Book Synopsis Management Challenges for Africa in the Twenty-First Century by : Felix M. Edoho
Download or read book Management Challenges for Africa in the Twenty-First Century written by Felix M. Edoho and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-12-30 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edoho and his contributors examine the management challenges facing African governments and businesses on the eve of a new millennium. As the authors make clear, Africa's future is defined by how Africa does in the 21st century. For Africa, a major challenge is how to effectively and efficiently manage its vast wealth. Africa is not poor because it is poor—it is poor because it cannot manage its development process. The shortages of managerial knowledge, skills, and talents are pervasive. Consequently, the region lacks the ability to organize production and run operations effectively and efficiently. The task of developing managerial manpower in Africa is not only imperative, it is urgent. After outlining theoretical and applied perspectives on management, the volume examines the public and private sector planning and management. It then explores the globalization of management technology, provides case studies of African management dilemmas, looks at management ethics and morality, and concludes with an analysis of the role of management in African national development. As the authors make clear, abundant resources will not of themselves usher in an African economic renaissance. Africa needs skills to identify and analyze its resources, to undertake investment, and to establish and run all kinds of organizations. Until Africa develops its indigenous managerial talents, development will continue to be elusive, and the process traumatizing. An important resource for scholars, students, and policy makers involved with African economic development.

Book Synopsis Social Agency by : Wojciech W. Gasparski
Download or read book Social Agency written by Wojciech W. Gasparski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praxiology deals with doing and working from the point of view of effectiveness. It has three components: analysis of concepts involving purposive actions; critique of models of action from the viewpoint of efficiency; and normative advisory aspects in recommendations for increasing human efficiency. This fourth volume of the Praxiology series is devoted to the very special topic of social agency. It focuses on two important praxiological concepts: rationality and preparation as preconditions for human action to be effective and efficient. The question of efficiency was raised by Anatol Rapoport over three decades ago in his lecture to the audience at the Praxiological Seminar in Warsaw in 1961. Social Agency begins with an article written by this same famous scholar on the topic of decision theory, "Social Dilemmas: A Historical Overview." Social dilemmas is the subject of the first part of this volume, a question related to studies on human action guided by two types of rationality: individual and collective rationality. The intersection of the two, in which individuals meet collectives, creates the situation in which social agency emerges, generating dilemmatic circumstances for the actors involved. The articles collected in the second part explore praxiological dimensions of education aimed toward the knowledge society, because of knowledge possessed and produced by educated persons. Chapters and contributors to volume 4 include: "Five Questions on the Research on Social Dilemmas" by Marek K. Mlicki; "Psychological Processes Underlying Cooperation in Social Dilemmas" by Paul A. M. Van Lange and David M. Messick; "Designing a System for Design Learning: Designers and/or Learners?" by Arne Collen; "Creating an Evolutionary Image of New Systems of Learning and Human Development" by Janet A. Khan; and "A Study Program Design in Retrospect" by Stig C. Holmberg. Social Agency continues the trend of original research done in a little-known, but important area. Social scientists, policymakers, and educators will benefit from this work.

Book Synopsis Organizational Cultures by : Diana C. Pheysey
Download or read book Organizational Cultures written by Diana C. Pheysey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years global trade and telecommunications have rapidly been spreading the influence of large multinational forms of organization. An integral part of this process has been the rise of 'organizational cultures' unique to particular firms. In a world where such cultures are often in conflict with the societies in which they operate how can we understand the workings of cultural patterns and the kinds of transformations they can create? This concise new introductory text provides succint analysis of organizational cultures and types of change they can set in motion. 'culture' is used in an original way to bring together and make sense of cenrtral issues of organizational behaviour. The author explores the way in which forms of culture can influence styles of management, attitudes toward leadership, the level of motivation in the workplace and `hidden agendas' in group dynamics. Organizational Cultures raises the important issue of whether their can be such a thing as a `right decision' for an organization, and brings into focus the major implications and dangers of the growing numbers of supra-national firms both in terms of internal structure and for the context which they function. Throughout, the author succeeds in weaving together behaviour and organization, thus reconciling the traditional divorce between psychology and sociology in the field. Drawing on case studies from Europe, Asia, Africa, Organizational Cultures provides a truly international insight into forms of organizational behaviour. Detailed chapter objectives and summaries are provided to aid progress and self-assessment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Collection Of Essays Seeks To Explore Common Lessons From Political Sociology And Development Studies And In This Process Tries To Resolve The Tension Between The Author S Academic And Practitioner Worldviews. The Author Has Tried To Highlight One Principal Concern In This Volume That Development Is More Often Than Not A Multicultural Construct Of Everyday Politics That Is Context-Bound And Predicated By Statements Of Informed Choices On The Part Of The Stakeholders And/Or Beneficiaries Involved. So Development Is More About Who Gets What, When, How, Where And Why In Terms Of An Authoritative Allocation Of Values That Is Underpinned By Definitions Of Stakeholders Or Beneficiaries Or Affected Persons. Such Definitions Are Power Statements That Are Scripted By Agencies That Generally Tend To View Development As An Unevenness That May Be Restructured In Terms Of Human And Physical Engineering As A Level Playing Ground Where Players Are Equipped With Uniform Access To Resources And Similar Opportunities. This Is, However, A Contentious Issue Without Any Simple Answers. Such An Interventionist Approach May Not Always Be Sponsored By The Mode Of Production Or The Marketplace Of Politics That By Definition Thrives On Discrepancies And Discriminations Among Unequally Affected Persons. The Present Work Will Be Of Interest To Political Sociologists, Economic And Social Historians, Development Consultants, Non-Profit Professionals, Social Workers, Grassroots Activists, Urban Planners, Academics As Well As Researchers Working In The Development Sector.

Book Synopsis Capitalism and Theory: Selected Writings of Michael Kidron by : Michael Kidron
Download or read book Capitalism and Theory: Selected Writings of Michael Kidron written by Michael Kidron and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inspiring speaker and brilliantly sophisticated theorist, Michael Kidron was a leading figure in the International Socialist tradition from the 1950s until his death in 2003. Never satisfied with merely restating the assumed tenets of Marxism, Kidron insisted that theory must evolve alongside a changing world &mdash an iconoclastic orientation which led him to clash with others on the left, including the British Communist Party and, later, the Socialist Workers Party itself under the leadership of Kidron's long-time comrade Tony Cliff. This undoctrinaire commitment to theoretical openness was also evident in Kidron's period as an editor with Pluto Books in the 1970s and 1980s, when the publisher became a crucial forum for developing socialist ideas and bringing them to a wider audience. Selected Writings collects a number of Kidron's most important essays: 'Reform and Revolution' offers a critique of post-war social democracy, written several decades before its collapse into neoliberalism; 'The Permanent Arms Economy' succinctly lays out what is perhaps Kidron's best-known theoretical contribution; 'Black Reformism' both provides an analysis of the imperialism of Kidron's day, and attacks the then-common assumption that Third World revolutions opened a road to world socialism. In recognition of Kidron's commitment to constantly re-examining theory, this volume also includes his 1977 essay 'Two Insights Don't Make a Theory', in which he criticises and updates his own earlier work in light of historical developments. Edited and introduced by Richard Kuper, who worked alongside Kidron at Pluto, this volume is the best introduction to one of the most original Marxist thinkers of recent times.
