Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical coatings, i.e. multilayer stacks composed from a certain number of thin individual layers, are an essential part of any optical system necessary to tailor the properties of the optical surfaces. Hereby, the performance of any optical coating is defined by a well-balanced interplay between the properties of the individual coating materials and the geometrical parameters (such as film thickness) which define their arrangement. In all scientific books dealing with the performance of optical coatings, the main focus is on optimizing the geometrical coating parameters, particularly the number of individual layers and their thickness. At the same time, much less attention is paid to another degree of freedom in coating design, namely the possibility to tailor optical material properties to an optimum relevant for the required specification. This book, on the contrary, concentrates on the material aside of the problem. After a comprehensive review of the basics of thin film theory, traditional optical coating material properties and their relation to the efficiency of coating design methods, emphasis is placed on novel results concerning the application of material mixtures and nanostructured coatings in optical coating theory and practice, including porous layers, dielectric mixtures as well as metal island films for different applications.

Book Synopsis Electromagnetic Optics of Thin-Film Coatings by : Claude Amra
Download or read book Electromagnetic Optics of Thin-Film Coatings written by Claude Amra and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three experts in the field of thin-film optics present a detailed and self-contained theoretical study of planar multilayers and how they can be effectively exploited in both traditional and modern applications. Starting with a discussion of the relevant electromagnetic optics, the fundamental optical properties of multilayers are introduced using an electromagnetic approach based on a direct solving of Maxwell's equations by Fourier transforms. This powerful approach is illustrated through the comprehensive description of two of the most important phenomena in multilayers, i.e. giant field enhancement in dielectric stacks and light scattering from thin-film optical filters. The same approach is extended to the description of the operation of planar microcavities and the balance of energy between radiated and trapped light. This book will be valuable to researchers, engineers and graduate students with interests in nanophotonics, optical telecommunications, observational astronomy and gravitational wave detection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the basic fundamentals, understanding, and design of optical thin films, or interference coatings for practical production. It focuses on one of the main subjects that is critical to meeting the practical challenges of producing optical coatings. This is the design of coatings, an understanding of which allows the practitioner to know the possibilities and limitations involved in reducing, enhancing, or otherwise controlling the reflection, transmission, and absorption of light (visible or otherwise). This Fifth Edition now includes measurement of index, thickness, and color; the determination of tooling factors; and the programming of Macros, Workbooks, and FilmStar Basic.

Book Synopsis Evolutionary Design and Manufacture by : I.C. Parmee
Download or read book Evolutionary Design and Manufacture written by I.C. Parmee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth evolutionary/adaptive computing conference at the University of Plymouth again explores the utility of various evolutionary/adaptive search algorithms and complementary computational intelligence techniques within design and manufacturing. The content of the following chapters represents a selection of the diverse set of papers presented at the conference that relate to both engineering design and also to more general design areas. This expansion has been the result of a conscious effort to recognise generic problem areas and complementary research across a wide range of design and manufacture activity. There has been a major increase in both research into and utilisation of evolutionary and adaptive systems within the last two years. This is reflected in the establishment of major annual joint US genetic and evolutionary computing conferences and the introduction of a large number of events relating to the application of these technologies in specific fields. The Plymouth conference remains a long-standing. event both as ACDM and as the earlier ACEDC series. The conference maintains its policy of single stream presentation and associated poster and demonstrator sessions. The event retains the support of several UK Engineering Institutions and is now recognised by the International Society for Genetic and Evolutionary Computation as a mainstream event. It continues to attract an international audience of leading researchers and practitioners in the field.
