanding ways in which to target each of the investigated variables to ultimately increase academic achievement in adolescents.

Book excerpt: This quantitative study investigated the predictive role of the Big Five personality traits on academic achievement and its mediation by self-efficacy in self-regulated learning and academic motivation within the sample of gifted students (N = 161). The ACT or ACT Explore scores were used as a measure of academic achievement. The first question asked about the relationships between the Big Five personality traits and all other measured variables. Agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness were found to have significant associations with the ACT/ACT Explore composite and subtest scores. The second research question asked if personality, motivation, and self-regulatory efficacy differed by grade and gender. The results revealed that middle school students scored significantly higher than high school students on extraversion. Female students scored higher on neuroticism and lower on extraversion compared to their male counterparts. In addition, female students had more controlled type of motivation than male students. The third question was about the interplay between personality traits, self-regulatory efficacy, academic motivation, and academic achievement. Self-regulatory efficacy, controlled motivation, and autonomous motivation were hypothesized to serve as mediators in the relationships between personality traits and academic achievement. Of the Big Five traits, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and openness were presented in the path analysis model. All three personality traits had direct effects on academic achievement. The indirect effects of these traits through specific pathways were estimated. The present study contributes to the research field by revealing important relationships between specific constructs that have been suggested by personality, social cognitive, and self-determination theories. Academic motivation and self-regulatory efficacy established as important mediators of the association between Big Five personality traits and academic achievement. These findings suggest that educators should be aware of their students' different personality traits. Educators play an important role in promoting self-regulated learning (Peeters et al., 2014) and fostering intrinsic motivation and task engagement (Reeve, 2002). They should be trained to enhance students' efficacy by developing their self-regulatory skills through internalization of effective strategies for learning. In addition, teachers should learn how to be more autonomy supportive with students. Educational leaders have a key responsibility to make these happen effectively. They should give proactive attention to these requirements and ensure that their teachers are well-equipped to integrate self-regulatory and motivational resources into the school curriculum.

Therefore, all efforts ought to be made towards encouraging this achievement. School success however, is a complex phenomenon shaped by a wide variety of factors and many Latino adolescents are missing opportunities to develop their full potential in the United States educational system. The goal of this project was to present a perspective on students' relationship to their academic outcomes that emphasizes the role of the mental health and self-efficacy of Latino youth towards their learning and academic success. The present study examined the relationship between students' broad mental health risk, general self-efficacy, and achievement outcomes. The district in which this study was conducted has one of the lowest graduation rates in the state of New Jersey (under 60%) and reading and math testing scores ranking below the 15th percentile. The high school was comprised of 1397 students, grades 9 through 12 of whom 485 met criteria for further analysis by virtue of being Latino, completing the Pediatric Symptom Checklist (PSC) and the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE) as well as meeting other demographic criteria. The results of this study indicated that mental health risk's impact on academic achievement outcomes are mediated by perceived general self-efficacy. This finding appears most significantly for the relationship between internalizing symptoms and final Language Arts grade as well as GPA. Specifically, the current study found that when an adolescent's self-reported internalizing symptoms go up by 1, the indirect, mediated effect by self-efficacy is that final Language Arts grade goes down by .16 and GPA goes down by .01. Broadly, the effect sizes reflecting these findings are small, but add to the field suggesting that academic self-efficacy is a predictor of school success for Latino students. The findings here offer an important potential area for intervention that can and ought to be explored in furtherance of the goal of encouraging school achievement in at-risk populations.

Hence, psychological stability turns out to be an important predictor of high academic achievement. Understanding aspects of the self, particularly of students who are low achievers is critical, due to the large number of children who are left behind and the social ramifications that result from poor education. The potential for self-control to predict academic achievement in college students is particularly important because few good predictors of academic achievement in college students exist and college retention and graduation rates are decreasing. The purpose of the present study was to identify factors that predict self-control and GPA in college students. Participants included 163 undergraduate students at the University of Florida who completed take-home self-report questionnaires. A recursive path analysis was used to test a model relating students' role models, possible selves, perceived self-efficacy, perceived self-control skills, and GPA. Partial support for the model was found, as total role models predicted the number of balanced possible selves; the number of balanced possible selves predicted Delay of Gratification; perceived self-efficacy predicted perceived self-control; and Planful Thinking predicted GPA. These results are consistent with social cognitive theory, as role models influenced students' possible selves, which in turn influenced students' self-control skills and academic achievement. However, the lack of relationships among some of the variables indicates that more research is needed to examine the relationships among role models, possible selves, and self-control. In particular, researchers should use domain-specific measures of academic possible selves and academic self-control to predict students' academic achievement.

Participants in this study were ninth to twelfth grade high school students from a charter school that catered to students from urban and suburban backgrounds (N = 312). Students were from various socioeconomic backgrounds but primarily of African American and Latino descent. The students were asked to complete several surveys assessing their demographics and the variables grouped by their ecological contexts as follows: Intrapersonal Variables (1) Academic Self-efficacy; (2) Academic Engagement; (3) Intrinsic Value for Learning; (4) Goal-oriented self-regulation; Microsystem Variables: (1) Parents Pro-Educational Attitudes, (2) Peers Academic Orientation, (3) School Climate, (4) Neighborhood Structure and the Mesosystem Variable (1) Parent-teacher/ parent-school communication. Academic Risk Behaviors were also assessed. The data analysis approach was consistent with Ecological Systems Theory. Results of the current study suggest that the intrapersonal factors of self-efficacy and academic engagement are most predictive of academic achievement, while the microsystem variable of parental pro-educational attitudes towards education also significantly predicted academic achievement. A moderation analysis revealed that when schools provide meaningful opportunities for participation for students, students tended to generally have higher academic engagement, while living in a family with higher SES boosted that relationship. All analyses were controlled for differences in SES, ethnicity, and grade. One unexpected finding was that the differences among variables existed by grade. Meaning and significance of results were discussed.

The purpose of this study is to examine if ASE and approach to learning (DA, SA) predict AAA and HAA of adolescents and if AAA is effective to the ASE. The sample consisted of 457 adolescents (268 girls and 189 boys). We used Morgan-Jinks Student Efficacy Scale. We measured academic achievement by grade point average. Autonomous evaluation of academic achievement was measured by perceived self-evaluation of academic achievement. Approach to learning we measured with The Revised Study Process Questionnaire. Our assumption about the correlation of all variables monitored (only with exception of the surface approach to learning) was confirmed. We have identified that academic self-efficacy, similarly as the preferred approach to learning (deep or surface), constitute an important predictor of heteronomous evaluation of academic achievement, and also that HAA is a significant predictor of AAA, while AAA is an important predictor of ASE in the age cohort of adolescents.
