This volume offers new methodologies and models for the subject of corporate patronage, and contains an extensive bibliography on corporate patronage, art collections and exhibitions, sponsorship, and philanthropy in the United States. Rockefeller Sr. and Jr., and Dorothy Shaver, and companies such as Herman Miller and Lord and Taylor, this volume looks at a wide array of works, ranging from sculpture, photography, mosaics, and murals to advertisements, department store displays, sportswear, medical schools, and public libraries.
Book Synopsis The Value of Art (New, expanded edition) by : Michael Findlay
Download or read book The Value of Art (New, expanded edition) written by Michael Findlay and published by Prestel Verlag. This book was released on 2022-11-02 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the tenth anniversary of its publication, this updated edition of a work ARTNews hailed as “one of the best books ever published on the art world” features new material on the latest art deals, reflections on race and culture, the impact of the pandemic on the art world, and more. Internationally renowned dealer and market expert Michael Findlay offers a lively and authoritative look at the financial and emotional value of art throughout history. In this newly revised, updated, and generously illustrated edition Findlay draws on a half-century in the business and a passion for great art to question and redefine what we mean by “value,” addressing developments in this conversation since the book was first published in 2012: the rise of NFTs and digital art; the auction house as theatre; the pressing relationship between art and society’s fraught political landscape; and the impact of the pandemic. With style and wry wit, Findlay demystifies how art is bought and sold while also constantly looking beyond sales figures to emphasize the primacy of art’s essential, noncommercial worth. Coloring his account with wise advice, insider anecdotes involving scoundrels and scams, stories of celebrity collectors, and remarkable discoveries, Findlay has distilled a lifetime’s experience in this indispensable guide, now updated for today’s sophisticated and discerning audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the biggest questions of the financial crisis has not been answered until now: What happened at Lehman Brothers and why was it allowed to fail, with aftershocks that rocked the global economy? In this news-making, often astonishing book, a former Lehman Brothers Vice President gives us the straight answers—right from the belly of the beast. In A Colossal Failure of Common Sense, Larry McDonald, a Wall Street insider, reveals, the culture and unspoken rules of the game like no book has ever done. The book is couched in the very human story of Larry McDonald’s Horatio Alger-like rise from a Massachusetts “gateway to nowhere” housing project to the New York headquarters of Lehman Brothers, home of one of the world’s toughest trading floors. We get a close-up view of the participants in the Lehman collapse, especially those who saw it coming with a helpless, angry certainty. We meet the Brahmins at the top, whose reckless, pedal-to-the-floor addiction to growth finally demolished the nation’ s oldest investment bank. The Wall Street we encounter here is a ruthless place, where brilliance, arrogance, ambition, greed, capacity for relentless toil, and other human traits combine in a potent mix that sometimes fuels prosperity but occasionally destroys it. The full significance of the dissolution of Lehman Brothers remains to be measured. But this much is certain: it was a devastating blow to America’s—and the world’s—financial system. And it need not have happened. This is the story of why it did.

Book Synopsis The Whitney Women and the Museum They Made by : Flora Miller Biddle
Download or read book The Whitney Women and the Museum They Made written by Flora Miller Biddle and published by Skyhorse Publishing Inc.. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney opened her studio on Eighth Street in Manhattan in 1914--which almost two decades later evolved into the Whitney Museum--contemporary American artists had little or no outlet for their work. Yet, especially in the latter half of the century, vast fortunes were amassed by many who built themselves extraordinary mansions that cried out to be embellished with works of art. In those days, however, the only place art was to be found and collected was Europe. American artists more often than not sought inspiration and recognition in Europe. It was, therefore, all the more remarkable when Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, scion of America's wealthiest family and herself a sculptor, opened her own studio in Greenwich Village for exhibitions of contemporary American artists. After twenty-two years on Eighth Street, the Whitney moved uptown to Fifty-fourth Street next to the Museum of Modern Art. When a desirable plot of land was located and purchased on Madison Avenue and Seventy-fifth Street in 1964, the famed architect Marcel Breuer was commissioned to build the new Whitney Museum. The imposing granite structure of the Whitney Museum of American Art, as we know it today, opened its doors in 1966 and has become one of America's most prominent cultural institutions. When Gertrude died in 1942, her daughter Flora Miller took over as head of the Whitney. Like her mother, she dedicated her all--her time and fortune--to the museum. In 1977, the third-generation Whitney woman, Flora Biddle, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney's granddaughter, became president. As time went on, the size and scope of the Whitney and its increasing financial demands led it to pass from a family-run museum to a trustee-run business. The Whitney Women and the Museum They Made is a tale in which high ideals, extraordinary altruism, and great dedication increasingly come face to face with large egos, big business, intrigue, and the harsh realities of today's world.
