Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Speeches and Writings of Edmund Burke "Id dice, eum qui sit orator, virum bonum esse oportere. In omnibus quae dicit tanta auctoritas inest, ut dissentire pudeat; nec advocati studium, sed testis aut judicis afferat fidem." - Quintilianus. "Democracy is the most monstrous of all governments, because it is impossible at once to act and control; and, consequently, the Sovereign Power is then left without any restraint whatever. That form of government is the best which places the efficient direction in the hands of the aristocracy, subjecting them in its exercise to the control of the people at large." - Sir James Mackintosh. The intellectual homage of more than half a century has assigned to Edmund Burke a lofty pre-eminence in the aristocracy of mind, and we may justly assume succeeding ages will confirm the judgment which the Past has thus pronounced. His biographical history is so popularly known, that it is almost superfluous to record it in this brief introduction. It may, however, be summed up in a few sentences. He was born at Dublin in 1730. His father was an attorney in extensive practice, and his mother's maiden name was Nogle, whose family was respectable, and resided near Castletown, Roche, where Burke himself received five years of boyish education under the guidance of a rustic schoolmaster. He was entered at Trinity College. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forgotten Truths: Selections From the Speeches and Writings of the Right Hon. Edmund Burke; With Biographical Sketch The object of this book is to pave the way to a more extended study of the works of Edmund 'burke, and the compiler has no desire to claim for it anything in the nature of a complete exposition of the subject. He has endeavoured to place before the reader such passages from Burke's writings and speeches as appear to him to give a clear idea of the political and economic principles which the great statesman taught. Burke's compositions - both literary and oratorical - are, how ever, such models of symmetrical construction, that it is extremely difficult to give detached passages without destroying the effect pro duced by the harmonious whole nevertheless, the compiler hopes that he has to some extent achieved his purpose. At all events, the present time seems to him a fitting one for making the attempt. The principles which Burke advocated, and which were afterwards embodied in the emancipating legislation of the Liberal party during two generations, have fallen into sad discredit and oblivion. We want a Burke to remind us that the truths he enunciated were not for an age, but for all time; and since the present generation of statesmen appears to have discarded his precepts, we cannot do better than turn for inspiration to the words of the Master himself. The year 1897 saw the centenary of Edmund Burke's death, and the compiler of this book offers it as a humble tribute to his memory. Edmund Burke: Illustrated in a Series of Extracts From His Writings and Speeches; With a Summary of His Life The present volume proposes to relieve this embar rassment by giving, under a systematic arrangement, the finer part of the works of Burke The plan adopted is a classification into chapters of the dif ferent subjects which principally occupied the great statesman's attention; and a formation under each chapter, of a connected series of extracts the most remarkable for eloquence, argument, or style. The whole, with the biographical summary annexed, dis plays a concise, and, it is submitted, a clear view of what was the luminous course of Burke's action and thought - what were his parliamentary and literary powers. Book excerpt: The Works of the Right Honourable Edmund Burke Volume The Second: Large Print By Edmund Burke The following speech has been much the subject of conversation, and the desire of having it printed was last summer very general. The means of gratifying the public curiosity were obligingly furnished from the notes of some gentlemen, members of the last Parliament. This piece has been for some months ready for the press. But a delicacy, possibly over-scrupulous, has delayed the publication to this time. The friends of administration have been used to attribute a great deal of the opposition to their measures in America to the writings published in England. The editor of this speech kept it back, until all the measures of government have had their full operation, and can be no longer affected, if ever they could have been affected, by any publication. Most readers will recollect the uncommon pains taken at the beginning of the last session of the last Parliament, and indeed during the whole course of it, to asperse the characters and decry the measures of those who were supposed to be friends to America, in order to weaken the effect of their opposition to the acts of rigor then preparing against the colonies. The speech contains a full refutation of the charges against that party with which Mr. Burke has all along acted. In doing this, he has taken a review of the effects of all the schemes which have been successively adopted in the government of the plantations. The subject is interesting; the matters of information various and important; and the publication at this time, the editor hopes, will not be thought unseasonable. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. Book excerpt: This fourth volume in the Writings and Speeches of Edmund Burke series is also the last of the three Party and Parliament volumes, which follow Edmund Burke through from the opening of a newly elected Parliament which assembled on 31 October 1780 to his retirement from the Commons in 1794. This volume addresses Burke's views on the authority of Parliament over the British provinces in India, and his concerns about the implications of the French Revolution for British politics. He also expresses his views on issues that had always greatly interested him, such as the reform of criminal law, the confinement of debtors, and the abolition of what he regarded as outmoded economic regulations. The texts for the items, which have appeared in previous editions of Burke's Works, have been reconstructed, largely by the use of manuscripts, and many of the shorter speeches appear here in print for the first time.
