Book excerpt: Concrete Filled Steel Tube (CFST) columns have several advantages over reinforced concrete columns in that: (1) the steel tube provides confinement of the concrete and reduces damage to the concrete core, (2) they possess very high shear capacities, (3) the steel tube is placed at the optimum location for flexural resistance, and (4) they sustain large drift demands without damage. CFSTs also accelerate construction since: (1) the steel tube acts as permanent formwork, (2) in a slab-column system, the columns and slabs may be cast simultaneously, (3) most of the internal reinforcement can be eliminated. Previously an experimental program was undertaken to investigate a proposed connection for use in flat-plate construction. The connection consists of steel rings on either side of the column with post-tensioned bolts to connect the rings and provide active confinement to the slab. The forces are transferred from the upper column to the lower column through reinforcement welded to the inside of the tube of the lower column. The ring also increases the critical perimeter for shear. A four-specimen program investigated the impact of the following design variables: (1) ring size, (2) number of bolts within the ring flange, and (3) bolts outside of the ring. A reference specimen using conventional stud-rail detailing was built. This experimental program aimed to further that research by investigating the effect of slab depth on the connection. In addition, two full-scale push-through tests were conducted to better understand the two-way shear behavior of the proposed connection. The conventional stud-rail connection sustained damage at low drift levels, which resulted in loss of strength. This behavior compromises the integrity and resilience of flat-plate buildings. The new connection provides drift capacities of 4% or greater before strength loss and mitigates damage, meeting the structural objective of integrity and resilience after a large seismic event. The research suggests that the ring dimension depends on both the column size and thickness of the slab. Test results showed better behavior with two rows of bolts on the ring flange. Although bolts outside the ring are beneficial, this detail was deemed impractical for new construction but may be viable for increasing shear capacity in retrofit design. Two-way shear strength resulted in a higher capacity for the connection with the larger ring flange and that ACI predictions of capacity were conservative.

Book excerpt: Old reinforced concrete buildings are vulnerable to seismic actions as they were built in accordance with non-seismic code provisions and suffer from poor material quality and/or reinforcement detailing. Moreover, many buildings were constructed without even basic design code recommendations. Consequently, their structural components, in particular beam-column joints, suffer from a wide range of deficiencies. These joints may deteriorate severely under seismic actions leading to extensive damage and collapse. The current study aims to develop an understanding of the behaviour of exterior beam-column joints with shear strength and anchorage deficiencies, and to examine a strengthening solution using post-tensioned metal strips in upgrading their performance. A multiphase experimental programme was conducted including small and medium-scale beams with inadequate lap splices loaded in tension and deficient isolated full-scale exterior beam-column joints subjected to quasi-static cyclic loading. In the beam tests, deficient splices were investigated under different confinement conditions, namely, unconfined, internally confined by steel stirrups, and externally confined by metal strips. Test parameters included concrete cover, confinement ratios, concrete quality, and bar diameter. Providing post-tensioned external confinement had a considerable impact on the behaviour, and resulted in sizable enhancements in strength and ductility. Parametric studies were conducted to identify the parameters most influencing the contribution of external confinement to bond. A bond stress-slip model is proposed that can be used to predict and simulate the behaviour of splices strengthened by post-tensioned metal strips. This model was implemented in FE models of beams and showed good correlation with the measured response. In the joint tests, four full scale exterior RC beam-column joints were tested under cyclic loading. The joints experienced severe cracking and damage including a shear mechanism in the panel zone. The joints failed prematurely at about 50% of their nominal flexural strength. Strengthening the joints with post-tensioned metal strips led to an improved performance, higher energy dissipation and more controlled shear failure along with moderate damage in the beam. An enhanced ACI-based strut-and-tie joint model is proposed and verified against the current test results and results by others. The model can be used for strengthened specimens as well as unconfined exterior joints and it accounts for different beam anchorage lengths. A quad-linear shear stress-strain model is proposed to simulate the behaviour of strengthened joints. The model was implemented in a finite element panel-zone scissors model. The scissors model was incorporated in nonlinear static and cyclic analyses. The simulated response was found to represent the joint behaviour reasonably well. A full-scale two storey reinforced concrete framed building was designed and tested on a shaking table, in cooperation with different researchers and academic partners. The building was substandard with a multiple range of deficiencies in the joint regions and connecting elements. The bare building suffered severe damage under small seismic intensities. Upgrading the structure with schemes of post-tensioned metal strips led to a considerably enhanced performance.

Book excerpt: In the early 20th century, steel frame buildings were built to different standards from those used in modern construction. Riveted, built-up members and connections were often used, with joints and members encased in concrete for fire protection. These early steel buildings were designed based upon observations of past building performance rather than through detailed calculations and predictions of structural behaviour. The walls were infill masonry or concrete, either unreinforced or very lightly reinforced and floors were typically cast in place reinforced concrete. The strength and stiffness of the semi-rigid connections and masonry infill as well as the effect of floor slabs integral with their supporting beams were not well documented and probably not well understood. Examples of these structures can be found throughout the cities and towns of New Zealand and many are quite prestigious, in full service and often enjoying heritage status. Developing methods of assessing their seismic strength and serviceability is a major objective of the research described herein. Assuming that their seismic strength is inadequate leads to the further objective of devising a retrofitting technique that will raise their strength to acceptable levels (without violating the heritage constraints). Seismic strength results from the resistance of the infill walls and steel frames, coupled together by the floor diaphragms. Assessment of the building strength was subdivided into two investigations, one focussing on the contribution of the walls (the subject of a separate PhD programme) and the present work which examines the contribution of the concrete encased steel frames. A search for candidate buildings due for demolition was undertaken in the hope of obtaining full scale, as-built beam, column and joint assemblies that could be removed and tested. When this was unsuccessful it was decided to adopt the archetypal, 1928, 9 storey Hope Gibbons building in downtown Wellington as a case study. It offered typical construction details, a near complete set of drawings and limited access to sample material properties. Three experimental tests were conducted on half scale replicas of typical internal and external beam-column joints (including secondary beam stubs, integral composite floor slab and concrete encasing) to determine moment-rotation characteristics, failure mode, effect of concrete slab, crack development and opportunities for retrofit methods to enhance seismic performance. It was found that although riveted beam to column connections were typically not designed to resist moments, they could develop a modest moment capacity, contributing to the moment-rotation response and the horizontal strength and stiffness of a frame. Despite the early failure of the bolted beam flange to column face connections a moment-resisting action developed with the beam bottom flange bearing against the column face and the beam top flange tension transferred into the floor slab. This overloaded the floor slab and its low reinforcement ratio but suggested a retrofit technique in which carbon fibre reinforced polymer strips (CFRP) were embedded in the floor slab surface using the near surface method (NSM) to increase the tension capacity. Further tests on half scale joint replicas were carried out to test the effectiveness of CFRP NSM retrofit showing that increases of moment strength of the order of 20% were readily obtainable at rotations of around .04 radians (depending on initial beam flange to column face gap). The experimental work was complemented by a comprehensive finite element (FE) analysis programme using Abaqus software. Half and full scale FE models were calibrated by the experimental data and the FE output in turn was used to construct simplified moment-rotation joint characteristics. Overall frame analysis was then undertaken using Ruaumoko software with the previously mentioned joint characteristics. This enabled seismic time-history and push-over analyses to be completed to assess the as-built and retrofitted strength and stiffness. It was found that the retrofitting increased the frame strength by about 5% and reduced drift by a similar percentage. However, the strength, even with retrofitting did not reach the benchmark of 0.3 of new structure strength.
