Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From the Spectator of Addison and Steele Some years ago, I picked up, from among some books thrown aside, an old copy of The Spectator, with leaves torn and cover half off, evidently too dilapidated to remain in the library. Upon looking at the preface, I was attracted by what was said to be the object of the authors, namely: To correct the vices, ridicule the follies, and dissi pate the ignorance, which too generally prevailed at the commencement of the Eighteenth Century. This interest led me to read all the essays, and I found that, by enlivening morality with wit and tempering wit with morality, this object was attained in an eminent degree. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mind of the Spectator Under the Editorship of Addison and Steele IT is restful and Wholesome for us of this hurrying age occasionally to contemplate a quieter world. And there is no pleasanter way of doing so than through the eyes of the Spectator. Those were the days when even journalism was leisurely. It was Addison's earnest ambition to teach as well as to divert, to clear away encumbering hatreds and follies, and to build up public opinion on foundations of sober judgment and clear sense of right and wrong. There are some whose eagerness in this perennial task makes them didactic, pompous, impatient. But Addison is among those who can wait. He would rather wear down than tear down ignorance, passion and prejudice. He will take time to look well into men's minds before he takes side against them. He trusts men to see their own faces in the honest mirror he holds up to them, and he would rather set them laughing at themselves than condemning each other. So he gives them these homoeopathic doses of good sense, good taste and good-humoured morality. And when. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spectator: Essays I.-L Two months after the cessation of the Tatler, this second-born of our Essayists was ushered into the world; but under auspices greatly superior to its predecessor's. Large materials had been collected in that short interval, both by Steele and Addison; their plan, hitherto undefined and desultory, was now ripened and methodized; and they appeared in the ring for this new race of glory with many advantages that experience had superadded, and with that confidence in their own resources, which is always the surest herald of success. The first paper is by Addison, and very finely conceived. It introduces the Spectator to his readers as a silent and speculative personage - a sort of mute Argus in society, whom nothing is likely to escape - and who has formed a resolution, in his unconquerable antipathy to speech, 'to print himself out, if possible, before he die.' The account of the Spectator's Club, in the second paper, is by Steele; and it contains the outline of a portrait which Addison afterwards adopted to himself, and filled up with incomparable felicity. Of this portrait, we shall take occasion presently to speak more at large. In the mean time, let it be remarked, that no two persons were ever more formed to co-operate in a literary undertaking, than were Steele and Addison. It is true, their great talents in some respects were totally dissimilar; but from this dissimilitude only resulted a greater diversity of beauties, that matchless whole of the Spectator, which to this day, as a model for periodical writing, remains unrivalled. Book excerpt: The De Coverley Papers From 'The Spectator' by Joseph Addison No character in our literature, not even Mr. Pickwick, has more endeared himself to successive generations of readers than Addison's Sir Roger de Coverley: there are many figures in drama and fiction of whom we feel that they are in a way personal friends of our own, that once introduced to us they remain a permanent part of our little world. It is the abiding glory of Dickens, it is one of Shakespeare's abiding glories, to have created many such: but we look to find these characters in the novel or the play We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spectator: A New Edition, Reproducing the Original d104, Both as First Issued and as Corrected by Its Authors; With Introduction, Notes, and Index With that strong regard for the drama which cannot well be wanting to the man who has an artist's vivid sense of life, Steele never withdrew his good will from the players, never neglected to praise a good play, and I may add, took every fair occasion of suggest ing to the town the subtlety of Shakespeare s genius. But he now ceased to write comedies until towards the close of his life he produced with a remarkable success his other play, the Conscious Lovers. And of that, by the way, Fielding made his Parson Adams say that Cato and the Conscious Lovers were the only plays he ever heard of, fit for a Chris tian to read, 'and, I must own, in the latter there are some things almost solemn enough for a sermon.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selections From Papers Contributed to the Spectator: Edited With Introd, and Notes by Thomas Arnold Addison and Steele were the chief contributors, and in nearly equal proportions, to the Spectator. Including the eighty\ numbers of the eighth volume of the resuscitated Spectator, the publication consisted of 63 5 papers. Of these, according tq the computation of Dr. Drake, 274 were from the pen of Addison, and 240 from that of Steele. Eustace Budgell wrote 37, John Hughes 11, and Henry Grove four papers. Two or three, or even four, papers are supposed to be by Pope, but they cannot all be identified with certainty. More than a score of other writers are credited with the composition of one or two papers, or parts of papers. Fifty-three papers remain, for which all the researches of the last century editors were unable to find authors. On all these matters full information may be found in Dr. Drake's Euayr, from which, and from other sources, we extract some account of the ascertained contributors, which those who do not care for biographical details may skip. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir Roger De Coverley and the Spectator's Club The question which is perplexing the anxious, over burdened man Oi the nineteenth century, Is life worth living might, with some propriety, have been asked in the eighteenth of the social dawdler whose days were rounds of sensual pleasures. Thackeray says, I 'have calculated the manner in which statesmen and persons Of condition passed their time and what with drinking and dining, and supping and cards, wonder how they got through with their business at all. The fine gentleman rose late, and sauntered in the Mall the fashionable promenade which we are I told was always full of idlers, but especially so morn ing and evening when their Majesties often walked with the royal family. After his walk the society man, dressed elaborately and in his periwig, cocked hat, skirt-coat wired to make it stick out, ruffled linen, black silk hose, square-toed shoes, and buckles, gaily betook himself to the coffee-house or chocolate house. Here he lounged, and over the steaming cup discussed the latest news from abroad, from Parlia ment, from society. As there were few conveniences in the homes for entertaining, it was the custom to dine with-a friend or two at the tavern, where hilarity prevailed, and drunkenness was a trifling incident, attaching no Shame or disgrace to the Offender. Din ner over, the coffee-house again, or possibly the club, occupied the attention, and the theatre or gaming table finished the day for this man of quality who perhaps had no uneasy consciousness Of time wasted. Compare a charming paper by Goldsmith on The Man in Black (citizen of the World, no. XX. One of the series of essays in which Addison called the attention Of his age to the greatness of Paradise Lost. Literary criticism, it must be remembered, was mainly (in spite of noble exceptions, such as Dryden's Prefaces) of the most pedantic sort: works of art were judged by their conformity to rules framed in accordance with a narrow and unintelligent study of the ancient critics. Addison's judgments, though some may now seem Obvious and others wrong, were in advance of his time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
