This document describes 13 selected examples of important supersonic flight research conducted from the Mojave Desert location of the Dryden Flight Research Center over a 4 decade period beginning in 1946. The research described herein was either obtained at supersonic speeds or enabled subsequent aircraft to penetrate or traverse the supersonic region. In some instances there accrued from these research efforts benefits which are also applicable at lower or higher speed regions. A major consideration in the selection of the various research topics was the lasting impact they have had, or will have, on subsequent supersonic flight vehicle design, efficiency, safety, and performance or upon improved supersonic research techniques. Rather, it represents a selective overview in which projects illustrative of an era, of pivotal technologies, or of advances in the art of flight research itself receive most of the coverage. Its overall intent is to emphasize some of the major themes, events, and accomplishments in this sometimes misunderstood field of aeronautics, to provide historical perspective about the development of the discipline, and to demonstrate the ways in which it contributed not just to the design and improvement of aircraft, but to that of spacecraft as well. Despite the unquestioned necessity of human hands and minds to guide research aircraft, in this volume the historic definition of flight research does not center on the role and actions of pilots. During the more than 80 years of the NACA and NASA flight research, aviators enjoyed a crucial, but not necessarily a marquee position in the pursuit of aeronautical knowledge. Rarely did the "kick the tires, light the fires" mentality prevail. Regardless of the images propagated by newspapers, by magazines, and even by celebrated books like The Right Stuff, caution and restraint characterized the behavior even of those flying such high performance, high profile aircraft as the X-15. Since every research result could not be detailed here, only the most critical technology issues and research findings are presented.NASA and its predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), have participated since 1920 in efforts to develop the technology required for supersonic cruise flight. Preliminary work concentrated on developing rudimentary test facilities and methods that would permit the investigation of supersonic problems. This was accompanied by research for defining aircraft and propulsion concepts for flight at speeds greater than the speed of sound. These early investigations contributed to the development of the joint U.S. Air Force/Navy/Bell XS-1 airplane that was piloted on the first successful supersonic flight by Air Force Capt. Charles E. "Chuck" Yeager in 1947. Between 1956 and 1971, a strong research effort supported the USAF supersonic B-70 and commercial supersonic transport concepts. After neither of these programs resulted in a production aircraft because of technical and political problems, NASA was given the responsibility of establishing the technology base for a viable supersonic cruise airplane. This latter effort, known as the NASA Supersonic Cruise Research (SCR) program, was conducted from 1971 to 1981.
