Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in Mammalogy: Selected From the Original Literature and Introduced With Comments The published literature on the scientific study of mammals, which, broadly speaking, comprises the field of mammalogy, includes about separate papers, and new papers are now being published at the rate of 5000 to 6000 each year, the actual number depending on where one draws the borders of the discipline. Precise borders do not exist. Mammalogy, like other scientific fields, draws from and contributes to various areas of human knowledge. Our selection of the 64 papers here reproduced was influenced by: (1) our con cept of the scope of mammalogy and of a reasonable and representative bal ance of its parts at this time; (2) our desire to illustrate various ways in which a wide variety of information can be presented in published form; and (3) our awareness that most of our readers will be English-speaking Americans, which led us to use articles published in English and selected predominantly from American sources. Nevertheless, we judge that the broad sweep of concepts and methods portrayed is relevant to students of mammalogy in all parts of the world. We have selected short papers, in general less than 20 pages in length, in preference to either longer papers or excerpts therefrom - chiefly because of space, but also because we want the serious student, who may later contribute to the literature himself, to see each published work in its entirety as one tangible contribution to knowledge. He can then grasp its concept, its methodology, its organization, its presentation, its conclusions, and perhaps even its limitations. On the latter score we would note that, although we think the papers selected are worthy contributions and make the points we wish to emphasize, we do not pretend to have selected the finest papers ever published. We could have used a somewhat different selection to serve much the same purpose, and we are sure someone else would use a different selection to represent his views of mammalogy. Book excerpt: Refined in detail through three editions, the manuals outstanding features include: an explanation of keys and how to use them; the inclusion of keys designed to identify by order or family extant mammals of the world; special sections containing comments and suggestions on identification; information on working with map coordinates and global positioning receivers; coverage of the use of computer programs to get estimates of home-range size and characteristics; and ideas for locating reliable, authoritative literature on mammals. A section on techniques for studying mammals in the field and in the laboratory rounds out this student-friendly learning tool. Beautifully wrought illustrations and diagrams accurately portray visual details of mammal groups or characteristics that are unavailable to study in person. Moreover, well-designed laboratory exercises provide opportunities to apply knowledge and master understanding.

Book excerpt: Reflecting the expertise and perspective of five leading mammalogists, the fourth edition of Mammalogy: Adaptation, Diversity, Ecology significantly updates taxonomy, includes a new chapter on mammalian molecular phylogenetics, and highlights several recently described species. There are close to 5,500 species in the class Mammalia, including the blue whale—the largest animal that has ever lived—and the pygmy shrew, which weighs little more than a penny. The functional diversity of mammals has allowed them to play critical roles in every ecosystem, whether marine, freshwater, alpine, tundra, forest, or desert. Many mammal species are critically endangered and present complex conservation and management challenges. This book touches on those challenges, which are often precipitated by overharvesting and habitat loss, as well as emerging threats, such as the impact of wind turbines and white nose syndrome on bats and chronic wasting disease on deer. Among the updates and additions to the fourth edition of Mammalogy are numerous new photos, figures, and cladograms, over 4,200 references, as well as • A completely new chapter on mammalian phylogeny and genomics • Current taxonomy—including major changes to orders, suborders, and superfamilies of bats and rodents • An explanation of the recent inclusion of whales with terrestrial even-toed ungulates • Updates on mammalian structural, functional adaptations, and fossil history • recent advances in our understanding of phylogeny, biogeography, social behavior, and ecology • A discussion of two new orders and thirteen newly recognized extant families • Reflections on the implications of climate change for mammals • Thorough examinations of several recently described species, including Durrell's vontsira (Salanoia durrelli) and the Laotian rock rat (Laonastes aenigmamus) • An explanation of mammalian biomechanics, such as that seen in lunge feeding of baleen whales • Breakout boxes on unique aspects of mammals, including the syntax of bat songs, singing mice, and why there are no green mammals (unless we count algae-covered sloths) Maintaining the accessible, readable style for which Feldhamer and his coauthors are well known, this new edition of Mammalogy is the authoritative textbook on this amazingly diverse class of vertebrates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most of us the word "desert" conjures up images of barren wasteland, vast, dry stretches inimical to life. But for a great array of creatures, perhaps even more plentiful than those who inhabit tropical rainforests, the desert is a haven and a home. Travel with Michael Mares into the deserts of Argentina, Iran, Egypt, and the American Southwest and you will encounter a rich and memorable variety of these small, tenacious animals, many of them first discovered by Mares in areas never before studied. Accompanying Mares on his forays into these hostile habitats, we observe the remarkable behavioral, physiological, and ecological adaptations that have allowed such little-known species of rodents, bats, and other small mammals to persist in an arid world. At the same time, we see firsthand the perils and pitfalls that await biologists who venture into the field to investigate new habitats, discover new species, and add to our knowledge of the diversity of life. Filled with the seductions and trials that such adventures entail, A Desert Calling affords an intimate understanding of the biologist's vocation. As he astonishes us with the range and variety of knowledge to be acquired through the determined investigation of little-known habitats, Mares opens a window on his own uncommon life, as well as on the uncommon life of the remote and mysterious corners of our planet.
