Download or read book Reading Publics written by Tom Glynn and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2015-01-22 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On May 11, 1911, the New York Public Library opened its “marble palace for book lovers” on Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. This was the city’s first public library in the modern sense, a tax-supported, circulating collection free to every citizen. Since before the Revolution, however, New York’s reading publics had access to a range of “public libraries” as the term was understood by contemporaries. In its most basic sense a public library in the eighteenth and most of the nineteenth centuries simply meant a shared collection of books that was available to the general public and promoted the public good. From the founding in 1754 of the New York Society Library up to 1911, public libraries took a variety of forms. Some of them were free, charitable institutions, while others required a membership or an annual subscription. Some, such as the Biblical Library of the American Bible Society, were highly specialized; others, like the Astor Library, developed extensive, inclusive collections. What all the public libraries of this period had in common, at least ostensibly, was the conviction that good books helped ensure a productive, virtuous, orderly republic—that good reading promoted the public good. Tom Glynn’s vivid, deeply researched history of New York City’s public libraries over the course of more than a century and a half illuminates how the public and private functions of reading changed over time and how shared collections of books could serve both public and private ends. Reading Publics examines how books and reading helped construct social identities and how print functioned within and across groups, including but not limited to socioeconomic classes. The author offers an accessible while scholarly exploration of how republican and liberal values, shifting understandings of “public” and “private,” and the debate over fiction influenced the development and character of New York City’s public libraries in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Reading Publics is an important contribution to the social and cultural history of New York City that firmly places the city’s early public libraries within the history of reading and print culture in the United States.

Book excerpt: This updated edition of Defining Memory: Local Museums and the Construction of History in America’s Changing Communities offers readers multiple lenses for viewing and discussing local institutions. New chapters are included in a section titled “Museums Moving Forward,” which analyzes the ways in which local museums have come to adopt digital technologies in selecting items for exhibitions as well as the complexities of creating institutions devoted to marginalized histories. In addition to the new chapters, the second edition updates existing chapters, presenting changes to the museums discussed. It features expanded discussions of how local museums treat (or ignore) racial and ethnic diversity and concludes with a look at how business relationships, political events, and the economy affect what is shown and how it is displayed in local museums.

Book Synopsis Medicine: Preserving the Passion by : Phil R. Manning
Download or read book Medicine: Preserving the Passion written by Phil R. Manning and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Medicine: Preserving the Passion, Phil R. Manning, a pioneer and recognized authority in continuing medical education, and Lois DeBakey, a passionate advocate of critical reasoning and leading scholar in scientific communication, endeavor to shift the focus in lifelong learning from group exercises in a lecture hall to self-directed, practice-related activities. Al though most experts have applauded this new concept, few publications have addressed methods for implementation. The Manning-DeBakey book describes such methods as devised by outstanding clinicians and acade micians to obtain educational benefit from their clinical experience. Some techniques inspired by quality assurance, for example, these master cli nicians have used successfully to improve their knowledge, skills, and patient care. This book not only identifies the primary concerns in con tinuing medical education, but also offers sound recommendations and effective solutions and suggests future directions and approaches. The authors have analyzed the continuing educational practices of phy sicians in a wide range of environments, from small communities to the most acclaimed medical centers, and have extracted additional advice from the writings of past authorities like Osler. The resulting concepts will un doubtedly attract wide public attention. Office practice audit, self-directed learning, case indexing, patient education, computer-assisted education, and collegial networks, as well as regular reading, writing, and teaching, are among the successful methods described by physicians and surgeons who exemplify the highest standards of medical practice.
Book Synopsis Doctors, Nurses, and Medical Practitioners by : Lois N. Magner
Download or read book Doctors, Nurses, and Medical Practitioners written by Lois N. Magner and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1997-08-26 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biographical essays on 56 remarkable individuals in the medical field are included in this book. Many of these figures are not well known outside of their own country, calling, or specialized field; some are famous, some infamous, but most were dedicated to a more egalitarian system of health care delivery. They are significant because of their ideas, diagnostic or therapeutic methods, writings, the institutions that they founded, and the impetus they imparted to their students. By integrating biographies of doctors, nurses, and practitioners of different time periods and different cultures, this book addresses the kinds of questions currently of interest to scholars and students. Profiles of individuals from different cultures and time periods provide a valuable perspective on changing patterns of health and disease and differences in medical philosophy. Each profile focuses on one person's life and career, and the relationship of that individual's work to the universal quest for health and healing. Each profile's author has provided a bibliography and included, wherever possible, a guide to the archival materials available, works written by and about the individual, and recent scholarship concerning related topics to help readers find further information on subjects that pique their interest.

Book Synopsis Thornton's Medical Books, Libraries, and Collectors by : John Leonard Thornton
Download or read book Thornton's Medical Books, Libraries, and Collectors written by John Leonard Thornton and published by Gower Publishing Company, Limited. This book was released on 1990 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the standard work on the production, distribution and storage of medical literature from the earliest times. This third edition, edited by Alain Besson, is in keeping with the author's original intention and retains the basic structure of the first two editions. A new team of contributors have each provided chapters on their specialized subject to ensure a wide-ranging but detailed study. The opening chapter 'Medical Books before the Invention of Printing' now focuses on the production and transmission of medical manuscripts in the West, instead of giving a shallow treatment to the entire field of manuscript studies.
