Book excerpt: Twenty-seven commercially available petrochemical-based geotechnical fabrics and one fiberglass fabric were tested and evaluated for suitability as reinforcement in an embankment test section to be constructed on soft foundation at Pinto Pass, Mobile Harbor, Alabama by the U.S. Army Engineer District, Mobile. Both woven and nonwoven fabrics were evaluated. All fabrics were subjected to initial testing in uniaxial tension and fabrics meeting or exceeding project sponsor-established strength criteria were subjected to additional testing for determination of creep behavior, soil-fabric frictional resistance, and effects of immersion and water absorption on developed tensile strength. The effects of specimen width and testing strain rate on uniaxial tension test results were also investigated. Four woven geotechnical fabrics plus the woven fiberglass fabric were found to meet or exceed required tensile strength criteria: Nicolon 66475, Nicolon 66186, Polyfilter-X, Advanced Type I, and Bay Mills 196-380-000 (fiberglass). Both Nicolon materials were found to have minimal creep tendency and strength loss after soaking. Bay Mills 196-380-000 had zero creep tendency and was not tested for soaking strength loss. Minimum soil-fabric frictional resistance for all five fabrics approximated soil alone behavior for a loose relative density condition. All five fabrics were recommended for consideration by the research sponsor for use as embankment reinforcement in test section construction. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of polymeric materials in the form of geosynthetics has brought major changes to the area of Civil Engineering. Increasing interest in these materials and their use has resulted in significant advances in their practical applications in the last few decades. Following this progress, geosynthetics have become a common and favoured construction component in present-day geotechnical engineering. A wide range of compositions is now used, with properties tailored to conditions required for application. Fundamentals of Geosynthetic Engineering provides an overview of the basic concepts of this fascinating and innovative subject area in a logical and illustrative way. This book guides the reader from basic description, manufacturing and material properties of the geosynthetics to their selection process and the major applications. It treats practical analysis and design concepts and provides guidelines for application. In addition, the quality control, field performance and monitoring of applied geosynthetics are discussed, and some aspects of costs analysis are described. The text is supported by examples, multiple choice and numerical questions with answers provided. One separate chapter with case studies is included in the book. In addition, the latest common test standards and codes of practice are introduced in a few sections with extensive references. This textbook will serve courses in geosynthetics or earth reinforcement for graduate students in Geotechnical, Transportation, Hydraulic or Environmental Engineering. It may also be used as part of the undergraduate Geotechnical Engineering course for final year undergraduate students in Civil Engineering. The structure of this text also facilitates self-study by civil engineers, manufacturers and installers who wish to become familiar with the subject matter.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents results achieved during the first year's effort to develop test methods and use criteria for fabrics in drainage, erosion control and soil reinforcement applications. The report does not treat fabrics for use in asphalt pavement reinforcement. An extensive literature search and field survey was conducted resulting in the development of interim criteria and fabric properties needed for a wide range of fabric applications. Test methods to evaluate these properties are identified and new test methods suggested where existing ones are considered inadequate. Specific results obtained include a discussion of important fabric properties and how they are affected by type of polymer and manufacture, an identification of fabric uses together with what fabric properties are important for each use, and an appraisal of the current knowledge regarding soil-fabric interaction, fabric performance and cost effectiveness. Recommendations are made for new test methods, or modifications of existing ones which need to be developed, to evaluate important fabric properties. A wealth of basic data has been accumulated for the development of improved tests and criteria to be used in the next phase of the project.
