Download or read book To the South Polar Regions written by Louis Bernacchi and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from To the South Polar Regions: Expedition of 1898-1900 IN the following pages an attempt has been made to give an account of the cruise of the ship Sout/zem Cross to the South Polar Seas, and of the first winter ever spent on Antarctic shores. The aim of this book is to present to the general reader a simple account of our experiences and of the phenomena witnessed in those little-known regions. The recorded minutiae of monotonous months have been, as far as possible, avoided. So that it is hoped these pages may be read without weariness and, perhaps, with a certain amount of profit, for although in no way a scientific narrative of the voyage, great care has been taken to make any scientific information and fresh facts as accurate as possible. The scientific results of the expedition have been published elsewhere, but a short account of some of the results obtained is given at the end of this volume, and may prove of interest to some readers. It is, no doubt, extremely difficult to sustain interest in a narrative dealing with a locality so barren and devoid of life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Northern Mists, Vol. 1 of 2: Arctic Exploration in Early Times His book owes its existence in the first instance to a rash promise made some years ago to my friend Dr. J. Scott Keltie, of London, that I would try, when time permitted, to contribute a volume on the history of arctic voyages to his series of books on geographical exploration. The subject was an attractive one; I thought I was fairly familiar with it, and did not expect the book to take a very long time when once I made a start with it. On account of other studies it was a long while before I could do this but when at last I seriously took the work in hand, the subject in return monopolised my whole powers.
