This statement is made without the slightest desire to cast aspersions upon the excellent work in Latin done in many schools. I am firmly convinced, however, from my own experience and from the testimony of other men, that Latin is poorly taught in the majority of our Southern high schools and preparatory schools. No one who has had charge of Freshman classes needs argument from a fellow-sufferer to prove that this is true. The notes in this volume are, there fore, quite full. The introduction has'been made very brief, because of the well-nigh universal habit among students of skipping that portion of a textbook altogether. Subjects usually treated at length in introductions are here set forth at proper points in the commentary. In their edition of Cicero's works the letters of Cicero to his friends, and to his brother Quintus, occupy the ninth volume (Leipsic 1866); and those to Atticus and Brutus the tenth volume (1867). There are some passages in these selected letters which Baiter and Kayser, and all critical editors, are obliged to print in a hopelessly corrupt state. But inasmuch as the present edition is intended for the use of school, it seemed desirable to adopt in most cases such conjectural emendations as might enable the passage to bear translation. Beside these graver departures from the text of Baiter, some deviations in spelling have been adopted. The brackets and italics are form Baiter and Kayser, and denote respectively that the words so treated ought probably to be omitted, or inserted. The letters of Cicero appear to have been widely known down to the latest times of the Western Empire, but to have wholly fallen out of knowledge before the middle of the twelfth century. Their rediscovery was reserved for a man who merited such fortune, one of the foremost of the revivers of literature. Of the first two wives we know hfe' nothing, but the third, Calpurnia, is charmingly described in iv. 19, a letter written soon after the marriage, to his wife's maiden aunt, Hispulla, who, had had the charge of her upbringing. Calpurnia was the daughter of an influential citizen of Comum, and must have been very young at the time of her marriage, though Pliny himself was well advanced in middle life. Their happiness, however, was complete, in Spite of disappointed hopes of children. Calpurnia accompanied her husband to his province, and presumably survived him. Pliny writes throughout from the point of view of the rich man. He was born to wealth on both sides tis family. His father and mother both had estates near the lake of Como, and his adoption as his uncle's heir in a.d. 79 brought him further accessions.
