Book excerpt: Elementary third and fourth grade classrooms were found to be primarily structured in two configurations. Self-contained classrooms are structured with one teacher teaching all academic subjects to his or her students and departmentalized classrooms are structured with two teachers teaching a portion of the academic subjects to two classrooms. These structures were found to coexist in one large urban district with whole schools operating under the self-contained structure or departmentalized structure. A review of the literature found that proponents of each of these structures have existed in American schools for more than seventy years and support for each has been sustained. Utilizing ex post facto research methodology, this quantitative study gathered benchmark and state testing data in mathematics and science to identify patterns in achievement based on classroom structures. Data were analyzed utilizing factors of gender, ethnicity, and program participation in English as a second language (ESL), bilingual, and gifted and talented (GT) programs. It was found that students in fourth grade performed significantly better in departmentalized classrooms for mathematics, third grade bilingual students performed significantly better in departmentalized classrooms for mathematics, fourth grade female ESL and bilingual students performed significantly better in self-contained classrooms for mathematics, and fourth grade bilingual students performed significantly better on one science assessment in self-contained instructional settings.

Is there a best classroom structure in which students can be successful? Although there is research on the academic gains in the block schedule and in traditional departmentalized settings, both of which are common in secondary schools, there is little research on the effectiveness of a high school self-contained classroom. Rarely do "high school" and "self-contained classroom" appear together. Although the research on the effectiveness of self-contained classrooms is minimal, it is significant. One study done by McGrath and Rust (2002) of fifth and sixth graders in departmentalized and self-contained classrooms found that students in self-contained classrooms made significant gains on the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) in the total battery and language and science subtests. However there were no significant differences in the math, reading and social studies subtests (Catledge-Howard, Ward, Dilworth, & Mississippi State University, 2003; McGrath & Rust, 2002). According to Piirto and Kolloff, students who have been identified as gifted and are in self-contained settings, score higher in this environment than when they are not. Both report that it may be because students are able to be themselves without fear of the social implications associated with their giftedness (Piirto, 2004). (Contains 5 online resources.).

Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference between self-contained and departmentalized classroom organization on the Kentucky Core Content Test (KCCT) in reading and mathematics for students in fourth and fifth grade. A secondary purpose of this study was to consider how these organizational structures affect the KCCT scores in regard to gender, ethnicity, and socio-economic status of the students from which scores were obtained. The results of this study will provide necessary information to educational decision-makers. The review of literature, as presented in Chapter Two, indicates that few current empirical studies have been done in the area of school organization. This study will help fill the gap of research in the area of the impact on student achievement in self-contained and departmentalized school organization. The population for this project included fourth and fifth grade students from eight public elementary schools in one urban school district within the state of Kentucky. Within this district there were 88 elementary schools. The schools included in this study were selected by the researcher, because four offered a self-contained school organization and the other four offered a departmentalized school design. The data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), and through Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM). Analysis of the descriptive statistics showed the two groups (self-contained and departmentalized) of schools to be similar. Random effects ANOVA, intra-class correlation, and multiple regression were used to examine both student and classroom level data. The findings from the study showed that there was no effect of group (self-contained versus departmentalized) on the academic performance of the students in either reading or mathematics KCCT scale scores. The conclusions drawn by the researcher, based on the study results were that based on the population of the study, the choice of school organization (self-contained or departmentalized) had no significant effect on the academic achievement of fourth and fifth grade students on KCCT reading and mathematics scale scores.

Book excerpt: The present study investigated the effects of departmentalized and self-contained classroom structures on student achievement of fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students in Mississippi schools. Historical MCT2 proficiency level percentages were collected from the Mississippi Department of Education website for the following school years: 2009-2010, 2010-2011, 2011-2012, and 2012-2013. This data was used to calculate a revised Quality of Distribution Index (QDI-R) for each school included in the study. Using the QDI-R, differences were generated between school year (SY) 2009-2010 and SY 2010-2011; between SY 2010-2011 and SY 2011-2012; and between SY 2011-2012 and SY 2012-2013. This yielded three data points for measuring student achievement in the study. An email questionnaire was distributed to schools in order to determine which structure was being utilized in each school for each grade level. Follow up phone calls were made to those failing to respond to the email request. Once this information was collected, the population of the study included 247 schools serving fourth grade, 242 schools serving fifth grade, and 207 schools serving sixth grade. A one-way Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) was conducted for determining if a difference existed between the two structures for each grade level. Findings revealed no significant difference between structures in language arts for grades four, five, or six. There was also no evidence of a significant difference between structures for grade four and five mathematics. A significant difference was found between the two structures for grade six mathematics.
