Book Synopsis The Language of Judaism by : Simon Glustrom
Download or read book The Language of Judaism written by Simon Glustrom and published by Jason Aronson, Incorporated. This book was released on 2000-08-01 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jews have long employed a rich, intricate, image-filled Hebrew vocabulary to express both their deepest beliefs and the specific details of their daily religious lives. The Language of Judaism is a lively and unique exposition of that vocabulary's most central terms and concepts. Responding to the news of today's non-Hebrew speakers, Rabbi Glustrom provides the terms in Hebrew, notes their English transliterations, and supplies the closest translations available. He then discusses the deeper meaning and significance of the terms, examining how they relate to various aspects of Jewish life. The Language of Judaism is exciting and unique for a variety of reasons. Certain it reveals the meaning of many terms and concepts that are vital to an understanding of Judaism. But more important, Rabbi Glustrom's vast knowledge of the material allows him to present each term in the precise context required to allow even beginners to understand it fully. Concepts from Mitzvah to Midrash, Teshuvah to Tanakh, Kol Nidre to Kibbutz come alive as Rabbi Glustrom explains their origins, histories, and derivations. The Language of Judaism is, on one level, a dictionary of terms. On another level, it is a complete exposition of the context and significance of those terms. But, when read at its highest level, The Language of Judaism is an examination and discussion of Jewish life itself.
Book Synopsis The Founding Myths of Israel by : Zeev Sternhell
Download or read book The Founding Myths of Israel written by Zeev Sternhell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-07 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The well-known historian and political scientist Zeev Sternhell here advances a radically new interpretation of the founding of modern Israel. The founders claimed that they intended to create both a landed state for the Jewish people and a socialist society. However, according to Sternhell, socialism served the leaders of the influential labor movement more as a rhetorical resource for the legitimation of the national project of establishing a Jewish state than as a blueprint for a just society. In this thought-provoking book, Sternhell demonstrates how socialist principles were consistently subverted in practice by the nationalist goals to which socialist Zionism was committed. Sternhell explains how the avowedly socialist leaders of the dominant labor party, Mapai, especially David Ben Gurion and Berl Katznelson, never really believed in the prospects of realizing the "dream" of a new society, even though many of their working-class supporters were self-identified socialists. The founders of the state understood, from the very beginning, that not only socialism but also other universalistic ideologies like liberalism, were incompatible with cultural, historical, and territorial nationalism. Because nationalism took precedence over universal values, argues Sternhell, Israel has not evolved a constitution or a Bill of Rights, has not moved to separate state and religion, has failed to develop a liberal concept of citizenship, and, until the Oslo accords of 1993, did not recognize the rights of the Palestinians to independence. This is a controversial and timely book, which not only provides useful historical background to Israel's ongoing struggle to mobilize its citizenry to support a shared vision of nationhood, but also raises a question of general significance: is a national movement whose aim is a political and cultural revolution capable of coexisting with the universal values of secularism, individualism, and social justice? This bold critical reevaluation will unsettle long-standing myths as it contributes to a fresh new historiography of Zionism and Israel. At the same time, while it examines the past, The Founding Myths of Israel reflects profoundly on the future of the Jewish State.
Book Synopsis "Not by Might, Nor by Power" by : Moshe Menuhin
Download or read book "Not by Might, Nor by Power" written by Moshe Menuhin and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a new introduction by Adi Ophir: An early and fierce critique of Zionism from a Jewish child of Palestine who argued against nationalism and injustice. Born in 1893, Moshe Menuhin was part of the inaugural class to attend the first Zionist high school in Palestine, the Herzliya gymnasium in Tel Aviv. He had grown up in a Hasidic home, but eventually rejected orthodoxy while remaining dedicated to Judaism. As a witness to the evolution of Israel, Menuhin grew disaffected with what he saw as a betrayal of the Jews’ spiritual principles. This memoir, written in 1965, is considered the first revisionist history of Zionism. A groundbreaking document, it discusses the treatment of the Palestinians, the effects of the Holocaust, the exploitation of the Mizrahi Jewish immigrants, and the use of propaganda to win over public opinion in America and among American Jews. In a postscript added after the Six-Day War, Menuhin also addresses the question of occupation. This new edition is updated with an introduction by Israeli philosopher Adi Ophir, putting Menuhin’s work into a contemporary historical context. Passionate and sometimes inflammatory in its prose, and met with controversy and anger upon its original publication under the title The Decadence of Judaism in Our Time, Menuhin’s polemic remains both a thought-provoking reassessment of Zionist history and a fascinating look at one observer’s experience of this embattled corner of the world over the course of several tumultuous decades.
