Many Shirshov’s students and students of his students had a successful research career in mathematics. AnatoliiShirshovwasbornonthe8thofAugustof1921inthevillageKolyvan near Novosibirsk. Before the II World War he started to study mathematics at Tomsk university but then went to the front to ?ght as a volunteer. In 1946 he continued his study at Voroshilovgrad (now Lugansk) Pedagogical Institute and at the same time taught mathematics at a secondary school. In 1950 Shirshov was accepted as a graduate student at the Moscow State University under the supervision of A. G. Kurosh. In 1953 he has successfully defended his Candidate of Science thesis (analog of a Ph. D. ) “Some problems in the theory of nonassociative rings and algebras” and joined the Department of Higher Algebra at the Moscow State University. In 1958 Shirshov was awarded the Doctor of Science degree for the thesis “On some classes of rings that are nearly associative”. In 1960 Shirshov moved to Novosibirsk (at the invitations of S. L. Sobolev and A. I. Malcev) to become one of the founders of the new mathematical institute of the Academy of Sciences (now Sobolev Institute of Mathematics) and to help the formation of the new Novosibirsk State University. From 1960 to 1973 he was a deputy director of the Institute and till his last days he led the research in the theory of algebras at the Institute.

Book Synopsis The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction, 1908-2008: People, Events, and Challenges in Mathematics Education by : Fulvia Furinghetti
Download or read book The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction, 1908-2008: People, Events, and Challenges in Mathematics Education written by Fulvia Furinghetti and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-30 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents the history of ICMI trough a prosopographical approach. In other words, it pays a lot of attention to the actors of the International movement. The portraits of the members of the ICMI Central Committees (1908-1936) and ICMI Executive Committees (1952-2008), and other eminent figures in ICMI history, who have passed away in the first 100 years of its life, are the guiding thread of the volume. Each portrait includes: · Biographical information · An outline of the various contributions made by the individual in question to the study of problems pertaining to mathematics teaching/education · Primary bibliography · Secondary with particular attention to the publications concerning the teaching of mathematics · Images: photos, book frontispieces, relevant manuscripts The authors of the portraits (30 altogether) are researchers in the history of mathematics, mathematics, and mathematics education. The focus on the officer’s role within ICMI and on his/her contributions to mathematics education, make the portraits different from usual biographies. In particular, since most officers were active mathematicians, the portraits shed light on aspects of their lesser-known activity. Connecting chapters place the action of these figures in the historical context and in the different phases of ICMI history.
Book Synopsis A. D. Alexandrov Selected Works by : Yu. G. Reshetnyak
Download or read book A. D. Alexandrov Selected Works written by Yu. G. Reshetnyak and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-02-21 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexandr Danilovich Alexandrov has been called a giant of 20th-century mathematics. This volume contains some of the most important papers by this renowned geometer and hence, some of his most influential ideas. Alexandrov addressed a wide range of modern mathematical problems, and he did so with intelligence and elegance, solving some of the discipline's most difficult and enduring challenges. He was the first to apply many of the tools and methods of the theory of real functions and functional analysis that are now current in geometry. The topics here include convex polyhedrons and closed surfaces, an elementary proof and extension of Minkowski's theorem, Riemannian geometry and a method for Dirichlet problems. This monograph, published in English for the first time, gives unparalleled access to a brilliant mind, and advanced students and researchers in applied mathematics and geometry will find it indispensable.

Book Synopsis Functional Analysis, Sobolev Spaces and Partial Differential Equations by : Haim Brezis
Download or read book Functional Analysis, Sobolev Spaces and Partial Differential Equations written by Haim Brezis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-02 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In addition, it contains a wealth of problems and exercises (with solutions) to guide the reader. Uniquely, this book presents in a coherent, concise and unified way the main results from functional analysis together with the main results from the theory of partial differential equations (PDEs). Although there are many books on functional analysis and many on PDEs, this is the first to cover both of these closely connected topics. Since the French book was first published, it has been translated into Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Romanian, Greek and Chinese. The English edition makes a welcome addition to this list.

Book Synopsis Equations of Mathematical Physics by : A. N. Tikhonov
Download or read book Equations of Mathematical Physics written by A. N. Tikhonov and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-09-16 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical physics plays an important role in the study of many physical processes — hydrodynamics, elasticity, and electrodynamics, to name just a few. Because of the enormous range and variety of problems dealt with by mathematical physics, this thorough advanced undergraduate- or graduate-level text considers only those problems leading to partial differential equations. Contents: I. Classification of Partial Differential Equations II. Evaluations of the Hyperbolic Type III. Equations of the Parabolic Type IV. Equations of Elliptic Type V. Wave Propagation in Space VI. Heat Conduction in Space VII. Equations of Elliptic Type (Continuation) The authors — two well-known Russian mathematicians — have focused on typical physical processes and the principal types of equations dealing with them. Special attention is paid throughout to mathematical formulation, rigorous solutions, and physical interpretation of the results obtained. Carefully chosen problems designed to promote technical skills are contained in each chapter, along with extremely useful appendixes that supply applications of solution methods described in the main text. At the end of the book, a helpful supplement discusses special functions, including spherical and cylindrical functions.
