Compliance with their request, however, has been a labor of love, and I trust it may prove not altogether labor lost. Book excerpt: The Letters of Pliny the Younger, also known as the Epistles of Pliny the Younger, have been studied for centuries, as they offer a unique and intimate glimpse into the daily life of Romans in the 1st century AD. Through his letters, the Roman writer and lawyer Pliny the Younger (whose full name was Gaius Plinius Caecilius Secundus) discusses philosophical and moral issues; but he also talks about everyday matters and topics related to his administrative duties. One of these letters, Letter 16 from Book VI, addressed to Tacitus, holds unparalleled historical value. In it, Pliny describes the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, which destroyed the city of Pompeii. Many scholars claim that with his letters, Pliny invented a new literary genre: the letter written not only to establish pleasant communication with peers but also to publish it later. Pliny compiled copies of every letter he wrote throughout his life and published those he considered the best in twelve books. This edition presents selected letters chosen for their various characteristics and covering several books, focusing mainly on Books I, II, and III. The work is part of the famous collection: 501 Books You Must Read.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Letters of Pliny: With Notes for the Use of Schools The text of this selection of Pliny's letters is that of Keil (leipsic, Keil has prefixed to this (his second edition) an admirable account of the materials extant for a critical edition of the works of the author, and an estimate of their comparative authority. He distinguishes three families of extant mss. The first is represented by the Medicean and Vatican mss. Of these the Vatican, though perhaps the more ancient, contains only the first four books. The Medicean, containing all the letters except those to and from Trajan, must therefore hold the first place in importance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first general introduction to Pliny's Letters published in any language, combining close readings with broader context and adopting a fresh and innovative approach to reading the letters as an artistically structured collection. Chapter 1 traces Pliny's autobiographical narrative throughout the Letters; Chapter 2 undertakes detailed study of Book 6 as an artistic entity; while Chapter 3 sets Pliny's letters within a Roman epistolographical tradition dominated by Cicero and Seneca. Chapters 4 to 7 study thematic letter cycles within the collection, including those on Pliny's famous country villas and his relationships with Pliny the Elder and Tacitus. The final chapter focuses on the 'grand design' which unifies and structures the collection. Four detailed appendices give invaluable historical and scholarly context, including a helpful timeline for Pliny's life and career, detailed bibliographical help on over 30 popular topics in Pliny's letters and a summary of the main characters mentioned in the Letters.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Letters of the Younger Pliny The text of the present edition is constituted on the basis of new and complete collations of most of the manuscripts cited, and of the careful study to a greater or less extent of many other manuscripts of the Letters. The collations were made during the course of two journeys on the continent of Europe, one in 1895, and another (of fourteen months) in 1898-99, which were chiefly devoted to this task. I desire to acknowledge the great kindness and courtesy shown by Father Ehrle, Prefect of the Vatican Library, by the Prefect and other officials of the Laurentian and Riccardian Libraries at Florence, and indeed by all the authorities of collections of manu scripts to whom I have had occasion to appeal for permission to carry on my work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Letters of Pliny It remains to say something of Pliny's family life. Apparently 5. Family he was three times married. Of the first two wives we know hfe' nothing, but the third, Calpurnia, is charmingly described in iv. 19, a letter written soon after the marriage, to his wife's maiden aunt, Hispulla, who, had had the charge of her upbringing. Calpurnia was the daughter of an influential citizen of Comum, and must have been very young at the time of her marriage, though Pliny himself was well advanced in middle life. Their happiness, however, was complete, in Spite of disappointed hopes of children. Calpurnia accompanied her husband to his province, and presumably survived him. Pliny writes throughout from the point of view of the rich man. He was born to wealth on both sides tis family. His father and mother both had estates near the lake of Como, and his adoption as his uncle's heir in a.d. 79 brought him further accessions. He himself had two favourite villas on the lake, which he called playfully 'tragedy' and 'comedy', besides his winter place at Laurentum (ii. His summer retreat in Etruria (ix. His town-house on the Esquiline hill at Rome (iii. 21. And his places at Tusculum (iv. 13. I), Tibur, and Praeneste (v. 6. But though rich he was no millionaire; his wealth came mainly from land, and was therefore liable to the embarrassments of bad harvests and insolvent tenants. He was a careful landlord (ix. 36. 6) and a good master (viii. I6). About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pliny's Women offers a comprehensive consideration of the many women who appear in the letters of Pliny the Younger. Combining detailed prosopography with close literary analysis, Jacqueline Carlon examines the identities of the women whom Pliny includes and how they and the men with whom they are associated contribute both to this presentation of exemplary Romans and particularly to his own self-promotion. Virtually all of the named women in Pliny's nine-book corpus are considered. They form six distinct groups: those associated with opposition to the principate; the family of Pliny's mentor, Corellius Rufus; his own family members; women involved in testamentary disputes; ideal wives; and women of unseemly character. Detailed analysis of each letter mentioning women includes the identity of its recipient and everyone named within, its disposition within the collection, Pliny's language and style, and its significance to our perception of the changing social fabric of the early principate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pliny and the Eruption of Vesuvius is a forensic examination of two of the most famous letters from the ancient Mediterranean world: Pliny the Younger’s Epistulae 6.16 and 6.20, which offer a contemporary account of the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79. These letters, sent to the historian Tacitus, provide accounts by Pliny the Younger about what happened when Mt Vesuvius exploded, destroying the surrounding towns and countryside, including Pompeii and Herculaneum, and killing his uncle, Pliny the Elder. This volume provides the first comprehensive full-length treatment of these documents, contextualized by evidence-rich biographies for both Plinys, and a synthesis of the latest archaeological and volcanological research which answers questions about the eruption date. A new collation of sources results in a detailed manuscript tradition and an authoritative Latin text, while commentaries on each letter offer copiously referenced insights on their structure, style, and meaning. Pliny and the Eruption of Vesuvius offers a thorough companion to these letters, and to the eruption, which will be of interest not only to those working on Vesuvius, Pompeii, and Herculaneum, and the works of Pliny but also to general readers, Latin students, and scholars of the Roman world more broadly.

This intriguing collection of essays by contemporary classicists reveals new discoveries, new interpretations and new ways of exploring the experiences of the ancient world. Through one and a half millennia of literature, politics, philosophy, law, religion and art, the classical world formed the origin of western culture and thought. This book emphasises the many ways in which it continues to engage with contemporary life. Offering a wide variety of authorial style, the chapters range in subject matter from contemporary poets' exploitation of Greek and Latin authors, via newly discovered literary texts and art works, to modern arguments about ancient democracy and slavery, and close readings of the great poets and philosophers of antiquity. This engaging book reflects the current rejuvenation of classical studies and will fascinate anyone with an interest in western history.
