Book excerpt: From bestselling poet Daniel Ladinsky, a rich collection that brings the great Sufi poet Hafiz to Western readers To Persians, the poems of Hafiz are not “classical literature” from a remote past but cherished wisdom from a dear and intimate friend that continues to be quoted in daily life. With uncanny insight, Hafiz captures the many forms and stages of love. His poetry outlines the stages of the mystic's “path of love”—a journey in which love dissolves personal boundaries and limitations to join larger processes of growth and transformation. With this stunning collection, Ladinsky has succeeded brilliantly in capturing the essence of one of Islam’s greatest poetic and spiritual voices. “If you haven’t yet had the delight of dining with Daniel Ladinsky’s sweet, playful renderings of the musings of the great saints, I Heard God Laughing is a perfect appetizer. . . . This newly released edition of his first playful foray into Hafiz’s divinely inspired poetry is essential reading. . . . Ladinsky is a master who will be remembered for finally bringing Hafiz alive in the West.” —Alexandra Marks, The Christian Science Monitor

Book excerpt: Sacred poetry from twelve mystics and saints, rendered brilliantly by Daniel Ladinsky, beloved interpreter of verses by the fourteenth-century Persian poet Hafiz One of 6 Books Oprah Loves to Give as Gifts During the Holidays “All kinds of beautiful poetry.” –Hoda Kotb In this luminous collection, Daniel Ladinsky—best known for his bestselling interpretations of the great Sufi poet Hafiz—brings together the timeless work of twelve of the world’s finest spiritual writers, six from the East and six from the West. Once again, Ladinsky reveals his talent for creating profound and playful renditions of classic poems for a modern audience. Rumi’s joyous, ecstatic love poems; St. Francis’s loving observations of nature through the eyes of Catholicism; Kabir’s wild, freeing humor that synthesizes Hindu, Muslim, and Christian beliefs; St. Teresa’s sensual verse; and the mystical, healing words of Sufi poet Hafiz—these along with inspiring works by Rabia, Meister Eckhart, St. Thomas Aquinas, Mira, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, and Tukaram are all “love poems by God” from writers considered “conduits of the divine.” Together, they form a spiritual treasure to cherish always.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rubaiyat of Hafiz Hafiz never submitted to any strict monastic rule, and when he assumed the dervish habit he took care to temper his orthodoxy with the free doctrines learnt from his teacher. About four miles from Shiraz there is a place called pir-e-sabz, Green Pir, situated on a hill called Baba Kohi. It was said that if any one passed forty nights in that place without sleep he would achieve the gift of composing poems. Hafiz determined to go through the discipline. He used to pass nights there, while at daytime he used to take rest. About the same time he fell violently in love with a damsel named Shakh-e Nabat (branch Of Candy), who paid little heed to the suit Of Hafiz; but on the fortieth day she called him in and said that she preferred a man of genius to a prince. Like the enchantress in the Isle Of Bliss, she would have kept him from completing the course; but Hafiz remem bered his vow and returned to pir-e-sabz. At the dawn of the day he fell into a trance, wherein he saw Khwaja Khizar, the most learned of the Prophets, revealing himself to him. He blessed him with the gift of eloquence and poetry. On recovering his consciousness he greeted his beloved with enchanting eloquence and verses. Thus, it is said, Hafiz became a poet. Download or read book Drunk on the Wine of the Beloved written by Hafiz and published by Shambhala Publications. This book was released on 2001-08-14 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Persian Sufi poet Hafiz (1326–1390) is a towering figure in Islamic literature—and in spiritual attainment as well. Known for his profound mystical wisdom combined with a sublime sensuousness, Hafiz was the supreme master of a poetic form known as the ghazal (pronounced "guzzle"), an ode or song consisting of rhymed couplets celebrating divine love. In this selection of his poems, wine and the intoxication it brings are the image that expresses this love in all its joyful abandon, painful longing, bewilderment, and surrender. Through ninety-five free-verse renditions, we gain entry into the mystical world of Hafiz's Winehouse, with its happy minstrels, its bewitching Winebringer, and its companions in drunken longing whose hearts cry out, "More wine!" Thomas Rain Crowe brings a new dimension to our growing appreciation of Hafiz and his wise drunkard's advice to the seekers of God: In this world of illusion, take nothing other than this cup of wine; In this playhouse, don't play any games but love.
