Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are the proceedings of a meeting celebrating Michael Thompson's seminal work on solar and stellar physics, as well as his major contributions to the development of the National Center for Atmospheric Research. The meeting also marked Michael J. Thompson’s untimely death in October 2018. Michael played a key role in the development of helioseismology and its application to the study of the structure and dynamics of the solar interior, and he provided a strong foundation for the extension of seismic studies for other stars. After focusing for several years on more administrative activities, he was returning to leading the seismic studies of solar interior rotation and he was deeply involved in the understanding of the dynamics of the core of stars, when his life was tragically lost. The conference focused on dynamical aspects of the sun and stars, based on the large amount of data available on solar and stellar oscillations, and the extensive and detailed modelling now becoming feasible. Combining observations, seismic analysis, and modelling the meeting and this book serve as a fitting memorial to a close colleague and friend, much missed.
Book Synopsis The Sun as a Variable Star: Solar and Stellar Irradiance Variations by : Judit M. Pap

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The IAU Colloquium No. 143 "The Sun as a Variable Star: Solar and Stellar Irradiance Variations" was held on June 20 - 25, 1993 at the Clarion Harvest House, Boulder, Colorado, USA. The main objective of this Colloquium was to review the most recent results on the observations, theoretical interpreta tions, and empirical and physical models of the variations observed in solar and stellar irradiances. A special emphasis of the Colloquium was to discuss the results gained on the climatic impact of solar irradiance variability. The study of changes in solar and stellar irradiances has been of high interest for a long time. Determining the absolute value of the luminosity of stars with different ages is a crucial question for the theory of stellar evolu tion and energy production of stellar interiors. Observations of the temporal changes of solar and stellar irradiances - in the entire spectral band and at different wavelengths - provide an additional tool for studying the physical processes below the photosphere and in the solar- stellar atmospheres. Since the Sun's radiative output is the main driver of the physical processes with in the Earth's atmosphere, the study of irradiance changes is an extremely important issue for climatic studies as well. Climatic models show that small, but persistent changes in solar irradiance may influence the Earth's climate.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 838 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulsating and eccentric binary stars play a fundamentally important role in deciphering the mass distribution within stars. The present volume reviews the fundamental concepts of both radial and nonradial oscillations in the stars, including the Sun. Helio- and astroseismological results are reviewed, from the basics to the most recent developments. A new theory is presented, which seems to explain the mechanism of the light and radial velocity variations of recently discovered Ap stars. This textbook covers almost all kinds of variable stars of widely different characteristics. It will serve as a reference text for a very long time to come, not only for specialists but also for undergraduate students of physics and astronomy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the stars is the bedrock of modern astrophysics. Stars are the source of life. The chemical enrichment of our Milky Way and of the Universe withallelementsheavierthanlithiumoriginatesintheinteriorsofstars.Stars arethe tracersofthe dynamics ofthe Universe, gravitationallyimplying much more than meets the eye. Stars ionize the interstellar medium and re-ionized the early intergalactic medium. Understanding stellar structure and evolution is fundamental. While stellar structure and evolution are understood in general terms, we lack important physical ingredients, despite extensive research during recent decades.Classicalspectroscopy, photometry, astrometryandinterferometryof stars have traditionally been used as observational constraints to deduce the internal stellar physics. Unfortunately, these types of observations only allow the tuning of the basic common physics laws under stellar conditions with relatively poor precision. The situation is even more worrisome for unknown aspects of the physics and dynamics in stars. These are usually dealt with by using parameterised descriptions of, e.g., the treatments of convection, rotation, angularmomentumtransport, theequationofstate, atomicdi?usion andsettlingofelements,magneto-hydrodynamicalprocesses,andmore.There is a dearth of observational constraints on these processes, thus solar values areoftenassignedtothem.Yetitishardtoimaginethatonesetofparameters is appropriate for the vast range of stars.
Download or read book Asteroseismology written by Pere L. Pallé and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of stars has grown significantly due to recent advances in asteroseismology, the stellar analog of helioseismology, the study of the Sun's acoustic wave oscillations. Using ground-based and satellite observatories to measure the frequency spectra of starlight, researchers are able to probe beneath a star's surface and map its interior structure. This volume provides a wide-ranging and up-to-date overview of the theoretical, experimental and analytical tools for carrying out front-line research in stellar physics using asteroseismological observations, tools and inferences. Chapters from seven eminent scientists in residence at the twenty-second Canary Islands Winter School of Astrophysics examine the interior of our Sun relative to data collected from distant stars, how to measure the fundamental parameters of single field stars, diffusion processes, and the effects of rotation on stellar structures. The volume also provides detailed treatments of modeling and computing programs, providing astronomers and graduate students a practical, methods-based guide.
