Book excerpt: Abstract: Existing concrete buildings lacking seismic details are well known to cause most losses during earthquakes so there is no wonder they are nicknamed killer buildings. In every new earthquake we see more evidence of their vulnerability. Ordinary building are taking the most focus of researchers from all over the world because of the majority of building are reinforced concrete. But one of the most widely used structure system contains steel reinforced concrete (SRC) composite columns. This type has been used since early of 1950 and nowadays most high rise or non-prismatic buildings are built using SRC composite columns. This Experimental study presented addresses the seismic performance of (SRC) composite columns experiencing shear and flexural failures using different concrete grades and confinement details to mimic both existing buildings with old construction details and modern buildings designed and built according to modern codes and construction practices. Test specimens represent exterior columns modeled based on a typical seismic design of a 30-story prototype new core wall-frame tall building and a 20-story prototype gravity existing building. Test parameters considered in this study are target failure mode, axial load ratio, percentage of longitudinal steel, structural steel section, concrete grade, and the transverse reinforcement volumetric ratio. Tests aim to characterize and compare the cyclic response of SRC columns with old and modern construction details. In particular, shear capacity, flexural capacity, residual axial capacity, deformation capacity and engineering demand parameters under different test variables are sought. Backbone curves for numerical simulation of seismic performance of SRC columns are presented. There are fourteen tested specimens divided to three groups; four specimens were tested as pilot, three specimens were tested representing modern building flexure deficient column and seven specimens for old building: five shear deficient specimens and two flexure deficient specimens. This work came out with many conclusions and recommendations for old and modern buildings to overcome the deficiency of SRC composite column. Retrofitting shear deficient SRC columns under high axial loads (>40%) and flexure deficient columns under high axial loads (higher than the balanced load, i.e. compression controlled failure) experiencing moderate to strong ground shaking seems inevitable.

Eight two-thirds scale specimens were tested, each consisting of a structural steel shape encased in reinforcedconcrete. Parameters studied in the test program included: the degree of concrete confinement required to achieve adequate ductility; the effectiveness of shear studs for developing flexural stiffness and capacity under combined loading; the distribution of transverse shear resistance among the elements of the composite column; and concrete compressive strength. The results of the test program indicate that composite columns possess exceptional ductility and strength under cyclic loading if the buckling of longitudinal reinforcement is inhibited. Furthermore, the steel shape provides the primary resistance to transverse shear during overloading, and shear studs are not effective in enhancing the resistance against lateral loading. The elastic secant stiffness of the composite section corresponding to initial yielding of the longitudinal reinforcement was found to be well approximated by using one-half the gross moment of inertia (0.5I[subscript g]) in conjunction with Young's modulus for concrete. A prediction method based on superimposing the individual strengths of the reinforced concrete and structural steel shape was found to provide good agreement with test results. Current AISC LRFD provisions were determined to grossly underestimate the flexural capacity of the test specimens, which were axially loaded to 20% of their nominal pure axial load capacity [sic]."

However, there is a lack of knowledge in the literature on the behavior of SRC composite columns and a small number of tests available to derive seismic backbone curves for macro-modeling or retrofitting purposes. This research demonstrates that the ASCE 41-17 criteria underestimates the structural capacity of the system, via comparing the vulnerability curves obtained following the ASCE 41-17 requirements with the ones derived from the test results of six specimens of SRC columns tested in The American University in Cairo. First, the force-displacement curves for the specimens are developed, then, the design and non-linear characteristics of the two models are presented, and finally, the vulnerability curves are developed. The results show that the ASCE 41-17 criteria underestimates the capacity of the system.

