Book excerpt: Distributions of bright and dark parts of spectroheliograms obtained in metal lines (Fel 4202 A, 4384 A, Cal 4227 A, SrII 4078 A, NaI 5890 A and K3CaII) at different distances from line centers are compared. It is concluded that these brightness distributions do not contradict the idea on the structure of the chromosphere which were developed by the author in Dubov, (1967). The brightness distributions on metal lines in spectroheliograms mainly reflect the structure of the velocity fields in the photosphere and the distribution of photospheric faculae in active regions. Ascending motions are obsrved mostly near boundaries of supergranules (except for the D2NaI line). The stronger the line, the greater is the influence of the structure of the atmosphere on the brightness distribution on the corresponding spectroheliogram. This effect is expressed most clearly on the Na 5890 A line. The descent of matter (as in H sub alpha) is observed most frequently on this line near the boundaries of super-granules. According to the brightness distributions on spectroheliograms which were taken on the ionized strontium 4078 A line, it can be assumed that both relatively deep layers of the photosphere and a rather high layer of the chromosphere take part in the formation of the outgoing radiation on this line.

The challenge was taken up by the president of Commission 10, Prof. K. O. Kiepenheuer, and his persuasive advocacy has led eventually to the present book. In the course of the work, the declared aim but not the basic purpose was revised. Rather than prepare a list of standard terms, we have preferred to collect together all the terms that appear in current English-language literature. Synonyms and partially overlapping terms are all recorded for the most part without prejudice. Each has been defined as exactly as possible with the hope that in the future they may be used and understood without ambiguity. It would be a step on the road to standardisation if these terms were not re-used for new phenomena. New observations and new theories will lead to reappraisals and redefinitions so the Glossary is intended more as a guide to the present situation than as a rule-book.

Book excerpt: The AFCRL 29-ft millimeter wave antenna at the Prospect Hill Millimeter Wave Observatory, Waltham, Massachusetts, is used to make solar maps (spectroheliograms), at a wavelength of 8.6 mm, for solar forecasting purposes. The half-power beamwidth of the antenna, although only 4 min of arc, is not narrow enough to detect the smaller hot regions that can develop into active centers on the sun. To overcome this limitation, a data-reduction process that can effectively narrow the beamwidth of the antenna, so that finer details on the maps will be visible, is needed. A computer program that can effectively narrow the beamwidth of the scanning antenna system by restoring and enhancing the antenna output has been applied to the Prospect Hill maps. It is believed that the enhanced maps can be further improved if a quiet sun component, or mean map, is subtracted from daily maps before the restoration is attempted. This report describes the technique used on the Prospect Hill IBM 1800 computer system to center the mean and daily maps on a common heliographic reference to effect the subtraction. (Author).