Book Synopsis Differential Rotation in Sun-like Stars from Surface Variability and Asteroseismology by : Martin Bo Nielsen
Download or read book Differential Rotation in Sun-like Stars from Surface Variability and Asteroseismology written by Martin Bo Nielsen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his PhD dissertation Martin Bo Nielsen performs observational studies of rotation in stars like the Sun. The interior rotation in stars is thought to be one of the driving mechanisms of stellar magnetic activity, but until now this mechanism was unconstrained by observational data. NASA’s Kepler space mission provides high-precision observations of Sun-like stars which allow rotation to be inferred using two independent methods: asteroseismology measures the rotation of the stellar interior, while the brightness variability caused by features on the stellar surface trace the rotation of its outermost layers. By combining these two techniques Martin Bo Nielsen was able to place upper limits on the variation of rotation with depth in five Sun-like stars. These results suggest that the interior of other Sun-like stars also rotate in much the same way as our own Sun.

Book Synopsis The Sun: A Laboratory for Astrophysics by : J.T. Schmelz
Download or read book The Sun: A Laboratory for Astrophysics written by J.T. Schmelz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As in the days following Skylab, solar physics came to the end of an era when the So lar Maximum Mission re-entered the earth's atmosphere in December 1989. The 1980s had been a pioneering decade not only in space- and ground-based studies of the solar atmosphere (Solar Maximum Mission, Hinotori, VLA, Big Bear, Nanc;ay, etc.) but also in solar-terrestrial relations (ISEE, AMPTE), and solar interior neutrino and helioseismol ogy studies. The pace of development in related areas of theory (nuclear, atomic, MHD, beam-plasma) has been equally impressive. All of these raised tantalizing further questions about the structure and dynamics of the Sun as the prototypical and best observed star. This Advanced Study Institute was timed at a pivotal point between that decade and the realisation of Yohkoh, Ulysses, SOHO, GRANAT, Coronas, and new ground-based optical facilities such as LEST and GONG, so as to teach and inspire the up and coming young solar researchers of the 1990s. The topics, lecturers, and students were all chosen with this goal in mind, and the result seems to have been highly successful by all reports.
Book Synopsis Seismology of the Sun and the Distant Stars by : D.O. Gough
Download or read book Seismology of the Sun and the Distant Stars written by D.O. Gough and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of modern helioseismology is only ten years old. In 1975 F-L Deubner separated for the first time the spatial and temporal pro perties of the solar five-minute oscillations, and was thus able to measure the dispersion relation for high-degree acoustic modes (p modes). The diagnostic value of these observations was appreciated immediately. Indeed, by comparing the observed relation with computations that had already been carried out by R.K. Ulrich, and subsequently by H. Ando and Y. Osaki, it was recognised that contemporary solar models that had been constructed with the low observed neutrino flux in mind were too hot in their outer layers. Moreover, their convection zones were too shallow. Since that time the observations have improved. There is now good reason to suppose that a sufficiently careful analysis will lead to a direct determination of the helium abundance in the solar convection zone, especially when foreseeable further improvements in the observations have been achieved. The data will also provide useful diagnostics of the uncertain equation of state of partially ionized plasmas, and they might also enable us to measure the large-scale structure of the convec tive flow.
Book Synopsis The Sun’s Surface and Subsurface by : Jean-Pierre Rozelot
Download or read book The Sun’s Surface and Subsurface written by Jean-Pierre Rozelot and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-01-11 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composed of a set of lectures and tutorial reviews, this book stems from a summer school devoted to the gravitational aspects of the sun and their geophysical consequences. Contribitions elaborate on the gravitational distortions of the sun which can be used to gain some knowledge of the sun's interior and surface phenomena but which also influences the sun's irradience and thus ultimately the earth's climate. Last but not least, it is shown that these small distortions constitute a formidable challenge to solar astrometry, and the final part of the book describes the observational difficulties in defining unequivocally the solar diameter.