Book excerpt: The estimation of deformation indices and strength capacities of reinforced concrete structural members is neither a simple nor a systematic unique approach. Several analytical models for such estimations have evolved over the years (Park and Paulay (1975), Lehman et al. (1998), Panagiotakos and Fardis (2001), FEMA 273 (1997), Priestley et al. (1996)) and some are an essential part of todays Seismic Codes of Assessment in the form of acceptance criteria (e.g. EC8-III 2020, ASCE/SEI 41-17). However, significant dispersion still exists between experimental data and code-based analytical estimates, especially when assessing structures built prior to the consolidation of capacity-design provisions in international codes (before the 1980s). These structures -referred to as nonconforming - consist primarily of structural members that possess deficiencies in the quality of concrete and steel, and in the transverse and/or longitudinal reinforcement detailing. Deficiencies in longitudinal detailing consists of presence of lap splice at the base of the column or inadequate development lengths, and sparse and poorly anchored transverse reinforcement. In the present work a comparative study was conducted using advanced nonlinear finite element simulations (using software ATENA, https://www.cervenka.cz/) for a benchmark set of columns modelling older detailing practices. Pushover analyses were conducted on the column models in order to determine the parametric sensitivity of the deformation indices, failure mode and associated strength of these benchmark cases to their basic design properties (such as longitudinal and transverse reinforcement ratios and arrangement, axial load ratio and anchorage/lap-splice geometries). It was found that deformation capacities of columns deteriorate significantly in the presence of lap splice or insufficient anchorage length in critical regions.Stirrup yielding and shear failure are suppressed in the case of adequate confinement and may only appear with higher axial compression. Yield penetration and pull out failure dominates the failure mechanism at low axial loads limiting the deformation capacity significantly in the absence of good confinement. The analytical results are calibrated against The design expressions used in the assessment codes illustrating the limits of the applicability and the discord between the different approaches used by current codes to define the so-called acceptance criteria in the seismic assessment practice. The simulation results are also used to vet the various assumptions that underlie the simple mechanistic models used in deriving seismic design expressions for yield and the ultimate deformation capacities, shear strength, and the rate of its degradation with increasing ductility.

The proposed technology combines a precast post-tensioned composite steel-concrete hollow-core column with supplemental energy dissipation, in a way to reduce on-site construction burdens and minimize earthquake-induced residual deformations, damage, and associated repair costs. The column consists of two steel cylindrical shells, with high-performance concrete cast in between. Both shells act as permanent formwork; the outer shell substitutes the longitudinal and transverse reinforcement, as it works in composite action with the concrete, whereas the inner shell removes unnecessary concrete volume from the column, prevents concrete implosion, and prevents buckling of energy dissipating dowels when embedded in the concrete. Large inelastic rotations can be accommodated at the end joints with minimal structural damage, since gaps are allowed to open at these locations and to close upon load reversal. Longitudinal post-tensioned high-strength steel threaded bars, designed to respond elastically, in combination with gravity forces ensure self-centering behavior. Internal or external steel devices provide energy dissipation by axial yielding. This dissertation reviews the main principles and requirements for the design of these columns. The experimental findings from two quasi-static reversed cyclic tests are then presented, and numerical simulations of the experimental response are proposed.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Prior studies have shown that older reinforced concrete buildings designed before the introduction of the modern seismic code in the early 1970s are vulnerable to damage and collapse during an earthquake. In particular, building columns did not have the lateral strength or ductility to withstand the demands imposed by the effects of a severe earthquake ground motion, and were often the most critical components of such earthquake damage-prone structures. They were typically characterized by insufficient and poorly detailed transverse reinforcement, widely spaced stirrups and low longitudinal reinforcement ratios. The focus of this research is to develop a suitable hysteretic model that would predict the lateral deformation behavior of lightly reinforced or shear-critical columns subjected to seismic and gravity loads. Tests of reinforced concrete columns under lateral loads have shown that the total drift stems from deformations owing to flexure, reinforcement slip, and shear. The monotonic response is initially established for the separate components in order to serve as a primary backbone curve for the cyclic force-displacement relationships. Existing analytical and experimental research on lightly reinforced columns is examined. This information is used, and when required, modified to ultimately develop a suitable overall hysteretic model that would accurately predict the lateral response of this class of columns with a limited computational effort. Cyclic models are developed for each deformation component that incorporate the strength, stiffness, and energy dissipation characteristics of the structural members. The total hysteretic response was derived by coupling flexure, reinforcement slip, and shear responses as springs in series. The behavior of a column is classified into one of five categories based on a comparison of the shear, yield, and flexural strengths. The expected behavior in each category determines rules that govern the combination of the deformation components. The proposed hysteretic model is calibrated against experimental results for correlation and verification studies. Overall, the model did a reasonable job of simulating the loaddeformation relationships of shear-critical columns. It provides a suitable platform to analyze older reinforced concrete buildings with a view to determining the amount of remediation necessary for satisfactory seismic performance.
