Book excerpt: The true life story of a gunslinging, gambling moonshiner is recounted in this “cheerful, wild…rollicking biography” by the outlaw’s own nephew (Forward Reviews). Born to a Texas sharecropping family in 1904, Emmett Long soon fell in love with fast engines and fast living. An associate of legendary outlaws like Pretty Boy Floyd and Frank Nash, Emmett rose from poverty to infamy as a prodigious gambler, moonshiner, bank robber, and—on occasion—a killer of men. But he was not your average outlaw. From an early age, Emmett made his own rules—and he stuck to them, too. Instead of dying young in a blaze of guns and fury, he found Christianity, married a good woman, raised a family, and lived to a ripe age as a successful rancher. In a new twist to the classic Great Depression outlaw narrative, Asa Dunnington shares the life story of his uncle in Selectively Lawless.

Book Synopsis Liberalizing Lynching by : Daniel Kato
Download or read book Liberalizing Lynching written by Daniel Kato and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2016 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberalizing lynching: building a new racialized state' seeks to explain the seemingly paradoxical relationship between the American liberal regime and the illiberal act of lynching. Drawing on legal cases, congressional documents, presidential correspondence, and newspaper reports, Daniel Kato explores the federal government's pattern of non-intervention regarding lynchings of African Americans from the late nineteenth century through the 1960s. Although popular belief holds that the federal government was unable to address racial violence in the South, this book argues that the actions and decisions of the federal government from the 1870s through the 1960s reveal that federal inaction was not primarily a consequence of institutional or legal incapacities, but rather a decision that was supported and maintained by all three branches of the federal government. To cement his argument, Kato develops the theory of constitutional anarchy, which crystallizes the ways in which federal government had the capacity to intervene, yet relinquished its responsibility while nonetheless maintaining authority.

Book Synopsis How German Parties Select Candidates of Immigrant Origin by : Sara Ceyhan
Download or read book How German Parties Select Candidates of Immigrant Origin written by Sara Ceyhan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-31 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the threshold candidates of immigrant background need to overcome to run for legislative office. Understanding whether political parties are able to adapt their selection criteria helps to assess their ability to respond to the underrepresentation of citizens of immigrant origin in parliament. Although Germany’s ethnic diversity is on a steady rise, citizens of immigrant origin remain descriptively underrepresented. Despite the pivotal role the intra-party candidate selection plays in shaping who runs for election, the question of how candidates of immigrant background fare in political parties’ candidate selection in comparison to native-born candidates remained a blind spot of research. Therefore, the author presents in-depth empirical evidence on the selection of candidates of immigrant background in German political parties. The book addresses scholars of political science interested in electoral studies as well as policy-makers and party officials interested in a balanced representation of their political representatives.
