This is the first book specifically about Agile Self-assessments. In this book, Ben Linders explains what self-assessments are and why you would do them, and explores how to do them using the Agile Self-assessment Game. He's also sharing experience stories from people who played the game. This book is based on his experience as a developer, tester, team leader, project manager, quality manager, process manager, consultant, coach, trainer, and adviser in Agile, Lean, Quality and Continuous Improvement. It takes a deep dive into self-assessments, viewing them from different perspectives and provides ideas, suggestions, practices, and experiences that will help you to do effective agile self-assessments with your teams. The book is aimed at Scrum masters, agile coaches, consultants leading agile transformations, developers and testers, project managers, line managers, and CxOs; basically for anyone who is looking for an effective way to help their agile teams improve and to increase the agility of their organization. Book excerpt: "Across the spectrum of self-assessment research, a topic of debate concerns the accuracy by which individuals can evaluate their own performance. While some research has found self-assessment to be an effective measure, the majority typically found it to be an under- or over-estimation of actual performance. Although the accuracy of self-assessment has seen skepticism, benefits have been well documented. The current review is the result of examination concerning self-assessment accuracy and utility. The literature was searched to evaluate the ability of trainees/job incumbents/students to accurately report their level of ability or performance. Upon examination of the self-assessment accuracy literature, problems arose concerning terminology and differential utilization of self-assessment. This review reports that self-assessment, as currently used, is generally inaccurate; but given appropriate consideration of the moderating variables and clarification of terminology, self-assessment accuracy could increase. The Army should utilize a continuum of self-assessment, considering domain and skill level as determinant factors. Self-grading could be useful for the introduction and training of new skills. Self-impression may be useful for assessing Soldiers' confidence, self-perception of personality or traits, and continuous performance appraisal. Implementation of the continuum has potential to improve training quality and skill retention throughout the Army."--DTIC.

Book excerpt: In Hansons Marathon Method, the coaches of the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project reveal the methods they've used to turn their runners into race winners, national champions, and Olympians. Hansons Marathon Method offers a radical overhaul of marathon training that promises to turn any runner into a true marathoner and help experienced marathoners set new personal bests. Hansons Marathon Method does away with mega-long runs and high-mileage weekends--two outdated traditions that make most runners miserable. Instead, runners using the Hansons method will gradually build up to the moderate-high mileage required for marathon success, spreading those miles more sensibly throughout the week. Running easy days mixed with precisely paced speed, strength, and tempo workouts, runners will steel their bodies and minds to run the hardest miles of the marathon. Both Beginner and Advanced training programs feature the unique Hansons 16-mile long run which, as part of the Hansons program, is ideal for preparing the body for the marathon. Humphrey explains how runners should set their goal race pace and shows how to customize the Hansons method to their own needs, like adding extra racing, running more miles, and handling training interruptions. Detailed nutrition and hydration chapters help runners pinpoint their personal energy and hydration needs so they know precisely how much to eat and drink during workouts, race week, race day, and for recovery. The Hansons approach to pacing and nutrition means marathoners will never hit the wall. Hansons Marathon Method lays out the smartest marathon training program available from one of the most accomplished running groups in the nation. Using this innovative approach, runners will mold real marathon muscles, train their body to never hit the wall, and prepare to run their fastest marathon.

Figure it out for yourself and invigorate your teaching on your own terms! This practical evidence-based guide promotes excellence in teaching and improved student learning through self-reflection and self-assessment of one’s teaching. Phyllis Blumberg starts by reviewing the current approaches to instructor evaluation and describes their inadequacies. She then presents a new model of assessing teaching that builds upon a broader base of evidence and sources of support. This new model leads to self-assessment rubrics, which are available for download, and the book will guide you in how to use them. The book includes case studies of completed critical reflection rubrics from a variety of disciplines, including the performing and visual arts and the hard sciences, to show how they can be used in different ways and how to explore the richness of the data you’ll uncover.

Book excerpt: In the foreword to Self-Assessment and Goal Setting, Heidi Andrade explains that ¿self-assessment is a key element in formative assessment because it involves students in thinking about the quality of their own work rather than relying on their teacher as the sole source of evaluative judgments.¿ Throughout this second book in the Knowing What Counts series, authors Kathleen Gregory, Caren Cameron, and Anne Davies describe ways for teachers to create more involved students by including them in the assessment of their own work. The first section in this book provides ten self-assessment activities for students and details how to: (1) introduce the purpose of the activities to students, (2) implement the activities, and (3) provide different opportunities for practice. The authors encourage the reader to adapt the examples they provide as needed to best fit their specific needs and circumstances. In the second section, the authors describe how to make goal setting a logical extension of self-assessment. Guidelines are provided for short-term and long-term goals. The third section contains common questions teachers may have about the concepts presented in the first two sections of the book as well as questions parents and students may bring to educators in response to the activities described in these sections. The authors respond to these questions in detail, giving educators the knowledge they need to properly implement these strategies and respond to others¿ concerns.
