During 90 years of construction, the model that gives the characteristic layout to the district was perfected. As a result of this process, the Eixample district is the most representative one of the city of Barcelona. The district of the Eixample is a densely populated area where nearly 70% of its buildings have a structural system that consists of unreinforced masonry bearing walls, a system that have been demonstrated to be structurally vulnerable in case of seismic hazard. In this study, a seismic analysis is performed on a building that represents well the typology found in the district. The selected building corresponds to the ones located at the sides of the square blocks that conform the district. The N2 capacity spectrum method (Fajfar, 2000) recommended by the European Normative Eurocode 8 is used in this study to evaluate the seismic vulnerability of the typical unreinforced masonry buildings of the Eixample district. In this project the pushover or capacity curve is determined by 3Muri, a software working under the FME method (Frame by Macro Elements) which have been developed by the University of Genoa. The seismic hazard is characterized by the demand spectra formulated by the Eurocode 8, the Spanish normative NCSE--‐02 and by demand spectra developed for the city of Barcelona by Irizarry (2004) using probabilistic and deterministic approaches. The results of the analysis indicate that the damage scenarios differ substantially when applying the mentioned demand spectres. The Spanish norm, as well as the Eurocode 8 demand spectra, have been demonstrated to be less demanding than both probabilistic and deterministic approaches developed by Irizarry. The study highlights the non--‐negligible seismic risk of the masonry buildings.

During 90 years of construction, the repeatable model that gives the characteristic homogeneity to the district was improved and perfected. As a result of this process, the Eixample district is today, without any doubts, the most representative of the central part of the city of Barcelona. The district of the Eixample has the second highest population density in Spain and nearly 70% of its buildings have a structural system that consists of unreinforced masonry bearing walls. During post-earthquake surveys performed on different historic European towns with this typology of buildings, collapse mechanisms that involve only localized portions of the building and not the entire structure have been identified. In this study, a seismic analysis of local collapse mechanisms is performed on a building that represents well the typology found in the district. The selected building corresponds to the "band" building plan configuration, located at the sides of the square blocks that conform the district. The capacity spectrum method for local collapse mechanisms proposed by the Italian Normative DM-14-01-08 is used in this study to evaluate the seismic vulnerability of the typical unreinforced masonry buildings of the Eixample district. In this methodology the capacity curve is determined based on the equilibrium limit analysis, in particular the kinematic approach (Heyman, 1966). The seismic hazard is characterized by the demand spectra formulated by the Eurocode 8, the Spanish normative NCSE-02, and by demand spectra developed for the city of Barcelona by Irizarry (2004) using probabilistic and deterministic approaches. As part of the study a strengthening intervention is proposed. The results of the analysis indicate that the safety of out-of-plane mechanisms is not verified when the NCSE-02 types III and IV, and the Probabilistic Zone I spectra are considered. In several cases, the instability of the floor framing system due to the loss of support of the beams on the bearing walls controls the safety verification. Conversely, the in-plane mechanisms are safe for the seismic scenarios considered. The results of a parametric study reveal that the actual support length of the beams on the walls has a significant impact on the safety verification of the mechanisms, especially when frictional restrain forces are considered. The proposed intervention using steel ties effectively restrains the development of out-of-plane mechanisms and ensures the stability of the floor framing system. The study highlights the considerable seismic risk of the masonry buildings of the Eixample district.

Book excerpt: The historic Eixample district of Barcelona is characterised by its beautiful avenues, laid out in grid across the city. At first impression, the buildings lining these avenues appear identical, an unending façade built to house the new Barcelona of the 20th Century. The unreinforced masonry buildings that typify the development remain in use today, largely unaltered since their construction. Unreinforced masonry buildings are among the most vulnerable structures to damage from seismic actions. For the masonry buildings of the Eixample that house over 15% of the population of Barcelona, this is no exception. This study performs a seismic analysis on a typical masonry building of the Eixample to estimate and assess this damage. By doing so, it aims to estimate the likely damage due to seismic actions, to identify critical elements of the structures and to quantify the need for seismic risk maintenance and response plans. The analysis uses the N2 Capacity Spectrum Method (Fajfar, 2000), adopted by Eurocode 8, to determine the displacement demand of possible earthquake scenarios. A seismic hazard analysis determines the seismic demand using deterministic, probabilistic and current European and Spanish code provisions. The seismic demand is then compared to the results of a non-linear pushover analysis completed using software DIANA (Version 9.4). The model geometry was based upon plans of a building that well represents the typical unreinforced masonry buildings of the Eixample. Results indicate a displacement demand to Spanish code provisions that corresponds to a substantial level of damage, in accordance with the European Macroseismic Scale (EMS 98) damage criteria. A moderate level of damage is derived from the probabilistic seismic scenario. Similar to previous studies, these results indicate a significant risk of seismic damage. The analysis has isolated critical structural elements that control the global response and damage during seismic action. This information can be used to develop inspection and maintenance plans to limit the risk of seismic damage. This study highlights the real risk of seismic damage to the typical unreinforced masonry buildings of the Eixample district. It determines appropriate building maintenance procedures, and reinforces the need for seismic response planning to best manage the significant expected social and infrastructure demands should such a disastrous event ever occur.

Book excerpt: Research studies on the preparation for and mitigation of future earthquakes, an area of increasing importance to many countries around the world, comprise this volume. The selected papers included in this book have been prepared by experts from around the world in the fields of earthquake engineering relevant to the design of structures. As the world’s population has concentrated in urban areas resulting in buildings in regions of high seismic vulnerability, we have seen the consequences of natural disasters take an ever higher toll on human existence. Protecting the built environment in earthquake-prone regions involves not only the optimal design and construction of new facilities, but also the upgrading and rehabilitation of existing structures including heritage buildings, which is an important area of research. Major earthquakes and associated effects, such as tsunamis, continue to stress the need to carry out more research and a better understanding of these phenomena is required to design earthquake resistant buildings and to carry out risk assessment and vulnerability studies.

Book excerpt: This book offers a variety of analyses, methodologies, and reflections on the behaviour of vernacular architecture in the face of natural hazards, with an emphasis on the strategies that can be used to cope with them. The different examples of vernacular architecture studied in this book highlight the cultural wealth of this type of heritage, which has not only adapted to locally available resources and the needs of individual populations but has also successfully responded to the natural risks it encountered. As regards the types of risks analysed, the chapters focus on the impact of natural events on this type of heritage, proposing different methodologies for the analysis of vulnerability and any possible damage caused. In general, the contributions included offer an interesting analysis of the behaviour of vernacular architecture in the face of natural hazards and the different scales or approaches that can be employed to cope with them. This book will be of particular interest to specialists and those interested in the fields of architecture, history, structures and risk management. It was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Architectural Heritage.

Book excerpt: This book covers the seismic vulnerability assessment of unreinforced brick masonry (URBM) buildings. A method for seismic vulnerability assessment, based on the experimental results of series of URBM walls, is developed. The method produced satisfactory results when compared with the results of full-scale URBM buildings tested at various laboratories. The proposed method, although developed for URBM buildings, can also be applied to other types of masonry if the properties required to quantify the seismic performance are experimentally determined. The proposed method is used to assess the seismic risk of URBM building stock of Northern Pakistan as a case study. Fragility curves for buildings stock are drawn to determine the probabilities of occurrence of various performance levels at various levels of ground shaking. It is found that the probability of occurrence of damages corresponding to various performance levels of single- and double- story buildings do not differ significantly. It is also concluded that unreinforced brick masonry, if properly constructed, can be safely used in localities placed in seismic zone 2b as recommended by uniform Building code (UBC-97) and below
