Book Synopsis Selected Mathematical Works by : Lewis Carroll

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "Selected Mathematical Works: Symbolic Logic + The Game of Logic + Feeding the Mind" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Lewis Carroll wrote several mathematics books. He was mainly interested in using logic diagrams as a pedagogical tool. Symbolic Logic, first published in 1896, contains literally dozens of puzzles. He believed heartily that children would enjoy learning mathematics if they could be enticed by amusing stories and puzzles. The Game of Logic, published in 1897, was intended to teach logic to children. His "game" consisted of a card with two diagrams, together with a set of counters, five grey and four red. The two diagrams were Carroll's version of a two-set and a three-set Venn diagram. A manuscript of a brief lecture Lewis Carroll once gave, Feeding the Mind, discusses the importance of not only feeding the body, but also the mind. Carroll wittily puts forth connections between the diet of the body and mind, and gives helpful tips on how to best digest knowledge in the brain. This essay was originally printed in 1907. Lewis Carroll ((1832-1898) is best known as the author of Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass. His real name was Charles Dodgson. His father, the Reverend Charles Dodgson, instilled in his son a love of mathematics from an early age. Lewis studied at Oxford, and later taught there as a Mathematics Lecturer.

Book Synopsis Runs and Patterns in Probability: Selected Papers by : Anant P. Godbole

This book was released on 1994-04-30 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Probability Theory of Patterns and Runs has had a long and distinguished history, starting with the work of de Moivre in the 18th century and that of von Mises in the early 1920's, and continuing with the renewal-theoretic results in Feller's classic text An Introduction to Probability Theory and its Applications, Volume 1. It is worthwhile to note, in particular, that de Moivre, in the third edition of The Doctrine of Chances (1756, reprinted by Chelsea in 1967, pp. 254-259), provides the generating function for the waiting time for the appearance of k consecutive successes. During the 1940's, statisticians such as Mood, Wolfowitz, David and Mosteller studied the distribution theory, both exact and asymptotic, of run-related statistics, thereby laying the foundation for several exact run tests. In the last two decades or so, the theory has seen an impressive re-emergence, primarily due to important developments in Molecular Biology, but also due to related research thrusts in Reliability Theory, Distribution Theory, Combinatorics, and Statistics.

Download or read book Selected Papers I written by Hans Grauert and published by Springer. This book was released on 1994-12-21 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hans Grauert was one of the world's leading mathematicians in the field of Several Complex Variables; he not only shaped the development of this area decisively but was also responsible for some of its most important results. This representative selection of mathematical papers exhibits Grauert's influential research and reflects two decades of excellence. In this edition, each paper has been augmented by a detailed commentary, thus offering a comprehensive survey of the development of this fascinating subject from its beginnings in Münster and Göttingen. Hans Grauert may be regarded as a direct successor of Gauss, holding a chair at Göttingen that before him was held by Siegel, Weyl, Hilbert, Riemann and Gauss.
